Home IPL on 12 year old?

My daughter has really hairy legs - dark hair on pale skin... she even has hairy toes. She would like the hair removed before a big summer holiday. She is 12 going on 13 atm. We have talked about this and I am confident this is HER choice.

I have a home IPL machine. It's done my legs with no damage and no regrowth. I just read that you should not use IPL - either at home or in salons - on under 18s. Just wondered why?

Happy to use an alternative method if needed - just thought IPL was pretty painless and more long term....

Any thoughts on why IPL can't be used under 18? Has anyone broken this rule and had bad/good results?

From google

  • Key Age Considerations
  • Under 18 (Teens):
  • Hormonal Fluctuations: Puberty causes hormonal changes that can make hair growth unpredictable, potentially requiring more sessions or yielding temporary results.
  • Parental Consent: Most clinics require written parental/guardian consent and sometimes require the parent to be present.
  • Effectiveness: Treatments may be less permanent until hormones regulate, usually around late teens.

I love my Lumea and found it really effective - genuinely one of my best investments but I wouldn't use it on a teen. Their skin is still more delicate, hormones are going crazy and it's just not worth the risk.

I would either get her into a good shaving routine, with shaving cream, exfoliating and moisturising. I'm not sure if salons would wax a young teen but I'd be happier with waxing than IPL

I understand about hormones causing growth fluctuations - but that's not really a problem if we are doing it at home - no extra cost.

I don't want her shaving - I remember doing that as a teen and having stubble after 2 days and itchy bumps and nicks.

I think waxing would be too painful and I can't imagine she would enjoy a salon trip (she's quite shy).

To me, shaving and waxing seem more damaging than IPL.... so maybe cream is the only option.

I'm still not convinced by the arguments not to! (but obvs wouldn't put DD in any danger).

I’ve got a Lumea and have been using it on my daughter since she was 12 with no concerns. She has a lip wax then uses it afterwards and it’s helped reduce regrowth. We’ve said we’ll fund laser treatment as soon as she’s old enough. The beauticians I spoke to said the advice is as there’s no data in under 16’s so it errs on the side of caution.
