Very have sent my 16 yr old son a letter offering him £1000 credit

The letter says 'there's a fab offer waiting for you and that he should apply. Obviously given his age I'm sure it would be refused but the first paragraph in the letter details we know you usually buy things on your debit card.
It's a child account with the Halifax bank ffs. How is his personal information being passed on when he is still a child?

Has he bought anything from Very? If not, I’d be worried about identity theft because they can’t possibly have got his details from the electoral roll.

He’s 16 ? You can’t legally get any credit til you’re 18 can you ?

No he's never bought anything from Very. He does buy things online and in stores. Recently connected his card details to his Meta Quest so wondering if anything to do with that.

Has he ever lied about his age?

slughater · 11/01/2026 12:08

good thing he showed it to you
now you can explain to him the hazards of credit
but I would also be complaining, to Very, to Halifax, not sure who else, this is outrageous

Good point

Fillyourdreams · 12/01/2026 18:22

Not aware that he's lied about his age anywhere. Sorry I'm a bit slow can someone explain how this could have caused the letter if he did?
I've sent a letter to Very asking for an explanation and to delete him from their database.

Your son has most likely applied for something and lied about his age.

slughater · 12/01/2026 18:47

if they give you grief, tell him to contact them with a Subject Access Request

GAJLY · 12/01/2026 18:49

I had that letter this week because I opened an account with Very but never actually bought anything.
