To ask how many clothes that you own?

AyUpLass · 04/01/2026 21:46

I have so many - triple wardrobe at home with shelves full too (poor DP is in the airing cupboard!) and at my mums I still have a double wardrobe, a chest of drawers, 3 storage boxes of clothes on top of her wardrobe and part of her wardrobe too! Along with some (not many) in my attic.

its insane, I often think if I was to up and leave for any reason what the hell would I do with them all.

do you have many?

Not enough frankly. I am not bothered by clothes really. I have a single wardrobe, of both summer and winter. A few drawers and shelves for jumpers, jeans and underwear. I still cull every season though. I have had things so long they wear out. And then I have to do emergency shops!

Terrible really. I like having nice things, individual items are not cheap, I buy mid range, but the interest is just not there.

Mikart · 05/01/2026 09:14

I have no " smart " clothes as am retired and live in gym/ walking gear. I don't attend weddings or parties which require me to dress up. It would make me anxious to have so many clothes as OP. I am very minimalistic.

RavenPie · 05/01/2026 09:20

Too many. I’ve got a rail about 90-100cm which is full without being rammed - a shelf above and below and 3 drawers plus and extra unit with pjs and sweatshirts plus quite a few coats and some dresses i never wear in a different wardrobe. I wear about 10% of them. I’ve never really had clothes I like. I’m not very interested and tend to swing about to different styles but they don’t take and wear I to death a few things and ignore others. I keep things I’ll probably never wear “just in case” like I have a “perfectly good” navy suit I bought when I was career changing about 10 years ago specifically to wear to interviews but it’s really dated and while it fits me now it hasn’t for about 6 of the years I’ve had it. If I was going to an interview now I probably wouldn’t wear it but every time I nearly chuck it I think “but it’s my only smart outfit” and it goes back in. I really need to dump a lot (most) and go a bit more “capsule wardrobe” with fewer but better quality things but I am in an enforced “no spend” situation rn.

VeterinaryCareAssistant · 05/01/2026 09:24

3 dresses
3 jumpers
2 cardigans
2 pairs of leggings
2 sets of work uniform
2 coats
3 pairs of boots
2 pairs of trainers
1 pair of wellies
Underwear
1 scarf
1 hat

Other than the coats and footwear it all fits in 4 drawers of a chest of drawers.

selfcentred · 05/01/2026 09:27

One triple wardrobe of currently wearable clothes. I hand absolutely everything- shirts, jumpers, everything.
Plus half a wardrobe of high summer clothes put away to rotate in

MadamCholetsbonnet · 05/01/2026 09:30

What percentage of this do you actually wear? You could probably have a very nice holiday on the proceeds of Vinting at least half of it.

SilverPink · 05/01/2026 09:33

I have a big double wardrobe and chest of drawers, but I do wear everything. I only really buy second hand and I’m always clearing out if I haven’t worn something for a while.
Honestly, the stuff at your mums and in the attic - get rid. You’re quite clearly not wearing them!

JaceLancs · 05/01/2026 09:34

Far too many eg 50+ jumpers
Double wardrobe and shelves in my bedroom plus drawers for underwear
Spare room double wardrobe stores out of season clothing
I also have 4 shoe racks
Getting better about culling though as I’m dieting and keep taking stuff to charity shop
When I put away my winter clothes I will take the opportunity to assess what’s not been worn and why
I need to get back to selling stuff on eBay too as that was always a good incentive to declutter

cupfinalchaos · 05/01/2026 09:35

I don’t know but have a large dressing room so keep things I would/should throw away.

AyUpLass · 05/01/2026 13:20

Honestly my wardrobes are packed and I probably wear the same 5-10 tops, the same black leggings (I must have 50 size M primark leggings) and the same 2-3 pairs of jeans. I have SO MANY sparkly dresses, a whole wardrobe of sparkly clothes - Christmas has just been and not once did I wear a sparkly top! I’m a stay at home mum, if me and DP go for a meal it’s not really anywhere I would wear sequins! When my eldest is back at school this week I’m going to sort that one out and put them in a suitcase in the attic. I also have about 100 vest tops, I can narrow them down. I think I will have a good Vinted sale!

1 large chest of drawers,

  • one drawer undies & socks,
  • one drawer summer tops,
  • one drawer winter tops & sweaters,
  • one drawer jeans/skirts

1 single wardrobe, coats, jackets, dresses, evening wear
Sports kit in a drawer under the bed.

I need a good clear out

Why not sell all the evening wear?

wombat1a · 05/01/2026 13:53

Day wear:
3x jeans
8x T-shirts (too many really only wear 5 of them)
5x work shirts
1x mini-skirt
1x summer dress
1x jacket
1x coat
2x scarves
2x hats (1 baseball and 1 straw)
socks/bras/underwear

Sports wear:
3x cycling shorts
3x cycling tops
3x leggings
3x workout tops

Didimum · 05/01/2026 14:02

Three rails. One large shelf and two drawers. Plus small underwear and socks drawer. Have one more shelf that’s just sentimental clothes that I don’t wear.

I don’t think it matters how big or small one’s clothes collection is as long as it brings someone joy (and isn’t getting someone in debt!).

I’d get rid of most of the sparkly wear, you’re unlikely to ever wear more than one or two things again. Keep a handful of decent leggings and ditch the rest. You can guarantee anything that goes in the attic won’t be coming back down again! It’s generally out of sight out of mind up there!

Otterinthewater · 05/01/2026 14:23

We live minimally. I don’t like piles and piles of stuff junking up my life. I live in jumpsuits so I have 4 in different colours, a few tops, jumpers and cardigans, and 5 dresses for work/going out. I own two pairs of tights because they wash and dry quickly, and 7 pairs of pants and socks, one for each day of the week. One spring/summer coat and one autumn/winter. One of each trainers, crocs, winter boots, and wellies. One hat, scarf and pair of gloves. Two sleep shirts… Can’t think of anything else…

X123x321X · 05/01/2026 14:38

I dress the same all the time, so I don't need a lot of clothes. Everything I have gets worn a lot, like my tweed jackets which last for many years. I have two pairs of shoes.

LibertyLily · 05/01/2026 14:42

1m wide wardrobe with one rail containing -
7 x coats/jackets
6 x dresses
4 x skirts
2 x pairs jeans
2 x pairs summer trousers

Tall, narrow chest of drawers containing -
5 x pairs leggings
16 x jumpers/cardigans
10 x t-shirts
4 x other tops
3 x pairs PJs
2 x woolly hats
6 x pairs fingerless gloves
2 x scarves
3 x bras
4 x pairs socks
6 x pairs woolly tights
20 x pairs knickers

Plus -
14 x pairs shoes/boots/sandals etc

Lots of my clothes are pretty ancient (not including the deliberately vintage items!) - on Saturday I wore a skirt I've had for 22 years and one of my coats is a bit older.

DH has far more clothes and shoes than me!

Ithinkihatethislittlelife · 05/01/2026 14:51

Three pairs of tracksuit bottoms (one just for the house at they have holes in), two pairs of leggings, 6 t shirts, 2 cardigans and one pair of trainers. A few pairs of underwear and socks and one bra.

Very specific I know and it gets me down. I haven’t got much money and actually, all I do is the school run, walk the dog and go on endless hospital appointments. But I always look scruffy and it’s not nice.

WongKarWaiMe · 05/01/2026 15:02

Two chest of drawers and a double wardrobe's worth. I did have a lot more, but I'm trying to buy less and be more intentional, and I donated a lot of stuff that no longer fits or doesn't look good on me.

In our local area we have a clothes bank, exactly the same as a food bank, where people donate clothes, you may have something similar? Also, Timpsons (lock smiths company but also dry cleaning and other stuff) offer services dependent on area, such as dry cleaning or even supplying clothes for job interviews etc. With WLI, I’ve found a lot of people are selling off bundles on vinted/ebay which work out as better value as you get lots more for less postage. If you can spare a few pounds over some weeks to make up a tenner for example you may be able to pick a really good bundle up, especially if you look for eBay auctions ending at stupid o clock! If you spend some time looking and search using spelling mistakes such as “bundel” you can usually pick up some total bargains for very little money, although I recognise it can be hard prioritising even a tenner with cost of living these days. I hope things pick up for you.

Oioiqueen · 05/01/2026 16:01

Honestly not many, tend to wear and replace clothes rather than add to them. I've got a 2 over 3 chest of drawers and half a double wardrobe. I've got a small plastic box under our bed with some shorts in and that's it.

I will no longer own anyone’s unwanted seconds. I’ve spent a long time with my only “choice” being other people’s charity shop cast offs.

I know some people like that - but I’ve had enough of it.

(Thank you, by the way, I know you are making good suggestions. But my self esteem is in the toilet after years of wearing crap that someone else didn’t want just because it was cheap and it fitted me. It makes me feel horrible).

goldenhunter · 05/01/2026 16:09

I have loads. About 7 full work out sets. 3 sets of joggers and hoodies. 3 fleece gilets and 3 quarter zip fleeces. 12 long sleeve tops, and about the same short sleeve. 5 over sized t shirts. About 20 knitwear items (jumpers and cardigans). 10 dresses. 5 skirts. 7 jackets, and about 5 coats. I wear all of it! Love clothes!!

Not much. A small wardrobe. Two drawers. That's everything including underwear and pyjamas, not including coats (I own four coats/jackets.) DH is like you and has mountains of crap, so there's no space for me unless I want our house to be drowned. I resent him hugely for it!

Edited

I realised I resented my DH too after I had a breakdwon. Hes a hoarder so basically I stopped buying anything at all becasue I was so overwhelmed by the house. I lost absolutely everything in the breakdwon - every single thing and only wish id addressed these issues. id worked so hard to get what I had.
