Junk food at school

I thankfully send my 7 yo with a packed lunch which he asks for but am getting really pissed off with special days at school like today for example we have an email titled ‘Nugget day’ and it’s a menu for a weeks time when they’ll have chicken nuggets, chips and beans and chocolate cake for dessert. WTF? Friday’s are already fish fingers and chips day so why do they do this? Surely a day of promoting different foods from around the world or new fruit and veg they may not have tried. What is this teaching our kids? My husband wants to email the school!

Hmm no it’s ok I’m happy to carry on feeling how I do about it! I’m not blaming the school, I wanted to know why they thought it was a good idea and just because of the census bollocks, doesn’t mean I now think it’s a good idea!

He used to be school dinners and asked not to be! He’s a wilful child so I couldn’t force him either way trust me!

i mean, the op has also said that on other days next week the kids will be given chocolate biscuits and ice cream so it sounds like a general issue at the school.

if schools have so little money why don’t they eliminate pudding entirely? instead of normalising pudding as a habit.

even if they have half the sugar of a regular pudding as a PP said that’s still unnecessary and way too much for any child if they are having it every single day.

I agree! I was surprised they had a pudding but I’m not sure how big the lunch is!

The daftest thing really is that they police lunch boxes but the school lunch kids get fed shite. I say that with authority as i used to be a school dinner lady. Albeit about 8 years ago. I loved Turkey Twizzlers.

My kids menu for this week is tomato pasta, chicken fajitas wrap with couscous, roast chicken vegetables Yorkshire's gravy and roasties, cheese and potato pie with veg, and salmon fishcakes with chipped potatoes. Fancier than what I had 20 years ago lmao

it’s awful i agree Op. there is no excuse for having chocolate cake on any day at school let alone just randomly for no reason.

it also undermines the authority of schools who then preach about how they know what is best for children.

id be interested to hear how common this type of thing is across other schools.

The cakes and puddings at our school are made using healthier options, so reduced sugar but using dates for example or fruit juices. They are all made at school.

I can’t get hysterical about a bit of cake, the portions are not huge.

slashlover · 05/01/2026 14:56

Do you know if the nuggets are processed or not? You can make nuggets which are healthy, same with fish fingers. Chips aren't necessarily bad or unhealthy depending on how they're cooked etc.

Jellycatspyjamas · 05/01/2026 14:56

I wouldn’t worry, by the time they’re in high school you have no control over what they choose for lunch. Healthy food for the other meals in the day.

You may be right! Given i’m being pathetic apparently caring, given my son doesn’t eat it anyway I can’t be bothered to email the school to ask but it’s food for thought! (Excuse the pun!)

I’d better add a penguin bar and a pepperami to prevent this occurrence then!

It’s not a treat if it’s every day. it’s just a normalised unhealthy snack.

i don’t think many families would give apple crumble one day, pavlova the next etc , like a previous menu that was posted!

Schools should just do away with pudding entirely and put the money towards other parts of the menu.

If a parent really needs to give their kids sugar they can easily do it after school but i don’t see why schools need to push it directly.

I don't see how you can complain about food your child isn't going to eat. If other parents who do get dinners disapprove of nuggets then let them contact the school.

You all have a choice presumably. Even on nugget day they must do rolls and stuff also? But I don't think it's for you to complain about as it doesn't effect your child.
