to want time off work

Through events I can't go into as will be outing, I have no one to cover me at work, holidays, sickness, appointments. I did have someone who could cover, but no longer here. There is a plan to replace that person but at current it's not possible. We are one of several remote units and our HO is based in another part of the country some 6 hours away. No one from another site or HO can cover me as they can't commute and none will agree to stay.

I have not had any time off for 6 months and i'm losing the will to live.

I just don't know what to do.

What do you think will happen if you take a week off? I’d imagine either others will step in or you will come back to a shed load of emails.
There are lots of jobs where there is no cover when people are off sick or on leave.
No job is worth making yourself ill or burn out for. What would you say to a friend in your position? I am sure you’d tell them to take a break. Be a friend to yourself and have a holiday. Please.

So you're obviously not as stressed as you make out? If you were you'd be using your holidays

Don't be ridiculous.

In a trade off between competing stressors, it may well be that OP has decided that she can push through to a known end point and maximise her financial security post-redundancy rather than taking the leave a few weeks earlier and reducing the cushion she has to live on while finding another job.

I'm so sorry OP. Sounds like they've been stringing you along knowing this was coming.

Given the update about redundancy, get it in writing that you have a specific number of days holidays accrued and that you have been unable to take, and their express written agreement that these will be paid as part of the settlement at the end.

I'm not going to get much redundancy or PILON so I need to get as much money out of them as I can, obviously I will have plenty of time off when I finish, and believe me I am very very stressed

But the likelihood is that you won't get paid these holidays because you just didn't bother taking them... you will likely lose them. They won't allow you to accrue holidays you just didn't take.

You originally said they wouldn't allow holidays during the period til redundancy and now you are changing to you just want the money instead?

Also, you said in an earlier post pre redundancy that you would be looking for a new job anyway so I'm sure you won't be out of work indefinitely.

LaurieFairyCake · 13/02/2026 15:19

You have to make sure you’re going to get paid for every day of the holidays you haven’t taken/have cancelled.

Do that while you still have time to take them if they don’t pay you

So sorry this has happened to you Flowers

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 13/02/2026 15:45

you are entitled to holiday pay for the days they agreed you could carry over ( I hope that is in writing print it out if in email form so they can't delete it) if being made redudant at end of April you are entilted to 4/12 of this years holiday entitlement ( minimum would be 9.3 days) assuming it runs on calendar year.

you need to confirm in writing that if you don't take these days it will be added on to your final pay , if not; you need to take these days before end of April, do not work for free, also don't do overtime unless it is paid between now and then

LlynTegid · 13/02/2026 15:48

Whilst not the outcome you wanted, I hope having some certainty and being able to plan to some extent helps a small amount.

Carouseloflife · 13/02/2026 16:06

By cancelling your own leave and working when Ill you’re enabling your employer to ignore the issue. Take some time off sick and they’ll have to sort it out.
