Has therapy helped you become a better parent??

I’m sure it has benefits especially when repeating unwanted behaviours from childhood and trying to break the cycle but does it really change you and how you react when your children’s behaviour is challenging?
I know where my issues are coming from, I have a lot of self reflection and criticism and I try hard every day to be a better parent, a calm and respectful one, not snappy or shouty yet I still fail. I’m not expecting perfection but why can’t I control my emotions, responses, frustration? Why is it so hard? It shouldn’t be this hard.
AIBU to think this is just me and therapy won’t change that?

I don't know what you're like as a parent, but FWIW, therapy made me relax about my parenting. I worried a huge amount about it; I worry less now because I realise that the things I worry about are 1) very normal and 2) things I deal with properly (eg., shouting when DD does something dangerous then explaining and apologising when the danger is past). Might it be that you are a good parent but you're still worrying too much to see that?

Yes, absolutely.

Therapy plus meds have changed my life and made the parent I always wanted to be. I'm 50 years old and have never ever been happier or more stable.
