WFH or drive to work 18 miles away

In my previous jobs in the past 20 years- they were walkable when it snowed. 2 miles away max.

About 4 inches of snow has fallen here. I’m unsure if I should drive to work or WFH.

Firstly my car is parked at the far end of blocks of flats’ residential parking in my own allotted parking space.
80% of my journey are on A roads. Then the problem with snow is the increase in accidents and bumps due to drivers’ inability to drive in snow. This week the county council didn’t grit parts of the road as could feel driving over ice.
Then there is the problem of what happens with the weather whilst at work.

Going on the bus isn’t worth it as needs three buses each way and walking 5-10 mins between each bus stop.

So if you were in my situation would you WFH or brave driving. I would need to leave around an hour’s time

Husband has a hybrid contract where they should be in the office 2 days a week. They've been asked to try to get in if they haven't already done their two office days this week. I'm sure he could get there but it's safer for everyone if there's only essential travel and I don't think getting to the office when you can work from home (and do so 3 days a week anyway) is essential but his company are stupid about these things.

Edited

This is really pathetic. Surely they could do 3 days in the office next week when it’s 8-10c and raining? That’s the weather where I am.

Presenteeism is alive and well.
I’m sure they coped just fine with everyone working remotely in 2020 😂

Yep, it's a joke. He doesn't even work with people who sit in the same office as him.

HoseGoblin · 09/01/2026 08:08

As someone who just got in from a 14 hour nightshift dealing with endless RTCs from people going out when they didn't have to, please don't. Stay safe.

I only started this job two months ago after being unemployed for 10 months. Job market is rubbish hence why I have a job 18 miles away. Absolutely nothing available in 5 miles

Having a job 18 miles away is quite normal isn't it? I've always worked with people who lived all kinds of distances away

Still strange that you didn't ask what the area was, how do you know if you're inside or outside it?

Update:
My team leader rang about ten minutes ago saying people who live beyond a certain area have been asked to WFH. I didn’t ask what the certain area is.

Good, sensible of them.

There is no backstory. I feel an idiot if I hear people that work in my office block drove into work where they live similar distances away from work and got similar amounts of snow.

Also it rained heavily before turning into snow and spent £600 on my car last month.

I hope you've decided to WFH! Why would you even bother to attempt it?!

It doesn't matter what other people do coming from different directions!!

If it's not safe, it isn't safe... You may well get stranded!

I used to work 75 miles from base... I could get there as there was an open railway and walk 200 m the last bit to office.

A colleague couldn't get in from 2 miles away, as she lived at top of windy ungritted Hill... The road had no pavement... Cars /vans were getting stuck and hitting other cars...

The boss told her it was insane trying to be in work and to wfh.

She was presumably told she was outside it, it would have been strange and unhelpful for her to waste the time of the person who had to ring everyone to ask for details of the area.Confused

DH's boss is old school and likes everyone to be in but does allow him 1 day per week wfh.
DH has a 1.5hr drive and there's snow here so he has told boss he'll wfh today and he's not happy about it because there's no snow where he is (at work).
He's literally going to sit at a computer all day.
Some workplaces are not nice places.

Lincolnshiresausage · 09/01/2026 08:22

I wfh but have 2 office days per week and like you drive 18 miles each way . I sent a message to my line manager this week and didnt drive in heavy snow. wfh no issue.

My question was to someone saying they would look for a new job on the basis of your first post, but this sounds like you also think it is a long commute. It isn't under normal weather conditions. No wonder people struggle to find work if they are trying to restrict it to under 5 miles.

But the OP says she didn't ask what the area was so how would she know?

You think the person ringing her to let her know some people didn’t have to come in wouldn’t have told her whether she was in our out? Wtf would have been the point of that call?🤦‍♀️

AlexisP90 · 09/01/2026 08:43

Unless my job requires me on site (nurse, doctor etc) this is a total no brainer.

I once got 2 buses and walked 25 minutes to get to work in the snow. I fell over 3 times was soaking wet and freezing.

Got to the office ans found out another colleague (whos house i WALKED PAST on my 25 min walk) hadn't come in because they couldnt drive...

After that my attitude is fuck it. Its a job if it can be done from home its going to be in this instances

I know, maybe the OP just isn't a clear communicator but this doesn't suggest that she wasnt even told where she is in relation to "the area"

My team leader rang about ten minutes ago saying people who live beyond a certain area have been asked to WFH. I didn’t ask what the certain area is.

ErrolTheDragon · 09/01/2026 08:45

Clear enough to me. 🤷‍♀️

CornishYarg · 09/01/2026 08:51

I'm guessing the phone call went something like: "Please feel free to wfh today rather than coming in. We've decided anyone outside a certain area can do the same." So no need for OP to know what the area is, just that she's outside it.

BezMills · 09/01/2026 08:53

Any boss or business should recommend people to WFH, where possible, in conditions like this. Travelling in these conditions is a completely avoidable risk, so it should be avoided.

If you dont need to be in fir meetings etc then wfh, its not a competition of who made it and who didnt, if yiur employer is ok with it just do it

I wasn’t limiting my search to 5 miles but every single job I applied for was 10 plus miles away.

Apparently only 14 people turned up to the office. Usually about 120 people. Eventually I will be hybrid
