Are roads and pavements near you gritted?

It's absolutely Baltic out and for some reason the roads near me haven't been gritted at all. Cars sliding around everywhere. It's literally like an ice rink. They were gritted really thoroughly last year. Not one gritted road in sight. What's even worse is that the pavements aren't gritted either so everyone is walking on the roads where the tyres have melted the ice (where they can!). There's a video going round of two people on their hands and knees going backwards down a hill on the pavement as it's too icy to walk. Madness!

Are your roads gritted?

Yes, I live on a particular bad hil, and the hill is always gritter prior to any freeze.

I went out earlier and saw the grit already down and as well saw the gritters out in action.

Your council is responsible; get onto them if the place is perilous

No. But some dickhead on my street thought it would be a great idea to wash his car and allow the water to run off his drive, across the pavement and down the road thus making the perfect ice slide.

Clychaugog · 04/01/2026 17:31

Yep. Saw gritters gritting every time I left the house today.

Gretchener · 04/01/2026 17:32

Really bad round here and in Warwickshire. Gritting seems to have been scratched off the 'to-do' list!!

Silverbirchleaf · 04/01/2026 17:32

Yes, along main routes.

Nincompoo · 04/01/2026 17:34

My town is very hilly and the main bus routes have been gritted but the side roads are carnage. Our council in their absolute wisdom have removed all the grit bins so lots of people are completely stranded in their homes.

Toastythesnowman · 04/01/2026 17:39

No, I've been out for a run and it's already very slippy. School run is going to be dicey tomorrow.

Sharpzebra · 04/01/2026 17:41

No I live down the bottom of a hill and no grit vans down here

Pavements: No, except where householders or businesses or community groups have done outside their frontages.

Roads: Yes, but over Friday night / early Saturday, the gritters started their gritting, then rain came, then it froze and the snow came, so there have been a lot of people moaning on Facebook saying they hadn't been out, when they had. Saturday night / early Sunday the grit has been a lot more effective. Obviously, they focus on main roads, so not all side roads have been done, except bus routes and ambulance routes into hospitals etc.

No. South Devon. A development at the bottom of a main road. Main road is closed just past the development so hasn’t been gritted whilst the road is closed.
