to be worried about getting coil fitted?

Imalittleworried · 07/01/2026 15:12

I have suggested to Gp last months that I have heard about hormonal coil being helpful for heavy periods.
He agreed that yes that’s right but as he doesn’t deal with it, i was told the gp who fits it, will arrange an appointment.
I have been given a leaflet on the coil to read.
I have just been given an appointment to get it fitted.
Is this the normal procedure? I mean do they not have to check if i’m suitable for it.
The local sec clinic who i was told can also fit if it’s too long of a wait, has told me they would not help as if we are trying to get it done for the purpose of helping periods, gp should rule out any other problems, so should be referred to gynaecologists.
Am i overreacting or is getting a coil not such a big deal and gp is not being careless??

I'm on my second mirena, one before children and one after, both insertions and one removal entailed nothing more than mild discomfort. I still have periods albeit light and without cramps so I'm not complaining. When this one's due for removal it'll be a straight swap all being well.

Sunshineandgrapefruit · 09/01/2026 18:26

If you have had kids it shouldn't be painful, the bleeding will probably be a real pain it can take anywhere from 3 months to a year to settle. Hormone wise it should be fine.

Imalittleworried · 09/01/2026 18:46

My friend has also had children and I know she has a fairly high pain threshold and she had to stop the gp as it was so painful. She had such a bad experience she is now going private to be put to sleep 🤷‍♀️

I don’t want to dash your hopes but mine made my heavy bleeding even worse!! Literally the worst year of my life and the Dr just kept saying “it will settle down”……it didn’t, I ended up in A&E one night passing blood clots (and the coil)

AllTheChatsAboutTea · 09/01/2026 20:02

I had a Mirena coil fitted (aged 46) for heavy periods, having tried tranexamic acid tablets. A scan showed uterine fibroids.

The procedure was uncomfortable rather than painful. Lots of deep breathing helped. Take paracetamol beforehand.

In the week after I had some cramping and my breasts felt very tender but that soon settled. I’ve not had a period in 5 years and have no side effects.

Ilikeviognier · 09/01/2026 20:17

Sorry - horror story incoming. I had a copper coil fitted and a few hours later, had labour type contractions. Went to an and e and they couldn’t find it…. An x ray showed that it had perforated my uterus and was hanging out in my abdomen!

I had to have it removed via keyhole surgery.

admitedly not common I assume!

Hammy19 · 09/01/2026 20:17

I felt a small scratch and then was amazed when she said it was done, might say more about me than the actual procedure though 😂worst bit was an evening of cramps

My PMT hasn't gotten any worse but peri menopause had already turned me into a psycho so that ship had already sailed

It also didn't make my periods any lighter but they were already pretty light and short anyway

I had a gynaflex fitted before my mirena and it had the same effect of your experience. Obviously depends which type you have

Ihaveaskedyouthrice · 09/01/2026 21:35

I had a mirena fitted 15 months ago. Not wanting to put anyone off but I found the fitting extremely painful (absolutely nothing like a smear despite what everyone says) and fainted during it.
Initial 3 months I seriously regretted getting it as the bleeding was constant, I literally bled(not spotting , bleeding)every day from start October until end January. Had an appointment made to have it taken out and the bleeding just stopped. I now have about three days a month of extremely light spotting.

DryJanuaryWhosWithMe · 08/01/2026 08:59

It’s just like having a smear, nothing more, nothing less.

Once in, you don’t feel it.

I haven’t had a period since 2011.

Same here on both counts except my last period was 2015. The copper coil made me bleed constantly. Slight discomfort for fitting and removing but no worse than a smear and I've now had several fitted. So it can't have been that bad :)

Allswellthatendswelll · 09/01/2026 21:45

Positive story:

I had one last year. Made a GP appointment to talk it through then she put me on the list. Got it fitted by the GP. Mild discomfort as in I had to squeeze the nurses hand for about 30 seconds and do some breathing. I've had two kids but they were c sections so it wasn't like my cervix had ever fully opened. Felt slightly crampy that day.

I had a headache for two weeks and then that went and some light bleeding on and off for about six months and now nothing. I used to feel shit for a week each month and now I get very mild pms to the point where I'm not even sure it's PMS. It's been great!

Superstar22 · 09/01/2026 21:53

I have had numerous operations for c sections, broken bones, various things. I am not scared of a bit of pain. Very pragmatic,
Fitting it was very painful, taking it out was not (years later). That was akin to a smear. Which I think nothing about.

i would honestly suggest taking plenty of pain relief and booking off the rest of the day. I would describe it as something that could sensibly be offered under GA. I was in tears later in the day. It was wild how much it hurt & how nonchalantly people talk about it. However, that awful day wouldn’t put me off it’s been great and I’ve had no problems (on second coil and due for a third soon)

Imalittleworried · 09/01/2026 22:46

Thanks everyone i will take plenty of painkillers. I guess i won’t know how it will affect me until i try it and one thing i know is that im prepared to risk if there is a chance my period gets lighter or even stop. I’m sick of my life revolving around my time of the months

It was a mirena

Imalittleworried · 26/01/2026 18:21

Thanks everyone. How long did everyone bleed after having the coil fitted if any?

I had random bleeding on and off for about 6 months before my periods stopped completely. I had the mirena coil. My dr did say it would take a few months to settle down as she put it.

11 months until the damn thing fell out!

Gosh that sounds awful. Did you get another one?

OP posts:
ArtfulTaupeGoose · 26/01/2026 22:20

I've had mirena coils twice. Both times it was uncomfortable but not the agony I expected. I haven't given birth so thought it would be worse.
Bleeding stopped after a month the first time, and a few days the second.

thatsthatsaidthemayor · 26/01/2026 22:23

I hesitated for years because of horror stories. It’s fixed all off my problems. Was a dream to fit. Wish I’d had it done sooner.

Gawd no, won’t even have one for HRT purposes it was so bad. I got my fibroids treated to get to the root cause of the issue!

CaffeineAndChords · 26/01/2026 22:28

Obviously you’re going to be anxious but I had a mirena coil fitted in 2018 and had it removed end of last year and can truthfully say it was so easy and straight forward.
With all due respect if you have four children there’s absolutely nothing to worry about having a coil fitted!

Imalittleworried · 27/01/2026 06:28

Thanks everyone i have had it fitted. It wasn’t a complete smooth process and pain free but glad it’s done. Hopefully ill get the results i want 🤞

Hi Op I had the coil fitted last November it helped me with my heavy periods and helps along with my HRT I’m 39 years old and suffered with really heavy periods at the moment I’ve not yet had a period since Jan and the one I did have was very light lasted just over a week so I’m not sure if I’m one of the lucky ones to not now have a period the fitting didn’t hurt me or any pain after but I don’t know whether that’s because I’ve had children.
The doctor told me it takes min of 6 months for your body to settle with the coil and adjust still early days but sounds like it’s normal.
I didn’t have the copper coil had that in the past and it was awful for me.
