On or off that is the question?

DH is 65 years old and I will be 62 next month.
DH thinks that the heating should be off today to save money and I think
that it should be on.
My view is that we're not going to live for ever, we are both here all day and should have the house warm.

AIBU or is he right that it should be off to save money???

If you’re cold, put it on.

Alicorn1707 · 13/01/2026 11:15

Are finances a consideration? Some things in life are worth the expense, if you can afford them. Heating and being comfortable in your own home, is definitely one.

If not, put it on, if it is, then an Oodie will keep you toasty @Sam9769 😉

5foot5 · 13/01/2026 11:15

Can you afford to keep it on? If so then do it.

DH and I are a similar age to you and retired so we are often in all day. At this time of year it often starts to feel cold after the heating has been off for a bit. If we are out and about then that's fine, but when we are in, if one of us is feeling the cold we whack it on.

Yes you can, and I do, stick on an extra jumper or whatever. But that's not always enough.

BIWI · 13/01/2026 11:16

It depends entirely on the temperature!

Yesterday, the temperature was in the low teens, so for much of the day the heating was off as we had enough retained heat from the night/day before. By late afternoon, when the temperature was dropping, the heating went back on.

Are you struggling for money @Sam9769 or is your DH just mean?!

MiserableMrsMopp · 13/01/2026 11:18

Off during the day. Layer up. On in the evening.

Yes there's no blanket rule!

What temperature is your house? It's better to rely on temperature because sometimes you feel cold just because you haven't moved much.

We have small thermometers in every room and only put the heating on once it's under 17. But we both like it quite cool.

Createausername1970 · 13/01/2026 11:21

Same issue in our house, but I won - with a bit of help from a builder friend who said it's cheaper in the long run to keep the house at a minimum reasonable temperature to avoid issues with damp etc.

It's now set to come on if it drops below 18 degrees. Sometimes I boost it to 20 for a short while if I am feeling particularly chilly.

But hoodies or jumpers are the first port of call as well.

DaisyChain505 · 13/01/2026 11:21

Is money money for you? I understand people who are living month to month and can’t make money stretch to cover even the basics being precious with heating but if that isn’t a worry of yours I can’t see why you wouldn’t be comfortable heat wise if you’re home for the day.

TheNightingalesStarling · 13/01/2026 11:21

Depends how warm the house is surely? Mine is currently 16, so I'm warm enough in an oodie style thing while working.

Last week it dropped to 13 in early afternoon, so heating went on early!

sundayvibeswig22 · 13/01/2026 11:23

When I wfh I only put the heating on occasionally. Heating was on for an hour at 6am and house is 19 degrees. I do usually wear fleecy pj bottoms and a warm top with socks. If you’re wearing warm ish clothes and still cold then I’d put it on.

MonsterasEverywhere · 13/01/2026 11:25

Without knowing the temperature, the weather, and if either of you have health conditions or mobility problems it's not really a question that random people on the internet can answer.

jamcorrosion · 13/01/2026 11:29

If I’m cold I put the heating on - I don’t worry about the cost of the bill. I’m not rich by any strength but I absolutely refuse to be cold and uncomfortable in my home

Livpool · 13/01/2026 11:36

If you can afford it, put it on. I wfh and put it on when I am cold. I have severe asthma, triggered by cold air so just putting on more clothes and blankets doesn’t help

lazyarse123 · 13/01/2026 11:50

We are retired so when we're in we put it on if we feel cold.
We do both have fleece blankets and i put my dressing gown on and dh has extra thick fleecy pyjama top thing.
We do live in a park home and gas bottles cost £75 and we use 2 a month in this weather and then 1 from about march. Last year we only needed one between April and September so i budget for one every month and save the excess for the colder months. I realise that's a lot easier than unexpected bills and so far we haven't had an increase in price.

Shedmistress · 13/01/2026 11:58

Our fire went on an hour ago.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 13/01/2026 12:01

Ours is always set to 22 degrees. Comes on automatically.

7 degrees here, so yes it absolutely should be on.
