Am I over feeding?

DS is 2 and a half and loves his food. MIL is constantly commenting on how much he eats and how ‘good’ he is. He does have days where he rejects his lunch/tea for something else but is generally good. The constant comments such as ‘wow eating again’ and ‘having more?’ Are
starting to make me paranoid that I’m giving him too much.

A general day looks like this:

Breakfast: weetabix x2, shreddies, shredded wheat, porridge, cornflakes

Mid morning snack: banana, orange, cereal bar, half a slice of toast

Lunch: homemade soup & toast, pasta w veggies, omelette , scrambled eggs, fish fingers w waffle & veg, sandwich fruit & yoghurt

Afternoon snack: biscuit, carrot/cucumber sticks, something we baked in the morning

Dinner: whatever we’re having

Does this sound too much? He certainly looks healthy and is a very active boy. He eats until he’s full and we never push for more. My gut tells me it’s fine but I’m interested in other thoughts!

What is his weight and height like? Is he “in proportion”.

that amount sounds reasonable to me. My toddlers are like teenagers!

Why would 3 meals and 2 snacks be too much? Are the portions ridiculous? I think you are over thinking this

Mycatsasuperstar · 15/01/2026 13:16

So to be clear these are options he might have for breakfast and lunch as opposed to has every item listed in one sitting. Sorry might be the way I am reading it. If its options then mil should shut her mouth. Unless there's a good or medical reason technically kids will eat until they are full (unless its sweets etc and then its till they are sick! )and thats it.

mindutopia · 15/01/2026 13:20

If he eats all that in a day, yes! That’s more than Dh and I combined eat in a day.

Rainbowralph · 15/01/2026 13:22

I’m confused how much he is eating in a day. Some of those things or all of those things?? I would assume it’s just some of those things, otherwise your MIL has a point!

Coffeeishot · 15/01/2026 13:23

I thought he was having 5 breakfasts for a nano seconds 😂 his diet looks fine and he is eating some toddlers can be picky, his granny might just be looking for something to say to him my mum was a bit like that when mine were kids.

Zippidydoodah · 15/01/2026 13:24

It’s got to be a selection of all these things, in which case looks good to me!

ToKittyornottoKitty · 15/01/2026 13:24

Surely she’s given options for each meal and isn’t saying he eats all of that every day with no variety…

Sounds normal, unless you are giving huge portions.

Can you say to Grandma that you are trying to use neutral language around food?

You think a two year old child is eating 5 breakfasts, 6 lunches, 7 snacks plus whatever OP is cooking for their evening meal?

Birdh0use · 15/01/2026 13:30

Can always take him to the health visitor? Im not sure all toddlers need snacks but some certainly so.

This. Boys get EDs too.

bedtimestories · 15/01/2026 14:18

They grow a lot between the ages of 2 and 3. As long as he is tracking his centile I wouldn't be worried

TwinklyGoldReader · 15/01/2026 15:03

Thanks everyone! Just to confirm- I’m not offering a full buffet for each meal, they’re just examples 😂 I do feel reassured now!
