To think a phone call, not in person appt, is not good for chest infections?

I’ve had pneumonia. Been out of hospital a week. They told me to call my gp with any worsening symptoms, specifically:

  • fever
  • new chest discomfort
  • increased breathlessness

i have developed a fever overnight and gurgling in my chest which comes with pain.

I called the GP surgery and they’ve offered me a telephone appointment with a nurse.

aibu to think they need to listen to my chest/check my vital signs? I’m really scared and probably overreacting but this is painful

Chest pain - A+E

The nurse will send you to A&E so cut out the middle man/woman. A GP F2F appt would probably also result to in advice to go to A&E (or liaising with the medical team you were recently under)

This is a A&E job

Did you tell them you've been hospitalised with pneumonia? Phone appointment with a nurse is ridiculous.

JoyeuxNarwhal · 15/01/2026 10:21

Is it not a triage phone call? Then you will be called in for face to face/directed elsewhere? That's what happens at our surgery.

If you need hospital treatment I'd agree to the GP surgery appointment, they'll likely be able to get admitted to an assessment unit rather than you having to sit in A&E for hours. That's my experience anyway.

I'm guessing the nurse will say you've got to be seen. How annoying. I suspect you might well be back to A&E by the end of the day...

The answer to your question depends on the patient, here your symptoms and history are important.

I went to GP with chest infection - called ambulance as suspected pneumonia. Every appt after was a phone call but they called me in if they felt I needed to be seen. I think it is just a triage system as they only have so many F2F appts.
