Lost passport - help

I’m currently at my parents house in France, due to travel home to the UK on Tuesday. I’ve lost my passport. I’ve torn the house apart today and can’t find it anywhere. Please help me with ideas of where to look. Places I’ve looked so far:

Inside my car and my parents car

In my room, including emptying the wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside tables, long high shelf in my bedroom. I’ve looked under them all too, including the bed. I’ve emptied and repacked every bag etc too.

My Mum has checked her mezzanine landing (set up as office) and her bedroom.

The upstairs attic has been checked, all chest of drawers etc looked inside.

The living room/dining room - all drawers, shelves etc have been searched.

It definitely came into the house and was in the living room for a while, before we think it was taken upstairs.

I’m completely panicking and very very stressed about it 😳😢

Has anyone left the house that could have picked it up ( ie it’s gone back to the UK with another relative )

I’ve asked everyone who was here and they’ve all said they haven’t taken it.

Check the rubbish. It could have been scooped up and thrown out with Christmas things. Or put away with Christmas decorations?

Unfortunately can’t check the rubbish, in my parents area of France you have to take rubbish to communal villages bins and it’s been taken many times recently (including this morning 😢). We’ve checked the Christmas decorations boxes.

I think you may have to accept that it’s lost and you won’t find it. Especially as it may have gone out with the rubbish and that would be in a communal bin x

Is it a more recent passport - I.e. dark blue? Only asking as we spent ages looking for DH’s and were looking for the old burgundy colour forgetting that he had a new one and it was a different colour! It was in his backpack all along. Other places we have found our lost passports are on the printer/scanner and down the side of the car seat.
Good luck!

If it has been put in a draw, it might have fallen down the back of the unit. Lost my daughters this way, when I open the draw it was pushed out the back of it, and ended up under the draw.

Id do another search of bags and clothing, I know you'll have done it already but things tend to be in the place you'd expect them to be but sometimes you just don't see them.

Also check any cars you've been in again

Zanatdy · 11/01/2026 20:37

You may need to get an emergency travel doc if can’t find it.

AuditAngel · 11/01/2026 20:40

When I lost mine it was in an inside zip pocket of a handbag, found after it had been replaced

Cushionseams · 11/01/2026 20:43

I'd left mine in the jacket I'd worn when last travelling - I could have sworn I'd put it in its designated spot.

HewasH2O · 11/01/2026 20:45

Have you called lost property at the ferry terminals? How did you get from the ferry to your parent's house?

TalulahJP · 11/01/2026 20:45

what would your mum have taken to the place she keeps documents when she carried the passport as she prob did a few things at the same time eg put it on top of linen or laundry and a book and a tie, and then she went to the cupboard the office and the bedroom and wardrobe.

Onlyashappyas · 11/01/2026 20:47

Does your travel insurance cover lost passports? They maybe able to advise the easiest way to get a temporary passport?

Lochroy · 11/01/2026 20:48

Last time we lost one, it had been popped horizontally on top of books in a bookcase and then gone down the back of them.

KellsBells7 · 11/01/2026 20:52

Can you picture where you were when you asked your mum to put it with theirs? I know it sounds daft but sit with a cup of tea and visualise as much as possible from the last time you know you saw it - What were you wearing? What bag were you using? Did you hand it to your Mum when you asked her to keep it safe?

Twinkletwinkly · 11/01/2026 20:54

Could whoever carried it upstairs have been wearing a dressing gown or cardigan with a deep pocket and popped it in a pocket to carry it upstairs then didn’t remove it?

Also have you checked laundry basket?

hohahagogo · 11/01/2026 20:56

Pockets, dh usually finds his in a jacket pocket when he can’t find it, mine is usually in my bedside drawer

3luckystars · 11/01/2026 20:57

Is there any chance there is a small zip in the front of your Case that you forgot about?

We also had that happen. Can't remember if it was a passport ir something else a similar size. Had looked more than once, and pulled the drawer out as far as I could, but then shobe a torch in and could see it at the back.

Damnloginpopup · 11/01/2026 21:09

Under the mattress or on top of a cupboard.

Cheeseandonioncrispswithmytea · 11/01/2026 21:14

Look in all the obvious places - but also look in the places you never would expect it to be in a million years.

when my son was a teenager - the night before his French exchange trip - his passport disappeared. We knew it was in the house - but we couldn’t find it anywhere. we turned the place upside down - eventually it was discovered - in his younger brothers room in the Box of Brio train set.

How it got there we never have never worked out - but the relief on finding it was immense. so search everywhere no matter how ridiculous it seems

if you’re of the praying disposition try asking St Anthony to intercede ( saint of lost things)

Cadenza12 · 11/01/2026 21:18

Stop panicking deep breath and calmly go through everything. Think back to where you saw it last and work from there. .

thereare4lights · 11/01/2026 21:19

Look inside everything. Missed my cousin's wedding as my passport was inside a CD case. Go through every single thing in every single room. It will be somewhere.

Lougle · 11/01/2026 21:25

I thought I had lost mine but it was in a zipped compartment of my travel rucksack. I had checked every other pocket but hadn't noticed the one that sits against the bottom of my back. I had slipped it in there after Passport Control on the way home.
