AIBU to think councils should do extra waste collections at Xmas, not fewer?

Because regardless of what people "should" be doing, there's always extra to pick up at this time, and going into denial about it creates problems that last for weeks rather than days.

Eg I live in a block of flats, with a communal bin store for three blocks. It was last emptied 3.5 weeks ago and now it's so disgusting with both overflowing recycling and regular bins that the bin lorry came and went today just leaving it in that state. We are all now going to have to pay the management company an extra fee to clear it, and I'll be storing trash and doing tip runs with my own waste until that happens.

Obviously the immediate problem has been caused by people just dumping stuff in there once the bins got full, but it probably wouldn't have happened if we'd had an extra pickup over Xmas - the rest of the year it's fine, but every Xmas it backs up. It's not even solely caused by my immediate neighbours - I've certainly witnessed people driving into the estate and offloading their trash into our stores, presumably because their own collection schedule isn't adequate at this time of year.

AIBU to think that although yes it would be lovely if we lived in a waste-free world where everyone merrily composted their tiny output, simply pretending there isn't a problem actually creates a much bigger problem that could be easily resolved by just one extra waste collection, once a year?

You think they should work extra time over Christmas rather than have a bank holiday off?

Pyew · 07/01/2026 20:10

I think service capacity should increase in line with predictable increased demand. That's a fairly standard approach for all business plans.

The world isn’t going to end because the bin men have Christmas off.

TheFallenMadonna · 07/01/2026 20:12

Meeting increased demand wouldn't come with increased revenue though.

Lmnop22 · 07/01/2026 20:15

I agree with you. We are now charged for green waste but have fewer collection and this includes kitchen food waste which gets very gross very quickly. Also fewer cardboard collections which leads people to just put cardboard in general waste rather than recycle which is counter productive. If we are being asked to separate and recycle, I think the services and collections ought to meet the demand

mutinyonthetwix · 07/01/2026 20:15

YANBU. A pledge for an extra Christmas round of collections would sway my vote in local elections for any party from Tory to Green

Alongside increasing costs, or course. I am not overly happy to be subsidising someone else's additional collections. I think paying for private waste disposal is what you need to do if you happen to generate additional waste over Christmas.
I live in the area with the 20th highest council tax rate in the UK (out of 350-ish). I can barely afford it as is.

Jijithecat · 07/01/2026 20:19

Are you willing to pay more tax to cover the extra collections? If not you're being unreasonable.

Pyew · 07/01/2026 20:20

No the world isn't ending but it's a pita for everyone having to do extra tip runs and store rubbish in our tiny flats when we have no outside space. Presumably this pattern is replicated across the country so it's a drawn out hassle for lots of people that could be averted by just one extra pickup. The knock-on effects far outweigh the extra work involved in being proactive and recognising that, newsflash, there's extra rubbish at Xmas, and scheduling accordingly.

Whilst I disagree with you, frequency of bin collections has been a local election issue I have read about on a number of occasions, and even been said to have led to unexpected results (councils changing party control against the national trend).

Yes let me guess, OP won't want to pay extra council tax for this.

Councils don't have a bottomless pit of money. Most of them are struggling not to go bankrupt.

Everyone generates additional waste over Xmas.

Perhaps we should all be buying less waste generating stuff. Just a thought.

Newyearsameme26 · 07/01/2026 20:24

Ours came the same, just slightly different days. We still had to do a tip run.

Sorry, but tough. Generate less rubbish if you don't want the "pita".

I don't know where people think all these extra lorries and crews are going to come from for the one or two extra Christmas collections. Councils don't keep surplus bin lorries in storage in case. You can't just press a button and "increase service capacity".

Pineapplewaves · 07/01/2026 20:25

So the bin men aren’t allowed to celebrate Christmas with their families? Would you be willing to give up some of your time off and go into work?

Christmas has not lasted 3.5 weeks though - have you asked the council why your bins haven’t been emptied in all that time? Our bin men had Christmas Day, Boxing Day, New Year’s Day and the Friday following New Year’s Day off but they got paid overtime to work Saturday and Sunday instead so everyone’s bins still got emptied once per week as normal.

BadgernTheGarden · 07/01/2026 20:25

Do you want to pay for extra collections? The guys (or girls) don't work for free.

Well obviously.

But simply saying that isn't going to solve anything. Meanwhile, the rubbish piles up.

How about you take your stuff to the dump??

Obviously they do, because it's a problem every year. Denying it happens doesn't resolve this.

I'm in flats too, and I understand

However, I think the real issue is that we don't have proper weekly bin collections any more. It's mad.

I don't. I haven't even taken my swing kitchen bin out since the 22nd of December. I have bokashi compost caddy which goes into my garden and some cardboard and glass recycling which is collected weekly.

If it is so obvious, why don’t people do it then?
