To remind you of this crucial safety and navigation tip - you can save people from their planes delaying or getting confused

I just want to remind all mumsnetters to wave at overhead planes and helicopters - it helps the radar waves to 'catch on' to something.
It's preferable to use a long stick, and wave it on a ladder or from a tree, but your hand when you are standing on the ground works too.
Jumping is also OK - just remember to jump on the spot for about 15 seconds.
Wave every time you see a plane - even if it's just a dot in the sky.
It doesn't work when you are indoors - for that you will need to wave out of a window using a stick.

It is also compulsory to wave at trains when on foot, and to people on foot when seated on a train. For the mainline it reduced delays, but for steam trains each exchange of waves is one fewer shovel of coal for the fireman.

And everybody knows that it is only waves from and to people on bridges, tow paths and river banks that keeps pleasure boats afloat. Otherwise, carnage. It’s actually illegal not to wave.

Thank goodness I’ve finally found a thread with some proper hard science in it.

Can I ask you experts a question please? What’s is the actual scientific effect of saying “Look! A tractor!” on that tractor.

Thanks in advance.

It helps the crops grow

It keeps those massive tyres pumped up, thereby helping the farmer with productivity, and thus helping to feed us all. 🚜🌾

Are these rules in a book somewhere, or maybe handed down from parent to child?

Most radars these days use microwaves so they work more quickly.

Every day’s a school day! Thank you, I didn’t know that.

goodnessidontknow · 09/01/2026 08:27

This also applies to shouting yellow car, for the avoidance of accidents and breakdowns we must remind yellow cars of their existence 🤣🤣🤣
Edit for very poor typing 😕

We love to increase the efficiency of Anazon deliveries by punching each other on sight of the vans
Which considering we often drive past the warehouse, can get rather painful, especially if its dispatch time when you can see up to 30 vans in convoy.

The singing of "Bouncing up and down on my Big Red^ Tractor" is the best way (insert correct tractor colour)

TeenToTwenties · 09/01/2026 08:41

No one has pointed out yet that for a cat stretch to work for them it is important any human nearby says 'big stre-e-e-e-tch' while they do it.

Caramel freddo or just a plain one?

I think it depends what they can get on offer in B&M

That's only British Airways planes though. Freddos are very aerodynamic which is lucky. When I waved at a SwissAir plane, I narrowly avoided a Toblerone to the bonce.

I'm laughing too much to come up with a witty response to that.

Cantheowneroftheredcorsapleasemovetheircar · 09/01/2026 09:23

If you're travelling at night and you shout "FOX!!" do they raid your bins a bit less?

Are you sure? I was always taught it had to be pronounced "b-i-i-i-i-i-g stretch".

You need to be careful with American Airlines as they lob Hershey bars at you and, frankly, that's tantamount to a war crime.

I think either works. b-i-i-i-i-g stre-e-e-e-e-tch is probably best!

Good idea - I'll do that just to be safe. I wouldn't want a cat to have an unsatisfying stretch.

Actually makes it worse, because the tractor gets all self conscious and starts slowing down trying to find a hedge to hide behind.

Best to never mention the size of it's wheels tbh.

RessicaJabbit · 09/01/2026 11:44

And whilst we're here, if, for any reason you walk past a police constable... You must nod and say "nice hat" otherwise the hat will fall off their head.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 09/01/2026 17:10

Tillow4ever · 09/01/2026 01:17

Also… radar uses radio waves, so what you’re proposing wouldn’t work at all.

Riiiiighttt... 🙄

Just pop a woolly hat on your car aerial, and Mumsnet will know that you aren't to be in the receiving end of scary stuff.
