Is it normal to eat cereal in the middle of the night?

DH often eats a bowl of cereal in the middle of the night - after having eating a full dinner around 8. I think this is odd as he shouldn't be hungry at night but he says he is! What do you think?

Well he obviously is hungry so…

Are you concerned for health reasons or is it just that you think “he shouldn’t be hungry”?

Hockorydickerydock · 10/01/2026 12:35

My mum does this weirdly enough

zurigo · 10/01/2026 12:36

18-year-old DS tends to do this after he comes home from the gym.

Spoodles · 10/01/2026 12:37

In the middle of the night, as in he wakes up eats cereal and then goes back to bed? It sounds like a habit he's got into rather than actual hunger.

TomatoSandwiches · 10/01/2026 12:38

I remember from my teenage years all my boyfriends ate huge bowls of cereal after dinner/before bed so I would say yes.

MotorbikeStuntRider · 10/01/2026 12:38

Munchies?

NewYearNewMee · 10/01/2026 12:38

Are we talking at like 10-12 before bed, or waking up at 3am to do it?

Littletreefrog · 10/01/2026 12:39

You mean in the middle of the night as I'm waking up from being asleep to eat cereal then going back to sleep? I'm which case that is odd.

If you mean eating cereal in the evening then no not odd. My 18 year old DS eats cereal several times a day.

BaronessBomburst · 10/01/2026 12:39

DS does this. He's 15 and eats every two hours, if he's not asleep. So if we're up late watching a film he'll eat cereal or fruit before going to bed.
Fortunately he loves porridge.

AhBiscuits · 10/01/2026 12:40

DH always snacks loads in the evening. I guess he's hungry 🤷 I don't feel the need to eat after dinner.

2026x · 10/01/2026 12:40

Is he overweight? If not then he obviously needs the calories.

MidnightMeltdown · 10/01/2026 12:40

I’ve done this before (not regularly). Usually if I’ve had dinner too early or I’ve had too much sugar/carbs/alcohol so blood sugar drops in the night

Round111 · 10/01/2026 12:41

If I was hungry and awake I’d probably have cereal as it’s quick and easy. I often have it as a “snack” at any time during the day so the middle of the night wouldn’t be any different. I think the issue isn’t the cereal but whether someone is overeating when they don’t need to be. Middle of the night is an unusual time to be eating generally.

Octavia64 · 10/01/2026 12:41

I don’t have cereal but I’m often up in the middle of the night and I’ll usually have a cup of tea and a biscuit.

i’m disabled and my pain meds don’t last through the night so so usually get up about 2-3 am and take some more with a cup of tea.

PistachioTiramisu · 10/01/2026 12:47

It's usually around 3 am. I guess it isn't that unusual then so I won't comment on it to him any more! He is overweight but I also think it is a habit he has just got into!

I sometimes do this if I have insomnia.

But not every night.

Does he have complex carbs and protein as part of his dinner?

It is unusual and suggests he has poor blood glucose control.
If he's overweight he probably has insulin resistance

It is unusual op; I think some people weirdly don’t understand what you wrote, and are answering about late night snacks before bed, when you clearly wrote in the middle of the night,

If he is waking up to eat then that isn't usual and if he is overweight will definitely not be helping and could be linked to health problems. I would suggest to him he goes to the GP.

Agreed it seems like several posters are answering a completely different question.

I would suggest he goes to see a doctor to rule anything out, especially as he is overweight. If they can't find a reason it does seem like it's a habit and not hunger which he should try and break.

mindutopia · 10/01/2026 13:04

It’s not normal to eat anything in the middle of the night unless you’re a baby, no.

Our bodies need to fast overnight for good metabolic health, not to mention good sleep.

bcski · 10/01/2026 13:42

If it was a snack at midnight (which is what I initially thought - midnight is the middle of the night) before going to bed that wouldn't be that unusual but as you've clarified he wakes up and gets up at 3 am that's not normal.
He needs to look at his diet because he should be able to go through the night without waking up hungry. It could point to an issue with insulin resistance.
I think he should go to the GP and have blood tests for possible diabetes.

WhatFlavourIsIt · 10/01/2026 13:54

I sometimes wake up around 2 have a cup of tea and some jam toast and go back to bed. I've even.seen threads where others are up doing them same.

Hoplittlesbunnieshophophop · 10/01/2026 13:58

When I was 7-9 month pregnant I would demolish a bowl of fruit and fibre at 4 in the morning.....but I do think it's unusual yes

No, this is not normal.
It may have been hunger initially and now it is habit, as you say, with the body automatically waking up at 3am “needing food”.
If he is overweight then there will be obvious health risks related to this, which is very different from teenage boys with ravenous appetites during puberty and those that exercise a lot who load up with carbs for energy.
