Asking for a carrier bag in the shop

I get that this isn’t exactly groundbreaking, but I was curious if anyone else has picked up on this and what the deal is with the staff doing it.

I can’t speak for other shops, but at my local Morrisons, the staff usually carry the shopping bags around and you have to ask for one at the self checkout. They do this in other places too of course, but typically they scan the bag for you to confirm you’ve paid for it. In Morrisons, though, they just hand it to you and let you scan it yourself. I know why they do this (theft prevention, although it does feel a bit like being back in school having to ask for one)

What really confuses me is when they walk away and let you scan it on your own, though. How do they know you’ve actually scanned it? It just seems a bit pointless, right? Either scan it for us to make sure it’s been processed or just leave the bags out so we can grab them ourselves and get on with it. I’ve been in a few times lately and it’s just something that caught my attention.

i don’t often buy bags so for me the staff carrying them is handy as I’m unlikely to know where in the checkout area they are kept and just ask the person for one
