Anxious today as car has just gone in for its MOT

It’s 2014 model. For about 70k on the clock.

It’s always passed first time so far, but have a bad feeling it won’t this time. I desperately need my car for work and caring responsibilities. We don’t have the money for extensive repairs or a new car.

I feel I’ll spend the day ruminating. He seems to think I’ll hear by 12pm. Says call if I haven’t by then.

It had a service a few months ago and I paid out £600 in repairs including all four tyres replaced!
So I’ll be gutted if it fails now. I’m like this every year 😫

Same here, it's pretty nerve wracking.
You can check online tho. Which can prepare you before they call, if you know what sort of time it will be done.

Download an app called vehicle smart. You put your reg number in and it shows all mots etc so you'll know if it's passed or what it needs if it hasn't. It's a game changer for frazzled nerves on mot day as you know what you're up against if it fails before the dreaded call lol 😆

I have the gov website up with check MOT status and I keep refreshing it! I only dropped it off 30 mins ago!

You don’t need an app for that @Angelchick1971 it’s all on the .gov website- just search MOT checker

somekindof · 13/01/2026 09:33

It’ll most likely be fine OP, recently serviced means probably advisories at most. Fingers crossed for you

Fingers crossed for you! Mine went in yesterday. I thought it would need something big & expensive, and it just needed a £50 part and £50 labour. Result! I honestly feel like I have saved £800.

I desperately need my car for work and caring responsibilities.

Then you need your car to be safe @Cottonwoolclouds !

The average post-repair bill after an MOT is £300. I would advise budgeting 50% more than that and keeping a sinking fund of £500 or so a year for repairs or consumables (new tyres etc) for around MOT time.

If you don't have this, fair enough - I get it. And it sounds like you've actually done all that already - the £600 for service and tyres should go a long way to helping offset any costs.

RosesAndHellebores · 13/01/2026 09:39

How have your MOT and service got so far out of line? Mine have always been done together, so the MOT informs bigger decisions. My gge/mechanic have always warned me when something big might come up in the next 12/18 months.

£600 for four new tyres and a service was a good price. The service work may have identified anything the MOT will pick up andnhave dealt with it in advance.

Fingers crossed, the repairs aren't too expensive and you can get your money's worth out of the tyres.

I hate MOT day. I only managed to get mine booked in the day before it was due and I was living in fear it would fail (it didn't thankfully!).

Cottonwoolclouds · 13/01/2026 12:30

It passed, with no advisories! Thank god!
I'm very relieved.
