Angry woman on plane, Was we BU?

7 hour flight with DH and DS(4). As soon as seatbelt lights went off DH fully reclined exhausted DSs seat so he could sleep. The woman behind snapped at DH to put the seat back up as drinks would be coming around soon. DH said no as drinks currently not being served. She called him a selfish twat to her OH.
Drinks/snacks start coming around. Woman tells DH to put the seat back up. DH put the seat back up half way so to not wake DS. She tells him to put it fully up. He tells her DS is sleeping. Her OH then tells her to speak to steward which she does. Steward asks DH to put the seat back up - he tells her DS is sleeping. I tell him to just put it back up, he again says DS is sleeping. Air Steward starts getting pissed off, I snap at DH to put the bloody seat up. He does so reluctantly and DS does not wake.

Once everything is cleared away he puts the seat fully back again. The woman complains that he’s doing that out of badness because “the kid” is still asleep. Her OH confirms that yes, DH is a twat.

My take on it is that both were being unreasonable at different times. My sister however says this was all on DH.

Those saying its ok to recline on an overnight flight need to remember that some people have more than one journey...your 4 hours to Europe could be someone else's second leg of a 20+ hours journey where their body clock thinks its night time and they're shattered. Just because its 11am UK time doesn't mean every passenger on the plane is experiencing the same time zone in the hours before boarding the flight.

Teddleshon1 · 09/01/2026 14:04

It’s ridiculous to set an arbitrary time for when it’s acceptable to recline a seat. Say a flight departs LHR at 9am, some will have had a decent night’s sleep and a quick cab ride to the airport whilst many will have been travelling most of the night and had little or no sleep. Just have your seat upright during meals and drinks.

Absolutely! Or if one is feeling particularly miffed, take off your shoes and stick your feet through the gap!

You realise this is abuse of a toddler though right?

poor kid! Not their fault. Why shouldn’t the kid recline. They’ve paid for their seat as much as an adult. Obvs they didn’t pay, their parent did.

after some of the comments on here I’m now more included to recline!!

If people need to then fine but not when food or drinks are being served and with a little curtesy to others.

OPs dh wanted the seat reclined when the drinks were being served which the air stewardess asked him to not do !

He was reclining the seat out of pure vindictiveness which makes him a selfish, entitled, ignorant idiot

Why? Personally I recline my seat as soon as possible because I suffer terribly with cramp when my hips are bent at 90 degrees. If the person behind me asked me to put my seat up at mealtime I would, but I’d put it back down as soon as the trays were collected.
The tables in the backs of the seats are designed so that they are still useable if the seat is reclined. I guess if you’re really fat said table might be too near to ones tummy for comfort though.

They are not

Yeah I get that but hurting the toddler isn’t the way to go.

Benjithedog · 09/01/2026 15:32

They are not

A properly functioning tray table on seats Ive seen stay horizontal when it's associated seat is reclined, but they do shift aft by ? and there's a slight loss off of overhead clearance at the front edge...

Some people do find they can be used when the seat is reclined but it's a bit of an it depends.

Tiswa · 09/01/2026 16:01

it really depends doesn’t it as not all airline indeed not all aircraft type are going to be the same!

I have been on a flight when something similar did kick off but the reverse - lady reclining child in seat behind and ended with child getting her head hit. It was only the threats of it escalating by the cabin crew that calmed it down.

Raynaud · 08/01/2026 17:35

He said DS would wake up with a stiff neck otherwise

So because of this possibility, the other passenger had to have her (already very small) allocated space reduced? Your young and sleeping child’s comfort trumps everyone else’s comfort??? Really???

I understand we all want our children to be as comfortable as possible, but this is a moment to think of the greater good. Your DH seriously put someone else out, was asked several times to correct the situation and continued to behave like a dickhead.

so yes, he was BVVVVVU.

Skybluepinky · 09/01/2026 16:26

Yes your husband!

MNLurker1345 · 09/01/2026 16:37

Have you ever been on a flight where the person in front reclines their seat as soon as the seat belt sign goes off?
It has happened to me a couple of times and It is annoying. I didn’t have the courage to say anything and sat and endured it. The person that does it is annoying and selfish. They are only thinking of themselves, but that is the world we live in.
On a long haul flight or night flight yes, but a seven hour flight not essential even for a sleeping child.

Mumofmarauders · 09/01/2026 18:02

Blimey, I’m very much in the minority, maybe because I don’t fly much. But I didn’t know there were all these rules about flying and reclining, I’d have thought as soon as the signs say you’re allowed to recline the seat then it’s fair game to do it (and someone complaining about doing so in order that a small child can sleep is pretty awful). I’m obviously wrong because the steward disagreed! But I would have probably done the same as your DH 🤷🏽‍♀️

Zerosleep · 09/01/2026 18:04

If you buy an economy seat then you should expect that people in front may recline their seat and it reduces your space. If you want more room then pay for premium, business or other. It’s one of the risks of an economy seat. Does it annoy me if someone does it to me, yes it does but it’s how it works in economy.

Laurmolonlabe · 09/01/2026 18:05

You can't full recline unless the person behind you is doing the same , so never when food or drinks are being served. It's a flight , no one has a right to uninterrupted sleep at someone else's expense, even if it is a child- it's on your husband I'm afraid.

AccidentalPrawnYouFool · 09/01/2026 18:14

There’s a special place in hell for people who recline their seats when it’s not a night flight.

Chinsupmeloves · 09/01/2026 18:26

It's unreasonable that airlines don't allow enough room for seats to recline. What's the point of them as most of us don't recline due to these reasons of food, drinks and squashing others behind.

24kPalamino · 09/01/2026 18:29

I am a believer that the seats recline, so I will get comfortable by reclining.

However, I keep my seat upright until after dinner has been served and cleared away.

Then I recline, so this might be 3 hours into a 9 hour flight.

Then I pop my seat back up for pre landing snacks, so about 7 hours into the flight, and it remains upright until landing.

Bringing the seats up for meals and drinks is just basic manners. It’s incredibly difficult to use the tray on a reclined seat.

whatsit84 · 09/01/2026 18:29

Your DH was a twat. Good the air steward stood up for the people behind you, I had a flight last year where I had to eat with a reclined seat in front of me due to spineless air stewards.

My3dahliasarebloominlovely · 09/01/2026 18:31

7 hours??? Yep, your DH is a twat

notimagain · 09/01/2026 18:32

There’s a special place in hell for people who recline their seats when it’s not a night flight.

So you'd insist on no recline on, say, a daylight, maybe 12-13 hour plus sector from the Far East to the UK?

Idontcareboutthestateofmyhair · 09/01/2026 18:41

If your DH continues in this way with your son, your son is going to grow up an entitled little shit with no respect for anyone. A bit like your DH methinks.

IndigoIsMyFavouriteColour · 08/01/2026 17:28

He was BU, it’s horrible to be sat behind a reclined seat for an entire journey.

*sitting

Trishyb10 · 09/01/2026 18:42

how would you feel if someone did that to you ? Your as bad as him, precious…

THIS! And you never recline before service.

BrendaSmall · 09/01/2026 18:53

If I’ve got a seat that reclines, then I’m going to be using it!
if I had a sleeping child in a reclined seat in front of me then I wouldn’t complain
