DD’s ear piercings aren’t seeming to heal-AIBU to take them out?

Dd has had her ears pierced since September. They still bleed and scab daily and one earlobe feels thicker than the other. She’s devastated as we’re vigilant about cleaning them and always have been. AIBU to take them out permanently? I’ve tried all kinds of metals and different styles and backs and it hasn’t made any difference.

I have to have solid gold OP. Even sterling causes mine to go red and crack and then weep.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 05/01/2026 12:34

Like PPs, I'd echo that she might be allergic to the metal. I can only wear gold (though I haven't tried hypoallergenic) as silver or some white golds leaves my skin with bright red marks and the immediate area itches like anything! I seem to remember my ears getting crusty around the piercing holes. Mine is genetic, as my mother is the same.

Try swapping the earrings for different ones.

StasisMom · 05/01/2026 12:38

Swapping them is good and then dip the new ones in sudacrem and also put a splodge on the back as well.

dottiedodah · 05/01/2026 12:41

Gold is the only thing that doesnt make my ears sore and they were pierced over 40 years ago! Also hoop settings (with a bar type fixing)as well otherwise they swell up.(9 carat is fine)

OCDmama · 05/01/2026 12:41

Take out current earrings, give a good clean and put in gold studs (actual gold, not plated). Leave them in and aside from cleaning around, leave them alone.

They were done in a proper piercing place. No gun used. Interesting though as I thought the advoice would be to take them out! Her earrings are Sterling silver, what should I try if not these?

I can only tolerate gold.

myglowupera · 05/01/2026 12:46

This happened to my piercings when I first had them done when I was 11. They were very painful and a mess. My mum took them out and I had them redone when I was about 15 and no problems at all second time.

Before you do anything I would talk to a reputable piercer. They will give you the best advice about what to do next, whether that’s taking them out or trying a different metal.

FrostyFlo · 05/01/2026 12:48

How old is she ? Is she maybe twiddling with them a lot with not just washed hands and reintroducing infection .

zingally · 05/01/2026 12:49

I've had my second earlobe piercings for 20 years now, and they still play up.
I can go months and months with no issue, and then all of a sudden they throw a temper tantrum and get really sore and itchy out of nowhere.
The only thing that seems to sort it is to have a week or so completely earring-free, and then put brand new "never worn before" earrings in. They tend to do better with small hoops than studs. I imagine because that's less metal in direct contact with the skin.

ArticWillow · 05/01/2026 12:49

Titanium or surgical steel is probably best. Gold can be hit & miss and silver or any other metal that tends to corrode isn't suitable.

FuzzyWolf · 05/01/2026 12:51

Given they were only pierced in September and you say that you’ve tried all kinds of ones, I wonder if you haven’t really allowed her ears to properly heal and are then irritating them with all the different earrings.

I would find the ones used for piercing (should be implant grade titanium or possibly if lower quality, surgical steel) and go back to the studio. Speak to a professional there and I suspect your daughter needs titanium earrings in for a long time now to let them heal.

ronnip · 05/01/2026 12:54

I had this problem my whole life then I bought ardant earrings
They are ridiculously expensive for what they are but I've been wearing them every single day since I got them

Titanium or stainless steel. I have sensitive ears and cannot wear anything else.

Solace Jewellery have a good selection.

This.

I think the common mistake with piercings is thinking they'll be fully healed in six weeks and taking them out.

In many cases, healing does take a lot longer and it's wise to keep them in for as long as possible.

I had two failed goes at having my lobes pierced when younger, then tried again a few years ago. I was meticulous with cleaning them (just using salt water), not touching them and then, perhaps a bit overboard, but I left the original earrings on for a year.

Not had a single issue this time.

(Also had my tragus pierced a few months after the lobes - which I had also previously had pierced and had to have taken out - used the same process and again, no issues with it).

PangaBanga · 05/01/2026 13:06

Have you tried contacting the piercer? They should be able to identify the problem if your daughter goes in to see them.

Implant grade titanium from a piercing shop. Silver will permanently stain her ears.

Branleuse · 05/01/2026 13:08

You're likely doing way too much with them. They are only 4 months old. In my experience they heal best if you barely touch them.
Wash them when you have your shower, but don't overdo it.
People do way too much fiddling of piercings.

Oddities1 · 05/01/2026 13:10

Like a pp said stop 'cleaning' them. Let soapy water run over them in the shower otherwise leave them alone! Best and quickest healing ear piercings I've ever had are when I've just left them. No need to dab, poke, twist. Leave alone

Lostinthewoods8 · 05/01/2026 13:12

My daughter's ears whilst healing would bleed with sterling silver, she has had to wear gold, whilst they healed, unfortunately I'm the same and can only wear silver once they have fully healed, I'm even allergic to surgical steel. I'd try gold if you haven't already, but not gold plated has to be proper gold

Allmarbleslost · 05/01/2026 13:14

She just needs to leave them alone. Stop changing earrings, keep hands away from them and stop cleaning every day.

TeaRoseTallulah · 05/01/2026 13:15

Salt water in an egg cup and dip her lobe in daily and leave alone to heal,it's early days. Sounds like you are using way too many things and causing irritation.

APurpleSquirrel · 05/01/2026 13:20

This happened with my DD. She had them pierced at the beginning of the summer holidays in 2023 & kept them clean etc. But by the following Jan one live still wasn’t healing properly & felt thicker. We went back to our piercer - she removed the existing titanium labret & put in a new sterile one & the lobe eventually healed properly.
If you been to a reputable piercer they should willingly see you & sort it out.

pinkponie · 05/01/2026 14:06

By leaving them alone, do I still put the earrings in?

Dartmoorcheffy · 05/01/2026 14:10

Are you taking the earrings out? Are they clean when they are going back in?

What earrings does she have in now?
what earrings did she have in when they were pierced?
