Leave home 5-10 mins earlier due to work ice

From my experience driving in freezing conditions, more drivers are just removing about a quarter of their windscreens. Just looks like a porthole. Or when it snows, not brushing off the snow from roof

People need to leave at least 5 minutes earlier to scrape all the ice and snow off, wait until the inside of windscreen is defogged. Then drive off.

Remember driving in 8 inches of snow and so many drivers didn’t brush off the snow from roofs. They stopped at traffic lights and the braking caused the snow fall onto the windscreen. This needs to be removed manually as you can cause damage to the wiper motor.

Thanks Dad 🙄 Anything else we need to know?

Yeah.

Turn your wipers off before you turn of the ignition so they are in their "stop" position.

If they're frozen to the windscreen when you next start the engine they could be damaged.

You're welcome.

I get bloody caught out by this often and just accept I may be late for work (although that’s very rare as I tend to give myself a 10 minute natural buffer anyway).
I know you’re not meant to let the car idle but if it’s on my drive I’ll go and switch it on to start demisting the windscreen while I get my lunch out of the fridge, fill up my water bottle and get my coat. Then I go outside and scrape the windscreen. It takes ages to demist on the inside though 😭

Thank you! For many, common sense but as you and many of
us have observed, for some not!

I give myself much extra time in adverse conditions, makes for a pleasant and safe journey!

My car is parked in the allotted space for my home. So it’s like a driveway

It's true op

A pedestrian was killed by someone they just didn't see doing exactly this

Buy a cover for your windscreen. Then you don’t even need to defrost.

Catza · 04/01/2026 09:44

Were you the same person who posted about this yesterday? Surely, one post is enough.

UniquePinkSwan · 04/01/2026 09:45

I just defrost my car from the comfort of my home before going out. It’s bliss

Rustymoo01 · 04/01/2026 10:05

Heated windscreens are your friend!

I actually do have a cover for
my windscreen. I have been using it for a couple of months now. It has changed my life!

I bought one of these covers and it froze to my windscreen. I was worried that I was going to crack the windscreen on removing it

It takes me longer than 5 mins to de-ice and de-snow, and also then allow for a slower driving time.

I know this!

But never remember 😩

The thread title doesn't make sense. "Leave home 5 to 10 minutes earlier due to work ice."

I think what you @annoyingfeet mean is that people should allow themselves 5/10 minutes more to make sure their car is roadworthy, before setting off for work, when there is ice and snow.

Your post implies the ice and snow is at work rather than at home.

Mine is already on ready for the morning! Quick squirt of de-icer on the other windows and lights and I’m off! Meanwhile neighbours still scraping away on theirs….
