After school nanny pay rate

We’re looking to hire an after school nanny for a couple of nights each week (5-6 hours in total). The person we’re keen on is 21 and a graduate, with some experience of childcare. What would you offer as an hourly rate? We’re in the North and I don’t want to be stingy but also have to keep the pennies in mind. What do you pay?

I pay £15 p/h for a similar candidate, outer London suburbs

I’d want to pay over minimum wage.

We pay £20 an hour. Good, part-time afterschool care is like finding a unicorn IMHO!! Ours is mid-60’s, so like a grandma. She cooks for our DC, plays games and supervises homework. She’s an angel.

I would say £15 per hour is fair.
Did you ask her salary expectations?
Out of interest what is she doing the rest of the time?

Didimum · 05/01/2026 20:39

We pay £15 per hour, plus mileage.

You would need to employ them if they were a nanny, and £20 an hour.

Great, thank you. I’m going to propose £15 per hour based on that.

Remember that you also need to pay employers NI on top of their wages because you are their employer. You also need to provide them a pay slip so you may want to budget for a payroll company. And you either need to give them paid holiday or roll holiday pay into wages.

unlikelychump · 05/01/2026 22:42

We pay 14 an hour. Not enough wage to require hmrc registration. Will put it up once she is settled in.

With great difficulty.

On a serious note - there are agencies, or you can advertise on local community forums or message boards.

Applicants tend to be TAs who want extra income or students who can make 4 hours a day-ish work round their studies or people who are retired. Career nannies tend to prefer full time roles.
