Jones & Smith "scam" - do not order til you read

Hello
I saw an advert for Jones & Smith (clothing) on here before New Year. Simple warning: DO NOT ORDER from them. Read on if you would like to know why...

I sometimes but rarely order online. The item looked appealing and "sale" price Inc post so ordered, having checked it had a UK address in case the item didn't suit me or something wrong.

I had a notification a few days after order confirmation about it being flown in. First red flag. Why (if they are in UK)? I wouldn't have ordered otherwise.

I waited patiently for delivery and emailed the business about "the flight" and they evaded my question about returning if not suitable . They simply hoped I liked it...

It arrived, is not "soft and warm", it is itchy - probably polyester but item has no identifying "front or back" of the jumper. It has no label to indicate counter of origin or fabric used, care instructions.

I contacted the company for a refund (repeatedly) and keep getting "offers" eg spend £9.95 more and choose something else) or have to pay for "expensive" (their words) return to Netherlands.

It seems the UK address on their website is part of a scam. They won't allow returns to it. The only way I would get a refund would be send item to Netherlands at my own expense, despite item being poor quality and not matching description. They need to accept and check before refund. I smell another scam that they will not receive it (allegedly) or something wrong with item (to avoid paying a refund).

Save yourself the hassle. AVOID. Item quality could be from a market stall in the 1980s. Cheaply manufactured and something nobody would buy in person.

Edited to amend a typo

I’ve never come across these sites but will watch out.
I found the additional tips noted by @SchnizelVonKrummvery helpful so I don’t understand why you’ve responded in a hostile manner OP? You’ve quoted and replied to two separate posts and tagged the same poster in each so have you accidentally quoted the wrong post?

I know, and it’s easy to discover that with a quick google. My point is they are trying to give the impression to anyone who scans the page quickly that they’re UK when a couple of clicks away shows they are a front.

I do agree that these things - the twee brand name, the pretend UK address - add up to deliberately mislead and that’s part of a scam.

Not a scam in the sense that you won’t receive ANYTHING for your money. But what you get will be crap nine times out of 10 and the same item available on Shein, Ali Baba etc.

Actually. Although I agree its not a total scam, if you listen to the radio 4 episode mentioned up thread apparently for these types of rip off, often the goods dont turn up

Yep I’ve had a similar experience so wary now of ‘anything’ online that I haven’t bought before -On a positive side of this I ordered a weird fish top for my H on Black Friday for £28 down from £65 - took a punt as I saw a guy at work in one -.and it is far far better than I expected - lovely material, very well made, washes well, great colour and arrived in 5 days.

@LemonLass ugh! I’ve just had the same experience from jones&smith! Spent £60 on a long brown coat for it to turn up worse quality then something from shein! I have to pay to ship it back around £20 or maybe even more!!! Sooo frustrated!

Hi OP, something similar happened to a friend. He ordered from what he thought was a company in the Netherlands. Turns out this company fulfills its orders from China (surprise). They sent the wrong item then tried to get him to take 15% discount off the next item he buys as compensation. He just wants his money back but they are saying he needs to pay to return his item (wrong). My friend is like a dog with a bone, so I’m sure to hear the ongoing saga of what happens next 😁.
Hope you manage to have better luck and get your problem resolved.

These companies are absolutely fraudulent. BBC did an excellent programme on this type of scam:

They are harvesting your data and passing on your card details to criminals.

I claimed back on my credit card (not jones and smith, another fake company) and got a full refund.

Weird Fish is a well established Cornish company. Been around since the 90s, selling Fat Face style stuff. Really good quality, lots of natural fibres if you like the style. I don’t know if they still do kids’ stuff, but that was excellent.

Yep , I hadn’t heard of them as I’ve never seen an actual branch ( if they have them) but can honestly say the quality was really good . Looks like a £100 top - on the womens side I’ve got a few Joe browns items and they are very good too and I’ve never seen a branch of that either - I just check if I’ve never heard of a company now on delivery times for anywhere, customer service numbers etc and if outside UK I dont buy , not because I’m obsessively patriotic but because returns can be an outright scam or very difficult and you have less comeback

YellowPixie · 21/04/2026 10:43

You could easily check by googling though that Weird Fish is sold through lots of retailers. Next stocks it online. Whole different ball game from brands like "Jones and Smith".

Yep , I did check - but had never heard of them before checking - I think one thing to be aware of these days is lots of people set up online shops that are simply a brand name just using drop shipping - they don’t stock stuff or make stuff or have warehouses etc - just act Asa Facebook page showroom for others stuff - I know because I had looked into it myself as a sideline - I’m good with Facebook marketing and had some interesting niches I thought would work - I decided against because you simply can’t control the end suppliers quality or shipping or returns process and I could see it could turn out to be managing a total whinge fest over which you have no control - some people though simply don’t care about that -
