Angry woman on plane, Was we BU?

7 hour flight with DH and DS(4). As soon as seatbelt lights went off DH fully reclined exhausted DSs seat so he could sleep. The woman behind snapped at DH to put the seat back up as drinks would be coming around soon. DH said no as drinks currently not being served. She called him a selfish twat to her OH.
Drinks/snacks start coming around. Woman tells DH to put the seat back up. DH put the seat back up half way so to not wake DS. She tells him to put it fully up. He tells her DS is sleeping. Her OH then tells her to speak to steward which she does. Steward asks DH to put the seat back up - he tells her DS is sleeping. I tell him to just put it back up, he again says DS is sleeping. Air Steward starts getting pissed off, I snap at DH to put the bloody seat up. He does so reluctantly and DS does not wake.

Once everything is cleared away he puts the seat fully back again. The woman complains that he’s doing that out of badness because “the kid” is still asleep. Her OH confirms that yes, DH is a twat.

My take on it is that both were being unreasonable at different times. My sister however says this was all on DH.

Your DH is a total arse

Fulmine · 08/01/2026 18:55

Have you had a chat with your DH about why he was behaving like such a twat?

And that’s fine - until refreshments are served

If I am asleep, I do not want to be woken for refreshments. Someone else's wish for me to be upright does not automatically trump my wish to be reclined.

I will accept that a small child does not necessarily need their seat reclined, but in this case, it had been. The woman could and should have asked politely instead of snapping at the DH. If someone is rude to me, I am likely to respond similarly. You catch more flies with honey.

Am I the only person not particularly bothered if the person in front of me reclines? Doesn’t stop me from drinking my wine or reading my book…

If there are rules about when you can recline, the airlines should announce them as part of the welcome to the flight. Something about air travel - (maybe heightened anxiety?!) - makes people act in odd ways, so we seem to need rules to follow.

Saying all that, I never recline my own seat as I don’t want to end up in an argument with the person behind.

I’m not bothered in the slightest if the person in front reclines . I just then recline my seat if I want to nap or rest my back from being bolt upright .

Cabin crew will wake you up and make you put your seat up so the person behind you can have theor food and drink.

Bournetilly · 08/01/2026 18:59

Fully on your DH. Makes it worse that it was an early morning flight and not a night flight.

Supergirl1958 · 08/01/2026 19:01

Sorry but your husband was being massively unreasonable!
Also I’m not sure whether anyone has told you that the title of your post does not make sense!

NoelEdmondsHairGel · 08/01/2026 19:01

Your DH is selfish and rude.

Hasn't happened yet. 🤷‍♀️

Yes your DH is a selfish twat ,,would of served him right if your ds woke up when he declined him again the 2nd time after drinks.
We all have kids and have to travel with them aware that it's not going to be ideal kid friendly spaces doesn't mean we have to be dicks to everyone else .

Ach. One of the risks of air travel is that the person in the seat in front will recline it.

Until airlines stop having reclining seats people are going to recline them.

Yep. Never really understand the drama. And yes plenty of people have reclined seats on me while I'm eating. Shit happens.

It’s not about whether you wanted to be woken up to be offered refreshments though. It’s about the person behind you being able to use their tray and have enough space to eat and drink THEIR refreshments.

SeaUrchinHat · 08/01/2026 19:04

She wanted space and your DH (and you?) didn’t give her that. Seats recline for night flights, not for pampered children. Also, why’s it all ‘on’ your DH? You were there too weren’t you?

Fauchon · 08/01/2026 19:04

Your DH was in the wrong all the way.

You miss my point. Why, and be precise, does their wish for me to be woken trump my wish not to be? The trays still work even with the seat reclined and do not impede the ability to eat or drink.

Pretty much every airline I fly with asks for seats to be upright during the food and drinks service.
I’ve seen cabin crew wake people up to put their seats back in the upright position.
And so they should. By all means recline at all other times if you must but at least have the courtesy to let people eat their meal from a useable tray.

user2848502016 · 08/01/2026 19:08

Sorry but it’s an unwritten rule that you only recline your seat on a long haul night flight

NemesisInferior · 08/01/2026 19:08

Thankfully a lot of planes now do not have seats which recline. It doesn't actually make people any more comfortable, it just means the person behind has less space.

Totally dickish behavour of the DH.

In a standard economy seat the tray is pretty much unusable if the seat in front is reclined.

Nomoremening · 08/01/2026 19:10

For those saying if we don’t like someone reclining then we can just recline too, the thing is some of us don’t like to recline.

The main reason for me is that I don’t want to encroach upon someone’s space, just because it’s been done to me. And occasionally my indigestion can be a bit off on flights so that’s another reason I prefer to be upright.

Overall I prefer to just take the hit as it were and grimace and bear it if someone is reclining, rather than do to the person behind me what I don’t like being done to myself.

And yes joining in the chorus to say your husband was absolutely BU. I’d be embarrassed if anyone I was with behaved like this.

Wonder why you didn’t just put the seat upright yourself or was your husband in between you?

PrestonHood121 · 08/01/2026 19:10

He should moved the seat up willingly when the drinks/food were being served, but the rest of the time the lady behind should have gotten over it. If she had been asleep/wanting to sleep, she would have been reclining her own seat asap.

Climbingrosexx · 08/01/2026 19:11

Airlines need to stop having reclining seats in economy as there just isnt enough space. If someone fully reclined a seat for a 7hr flight it would make the flight pretty miserable

But the steward will ask you to raise the seat if refreshments are being served to the person behind you

Its a health and safety
space and
courtesy issue

Exactly. Just because someone is being selfish twat to you doesn’t make it right for you to be a selfish twat to someone else.
