Angry woman on plane, Was we BU?

7 hour flight with DH and DS(4). As soon as seatbelt lights went off DH fully reclined exhausted DSs seat so he could sleep. The woman behind snapped at DH to put the seat back up as drinks would be coming around soon. DH said no as drinks currently not being served. She called him a selfish twat to her OH.
Drinks/snacks start coming around. Woman tells DH to put the seat back up. DH put the seat back up half way so to not wake DS. She tells him to put it fully up. He tells her DS is sleeping. Her OH then tells her to speak to steward which she does. Steward asks DH to put the seat back up - he tells her DS is sleeping. I tell him to just put it back up, he again says DS is sleeping. Air Steward starts getting pissed off, I snap at DH to put the bloody seat up. He does so reluctantly and DS does not wake.

Once everything is cleared away he puts the seat fully back again. The woman complains that he’s doing that out of badness because “the kid” is still asleep. Her OH confirms that yes, DH is a twat.

My take on it is that both were being unreasonable at different times. My sister however says this was all on DH.

"It’s very difficult on some flights to get your table unfolded if someone is reclined."

I fly 20+ times a year on a wide variety of airlines and this has never been my experience.

Well it was for me in March, the table was coming right up to my chest if I remember correctly. However even if that was not the case - as I’ve said - the policy is still for seats to be upright during meal times.

Thehop · 08/01/2026 19:31

Anyone can recline a seat if they want to

she was BU

You miss my point. Why, and be precise, does their wish for me to be woken trump my wish not to be? The trays still work even with the seat reclined and do not impede the ability to eat or drink.

Because when you recline your seat it moves the tray closer to the person behind you leaving them with much less space.
It's rude and selfish.

Greenfinch7 · 08/01/2026 19:33

I fly quite a lot, always in economy and on cheap airlines- to me this is just not a problem. Seats recline so people can sleep or rest, and I don't find that people reclining their seats gets in my way- it is not even a problem to eat or drink with a reclined seat in front of you. I am an average sized woman- 5'7".

cherish123 · 08/01/2026 19:34

DH was rude and entitled.

VIOLETPUGH · 08/01/2026 19:35

Nothing wrong with reclining, but lets be honest your husband was being awkward and a complete nob.

Maybe someone whose first language isn’t English?

I suppose that's a fair point as this took place on a plane, although it wasn't in quotes.

OnARainyDay2012 · 08/01/2026 19:39

I think if it's a night flight and food service is finished then its OK to recline. Otherwise not.

What you decide to do with your seat doesn’t just impact you…it impacts on others. Therefore you need to consider their comfort too, not just your own? It’s hardly rocket science.

notimagain · 08/01/2026 19:39

Wildflowerwonder · 08/01/2026 19:30

Recline during the day in economy though? Surely you can see how unreasonable this is?

I'm still not sure why day/night comes into this.

As lots of pps have said you can be jumping on a day flight having connected from a horrible red eye or just worked a night shift and need sleep.

There are also lots of Long Haul 12 hour plus (sometimes plus plus ) daylight sectors .... people aren't seriously suggesting no recline on those...are they?

MyNeedyLilacBird · 08/01/2026 19:40

Your husband is an absolute twat and I'd be embarrassed if mine behaved like this. The seat didn't need to be fully reclined at anyppont. Poor woman ,it's absolutely miserable and claustrophobic when a seat is reclined. I think the function to reclined should be taken out then all these arguments would stop. It's why I always do business class on longer flights now. Absolute heaven in comparison

True! I did find your comment humorous but then realised it was likely a different language thing

Lostinbrum · 08/01/2026 19:42

I been on a fair few European flights last year and most had seats that wouldn't recline. The sooner this is rolled out the better

luckylavender · 08/01/2026 19:42

Don’t defend him, he behaved really badly

Louielove · 08/01/2026 19:43

Everyone knows it’s really fucking inconsiderate to recline the seat while everyone is crammed in like sardines - he shouldn’t have even tried it

DidIForgetPEAgain · 08/01/2026 19:43

Nomoremening · 08/01/2026 19:28

No they are not bizarre. Perhaps you’re not aware but Flight policy is for seats to be upright during meals and for good reason.

It’s very difficult on some flights to get your table unfolded if someone is reclined, the reflection on society is the way the OPs husband behaved. Some people are very entitled and inconsiderate.

They are only concerned with themselves and/or their own “little family” - and to heck with anyone else. Especially if they have children.

It’s definitely became worse post pandemic.

Edited

Very bizarre.
flight policy 🙄
would you really wake up a 4 year old child, or make them uncomfortable whilst they are trying to sleep. I wouldn’t. I say this being 5”11 - I know how uncomfortable planes are. And I think it’s bizarre adult behaviour to argue about it. I would use my husbands tray for my drink if I needed to- and who is eating aeroplane food- it’s gross.

LumpyandBumps · 08/01/2026 19:45

I know there is no rule about reclining except at mealtimes, but I think it’s a bit antisocial except when sleeping at night.
I try not to recline but on a recent economy flight the person in front of me reclined from the outset, so after the meal I reclined mine as I felt claustrophobic in such a small space.
The people behind complained to the stewardess who asked me to put my seat back up. I said I would willingly do so if she got the person in front of me to do the same, as the rule needed to apply to everyone.

I fly a similar number of times long haul and with a range of airlines.
In my experience if the seat in front of you is reclined then it makes using hand tray difficult. That’s why the cabin crew ask people to put their seat in the upright position during the meal service. That’s pretty standard across all airlines ime

DidIForgetPEAgain · 08/01/2026 19:47

Letitgoooletitgooo · 08/01/2026 19:28

Well, if you’re trying to eat & not possible due to do so. Comfortably with seat in front reclined then I think it’s ok for airline to ask you to put seat upright at mealtimes?

Yes but she started being argumentative beforehand, it takes them nearly an hour to get to economy drinks from take off. You have a sleeping child in front of you, at most you’d say excuse me I can’t get my tray down, do you mind just while I eat. The problem is everyone is so selfish, everyone only thinks of themselves. It’s a sleeping 4 year old.

notimagain · 08/01/2026 19:49

I know there is no rule about reclining except at mealtimes

...and even that isn't a universal rule...

A lot of things people here claiming as rules (written or not), or "Flight Policy"🤔are no such thing.

Best bet is stick with what the cabin crew ask/tell you to do.

Namechangerage · 08/01/2026 19:49

Raynaud · 08/01/2026 17:37

Early morning

Yes he is definitely a twat. How long was the flight?

Seats are not supposed to be reclined at all during drinks or meals. And drinks are served quite quickly so yes it is very unreasonable.

I had a selfish person in front of me once who refused to stop reclining during meal times, I told the flight attendants I really didn’t mind to save them a tricky job. I got a nice full-sized bottle of bubbly for free at the end 😊

Poor you being married to someone that cringe and pig-headed. What an example for your kid 😬

Every flight I’ve ever been on has had people being asked to lift their seat back up during meals/drink service. So it does seem pretty standard.

Bleachedlevis · 08/01/2026 19:50

Couldn’t get past ‘was’ you. Sorry. 😂😱

JuliesName · 08/01/2026 19:50

My 4 year old is more important than any random person, and seats are allowed to be reclined. I love his level of pettiness because she was so rude with how she spoke about him. She can recline too if she wants to.

Biskieboo · 08/01/2026 19:51

If somebody reclines their seat in front of me in a twatish fashion I find I get all clumsy and accidentally bash their seat back on a regular basis which must be terribly annoying for them.
