Gift for GP practice

Bumbelinaaa · 06/01/2026 11:37

Probably shouldn’t be in AIBU, but I’m posting for traffic! During a recent emergency consultation my GP went above and beyond to care for me and prioritised a referral on Christmas Eve, that will be life changing for me. Therefore, I would like to buy a token gift as a thank you. I will be separately sending him a card explaining how much his actions meant to me, but I understand that there are rules around gifting, so it will probably have to be a generic gift to share with the entire practice (fine with me! I know it’s a team effort!).

So… please could anybody who works with a GP practice advise me what would be the best kind of gift? Would it be a biscuit box selection? Chocolate selection? Ideally I want to spend £20 - £30 and that seems like excessive amount of biscuits 😂

Would a gift card for the local supermarket for them to buy treats be breaking the rules?

Thanks in advance!

I'm not certain but having worked in public service, I think they would have to decline vouchers/gift cards, as they would with cash. Small gifts with low value are normally ok (£20-30 is fine I think), but in your shoes I think I would stick to a nice handwritten card and something small, even handmade if you are crafty? Like homemade biscuits or a handmade fabric bookmark etc?

A card saying thank you and why can be used by the GP as patient feedback for their professional revalidation. People often forget to give compliments and say thanks, and it really is appreciated

MsGreying · 06/01/2026 11:57

Flowers. Everyone can enjoy them or he can take them home.

Freda69 · 06/01/2026 11:59

I once wrote a thank you letter to a GP for referring my husband for a very much needed angiogram (urgent triple bypass necessary!). When I saw her later she said she was really pleased to get a thank you as they’re pretty rare!

StrawberrySquash · 06/01/2026 12:01

Add a fruit basket to the biscuits?

Fingalscave · 06/01/2026 12:01

When my mum's GP practice went above and beyond in her final illness, I sent a flower arrangement and a thank you card. They were very touched and appreciated the gesture. I was just so grateful for their kindness.

StrawberrySquash · 06/01/2026 12:09

Or get the really fancy Fortnum's ones. Everyone says they are very good. You can get a cardboard refill box rather than the tin. https://www.fortnumandmason.com/mochalossus-biscuits-600g

I would just get the nicest box of biscuits you can, and don’t worry about spending a certain amount.

Hellzbellz25 · 06/01/2026 12:17

i work in a gp practice, the gp would apprecita a handwritten thank you card the most and maybe a nice box of biscuits for reception? I wouldn’t bother spending £20, we are like vultures here and they would be gobbled in an afternoon lol

Not the healthiest message for a gp surgery, especially as lots of people try cutting back on sweet stuff after xmas. Flowers and a fruit basket much nicer idea but yes mostcertainly to a nice card and or letter.

I was thinking this, or Betty's of Harrogate

PollyPlumPeach · 06/01/2026 13:14

They aren't allowed to accept anything of more than a token monetary value, so there's no point considering gift cards or anything like that. Can't keep flowers because of infection control.

Best thing you can do is just write a nice letter outlining how the GP went above and beyond for you, and expressing your thanks. Doctors normally only get feedback from patients when things have gone wrong and they want to make a complaint. A nice detailed compliment letter will be useful for them in their annual appraisal and they will be much more grateful for this than yet another generic chocolate box which will just get snaffled by the reception staff.

I promise you that when the GPs are still working at 8pm, they will want the biscuits. They will also likely be shared with the rest of the surgery, so a couple of biscuits isn’t going to derail anyone’s ‘cutting back’.

One of the kindest gifts I ever received from a patient was a handmade card, thanking me for what I had done and what it meant to them.
Words of appreciation go a long way - and so do biscuits! 😊
As someone said earlier, they can only accept a token gift, so something small and of a low monetary value will be lovely.

Tin of shortbread or biscuits for staff at surgery goes down well.

Violetmouse · 06/01/2026 13:29

As someone who has coeliac disease and works in a GP surgery, I love it when people give chocolates rather than amazing looking biscuits that are full of gluten! So maybe some biscuits but also some chocolate that's gluten free and dairy free?
The card is the biggest thing though, it absolutely means the world to hear you've made a positive difference to someone, it's why we do the job.

Hayleybail · 06/01/2026 13:32

The best gifts we have were chocolates, biscuits and coffee!!!! Add a Google review.

LetMeStayInBed · 06/01/2026 13:32

I work in a medical centre. Biscuits are always appreciated. Recently a patient sent us a box of French fancies from Betty’s tea room. Amazing. Mostly though the doctor would appreciate a card or letter. You could also send your thoughts to the practice manager as there is a log of compliments.

youarebeingsoextrarightnow · 06/01/2026 13:52

a card and some flowers maybe box chocs too, any gifts would need to be declared I suspect, especially gift vouchers

Isekaied · 06/01/2026 13:54

MsGreying · 06/01/2026 11:57

I'm sure she'd love them.

stickmanohstickman · 06/01/2026 13:57

I’d go for biscuits and maybe some posh tea bags/coffee to go with them

roundaboutthehillsareshining · 06/01/2026 13:59

How about a Deliveroo or similar gift card, so they can order in a round of coffees or some food? When I was public facing, we used to love getting a card so we could all order something when the day had been really bad.

Chainy · 06/01/2026 20:09

Coffee or a crate of soft drinks
