Pop bottle tops attached for recycling

Amongst many other things more serious than this, DH insists on ripping off the plastic tops attached to bottles to allow for better recycling. At first I gave him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he wasn't aware of what the new design was about. But every time he takes the tops off it leaves behind two very sharp plastic spikes which stick in your hand every time you use the bottle, so eventually I asked him not to do this. He said ok, as if he had now realised what this is for, and I was relieved that for once he'd actually listened and was taking my advice. But ever since then he has ploughed on ripping every top off as before. Is he doing this on purpose? It is driving me mad. For context, it takes a lot for me to pull him up on things, and I know for a fact every time I speak up he will confuse the hell out of me with mad counter-arguments, so much so that it's easier never to say anything. And as this example illustrates, I am wasting my breath saying anything anyway.

Hmm. There’s more to this than bottle tips right? Why does it take a lot to bring stuff up? What’s his reaction?

BogRollBOGOF · 12/01/2026 19:58

I pull the bottle tops off. Having a bottle top flapping around your face while trying to drink is even more annoying than the stupid spikes left behind from pulling it off.

I put them back on for disposal as I always did anyway.

You have a husband problem not a bottle top problem.

BrendaSmall · 12/01/2026 20:19

It’s easier if they’re pulled off, you can still recycle them!

Fizzy pop drinks are not good. 😊

Perhaps he is the one who is being a dick, who knows. But 'mad counterarguments'? Just from the bare info in your post, it could be that you are picking him up on little things and dismissing his defensive remarks as 'mad'.

I think the joined-on bottle tops are a flipping nuisance and I have sympathy with people who pull them off (so long as they also recycle them)

I'd be more concerned about the other things more serious than this.

He recycles the bottles but puts the tops in the bin

Is he quite stupid?

They're attached to make recycling easier and to stop litter, which I recognise isn't an issue in your home.

Then he's a dick the whole reason for attaching them is to recycle them together!

The attached bottle top is the best thing to come out of the EU. No longer do I need two hands to drink from a bottle...one to drink and one to hold the lid. Wonderful.

'its easier never to say anything'
is not a good thing to believe about a relationship where you should feel safe and valued, OP
