Solo travel- is it that odd?

I’ve always loved travelling and would have loved to go backpacking in my younger years but didn’t have the confidence. I’m now in my fourties and married with kids in older primary/younger high school. My husband enjoys fairly adventurous, independent family holidays but says he finds city breaks abroad stressful with all the travel etc. I am an introvert and although I could probably persuade a friend to go I don’t relish the idea of spending an extended period of time with someone other than immediate family. I’m considering going away by myself for a couple of budget long weekends- off peak, staying in basic accommodation. I particularly fancy Eastern Europe.
I mentioned this to a friend and she said it’s a very strange thing to do. She said if her or her husband suggested this the other would assume they were cheating or up to something else dodgy. I know it’s quite unusual but is it really that strange? My husband would have no particular desire to come and it would mean not having to rope in family to look after the kids. I would obviously take all necessary safety precautions as a solo female.

I’m going to Canada on my own this year. In April for 3 weeks. Your friend is weird, solo travel is a wonderful thing, lots of people love it.

Ooh this is one on my list , I want to do the rocky mountaineer train . I did Japan solo a few months ago and I’ve never felt to safe . Had a fabulous time .

The budget is somewhat limited but I am mainly thinking of spreading the budget so there’s the opportunity for more trips.

I wouldn’t want to do this on a budget unfortunately. If you’re travelling solo make sure you’re spending enough to be safe, that might mean you end up spending more than you think to save yourself the stress.

I don't think it's strange but then I'm single so solo travel is my default option. I have some friends who would never, ever do it and tbh I feel a bit sorry for them that they're so unadventurous. Go and have a lovely time!

Me too!! Also, if I was in a relationship I’d still like to be able to do solo trips.

I love solo traveling. It’s the only way I feel I properly recharge.

DH was uncomfortable with it at first but I pointed out, the logistics of what I want to do, hiking, spending as much time roaming and exploring various museums and cultural landmarks, excursions, etc and how that doesn’t work with him and kids in tow especially when I’m someone who wants to get up in the early mornings to reach places so I can have the full day and sun and his idea of a holiday is just lying about and going on runs which is no different if he were at home and it’s easier to do that than it is the things I want to do with kids in tow on a holiday without having to factor in food, bathroom breaks, and other logistics when kids are involved. I could have a meal without being constantly interrupted, pulled on, or on alert.

I also pointed out he could go somewhere solo if he wanted to. He gave it a go and really enjoyed it. His past solo trips were for work and sports.

This is where hostels come in, especially in cities. They nearly all have private rooms as well as dorms, they have helpful friendly staff, they're a great source for information, and they're no longer just for young people. I've met lots of other older people in hostels.

Wroclaw and Sarajevo are actually the main contenders where to go first. Great to hear such good reviews.

I ve been to Sarajevo and Wroclaw, both are fantastic but Wroclaw is a bit easier to navigate, the food is delicious and it’s a beautiful place to wonder around. I always stay somewhere budget and take a walking tour to find my surroundings on the first day and get some local recommendations.

I solo travel all the time - do not understand why anyone thinks it's strange?? Probably wouldn't say that if it was a man travelling alone.
I also enjoy holidays with family and friends but definitely love going off on my own adventures.

I'm only doing the train from Toronto to Montreal, 5 hours, I couldn't manage more than that!
