Angry woman on plane, Was we BU?

7 hour flight with DH and DS(4). As soon as seatbelt lights went off DH fully reclined exhausted DSs seat so he could sleep. The woman behind snapped at DH to put the seat back up as drinks would be coming around soon. DH said no as drinks currently not being served. She called him a selfish twat to her OH.
Drinks/snacks start coming around. Woman tells DH to put the seat back up. DH put the seat back up half way so to not wake DS. She tells him to put it fully up. He tells her DS is sleeping. Her OH then tells her to speak to steward which she does. Steward asks DH to put the seat back up - he tells her DS is sleeping. I tell him to just put it back up, he again says DS is sleeping. Air Steward starts getting pissed off, I snap at DH to put the bloody seat up. He does so reluctantly and DS does not wake.

Once everything is cleared away he puts the seat fully back again. The woman complains that he’s doing that out of badness because “the kid” is still asleep. Her OH confirms that yes, DH is a twat.

My take on it is that both were being unreasonable at different times. My sister however says this was all on DH.

Nope your DH was totally in the wrong. It’s such a horribly invasion of personal space and a 4year old does not need a reclined seat to sleep. The height of selfishness

StressedLP1 · 08/01/2026 20:26

Trophy136 · 08/01/2026 19:56

If the seat has a recline function then he has every right to use it. She could have reclined hers back to get more room too. If she has that much of a problem with what the person in front does with their own seat then she should have upgraded to first class.

Agree. Seats recline. If it’s unacceptable then make a different choice.

EyeLevelStick · 08/01/2026 20:28

RessicaJabbit · 08/01/2026 18:23

I just push them back 😂

You don’t though, do you.

The seats only push back up when the button in the armrest is pressed. You pushing them might move them a bit, but they won’t stay.

SeaUrchinHat · 08/01/2026 20:31

Seats recline for anyone who wants to recline them for whatever reason for any time of day or night. Although I think many airlines will ask you to put seat upright at mealtimes. Unless person behind you is asleep too or also recline & not bothered

Well yes in theory, but in practice? Not so much. If someone behind you asks you not to you respect that, surely?

CatchTheWind1920 · 08/01/2026 20:32

Your DH is the unreasonable one.

My 5.5 year old curls up on his seat and lies his head in my lap. No reason you couldn't have done something similar.

ThroughTheRedDoor · 08/01/2026 17:30

Ach. One of the risks of air travel is that the person in the seat in front will recline it.

Until airlines stop having reclining seats people are going to recline them.

This. They recline for a reason. It’s tough s* on the person behind.

TessSaysYes · 08/01/2026 20:34

Your DH is a dick. In my book.

Well that could work both ways couldn't it, the person behind could be expected to respect the person in front's wish to recline. Perhaps a middle ground of a half recline is in order?! The main thing is the seats should definitely be up for drinks and meals, or if a steward tells you to.

SeenYourArse · 08/01/2026 20:39

People are absolute cunts about reclining seats, here’s a fact…they have this facility and it’s there to be used if you dont like it book a first row seat or upper class other than that tough shit you have no right to stop someone else using the facility their seat provides.

MissDoubleU · 08/01/2026 20:39

Pootle40 · 08/01/2026 20:33

Except for the rule of the plane being the seats have to be upright during drinks/food service as well as during landing and take off. OP’s DH refused to put the seat up as drinks were being served and even pushed back when told to do so by the air steward.

Seats can recline, and you can do so during set times. Her DH felt so entitled to ignore these set times and rules because apparently they just don’t apply to him. That’s why he is BU

ImWearingPantaloons · 08/01/2026 20:41

If you don’t like the fact that the seat in front of you has reclined, then recline your own and maintain the space between your seat and the one in front?

Im with your DH.

Talapia · 08/01/2026 20:42

Next time you fly, ensure your dh has the seat behind DC. You can recline the seat and not cause any issues to anyone, as it clearly wouldn't be an issue for your DH to have his space encroached on for 7 hours.

Ohthatsabitshit · 08/01/2026 20:45

Put the seat up as a courtesy during meal times otherwise recliner whenever you like. You’ve paid for the space reclined seat to reclined seat not upright to upright.

OnlyReplyToIdiots · 08/01/2026 20:48

I hope the OP shows her DH this thread.

Lemondessert · 08/01/2026 20:55

I just would not recline a seat full stop on a plane with minimal legroom. I don’t want my head in their way anymore than they want to feel squashed. If someone did this as soon as we took off I would think they were selfish.

OhNoItsThePinkyPonk · 08/01/2026 20:57

Wait what? If seats weren’t meant to be reclined then they wouldn’t recline. It’s perfectly easy to eat, drink and see the screen with the seat in front reclined. Your DH may have got unnecessarily snotty but it’s the couple behind who are in the wrong 100%, you paid for the seats and can do whatever TF you want with them, including reclining them. Frankly if I had a child in the row in front of me I would give anything to ensure they slept through, and whinging about reclined seats is just dickish.

LegoRockets · 08/01/2026 21:04

InterIgnis · 08/01/2026 17:32

It’s fine to recline seats when permitted to. He was unreasonable not to straighten it fully when required to do so, to the point of arguing with the stewardess over it, however.

Yup, this is correct.

JHound · 08/01/2026 21:05

Your DH was being a total c*nt.

Reclining is not for meal and drinks service. Your child would have been fine upright for a couple hours while the service is on.

Londonrach1 · 08/01/2026 21:06

Dh in the wrong. The poor lady behind your ds. Is your awkward dh normally like this.

JHound · 08/01/2026 21:08

ThroughTheRedDoor · 08/01/2026 17:30

Ach. One of the risks of air travel is that the person in the seat in front will recline it.

They say quite clearly to put them back to upright position during drinks and food service as the steward made clear.

bcski · 08/01/2026 21:12

Seats are meant to recline and therefore you can recline them.
However, you are supposed to put them back up for the drink and meal service and also on take off on landing.
Your DH was being a complete knob refusing to put the seat back up during the drinks service and for arguing with the flight attendant.
He was within his rights to recline it when the seatbelt sign had gone off before the drinks' service and the woman was unreasonable at that point. She was also unreasonable after the drink/meal service because people are free to recline their seats if they want. However, he was still being a dick at that point because there was no need to recline the seat as your child was already asleep so he was just doing it to be an ass to the woman behind.

TiredCatLady · 08/01/2026 21:13

Yeah your DH is a twat. Arguing with the stewardess as well, FFS.

How do you think he would have reacted had someone done the same to him? Probably kicked off right?

JHound · 08/01/2026 21:14

Greenfinch7 · 08/01/2026 19:33

I fly quite a lot, always in economy and on cheap airlines- to me this is just not a problem. Seats recline so people can sleep or rest, and I don't find that people reclining their seats gets in my way- it is not even a problem to eat or drink with a reclined seat in front of you. I am an average sized woman- 5'7".

Depends on the airline. Qantas reclines quite deeply on long haul to Oz and it’s near impossible to eat / drink if the person ahead of you is fully reclined.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 08/01/2026 21:20

PhuckTrump · 08/01/2026 17:34

You should really only be reclining during an overnight flight, and even then after the meal service.

I do agree that this escalated more than it should have. BUT I’ve been in many flights and this rule is never shared?

if you can’t recline a seat for whatever reason they they need to announce it clearly or disable it.

SchoolDilemma17 · 08/01/2026 21:21

Raynaud · 08/01/2026 17:35

He said DS would wake up with a stiff neck otherwise

What nonsense. Your DH is an idiot
