What has happened to chocolate?

I haven’t eaten popular brands of chocolate for years because they all started adding palm oil to their ingredients, but I still missed the unique taste of Cadbury’s and Milky Bar.

Anyway this Christmas someone gave us a box of Quality Street and I decided to eat one - the green triangle - but it tasted absolutely rank!
And today I noticed a bar of Milky Bar doesn’t have palm oil (maybe changed) so I thought I’d treat myself to memory lane. It’s disgusting. Not that yummy moreish flavour of years ago. Or have my taste buds changed?

YABU - it still tastes the same
YANBU - chocolate is not what it used to be and is full of cheap ingredients

My favourite chocolate are Lindt bars or Toblerone. Ritter is good too. But I long for that old Cadbury’s taste of my childhood.

That taste is long gone. No Cadburys tastes like Cadburys anymore 😔

ItsStillWork · 02/01/2026 19:40

laderache (can’t spell the bloody thing) is really nice chocolate.

they have a website in the UK and a new store in the Trafford Centre.

its very expensive, it’s weighed by the gram so 100g is £10

I don't like oranhe chocolate but always loved Terry's chocolate orange but a few years back I had one and it was genuinely disgusting. I looked it up and they'd changed the recipe to have less actual cocoa.
I still like Toblerone and milky way stars but that's pretty much it. To be fair I've never liked Cadbury always thought it was grossly sweet and oily but then I didn't grow up in Britain and prefer what we could get back home.

justasking111 · 02/01/2026 20:11

Co-op sell fair trade chocolate bars. I occasionally treat myself.

RedRiverShore6 · 02/01/2026 20:14

Rittersport is quite nice and not too expensive

I also had one segment of a chocolate orange, toffee flavoured. Inedible.
I remember excitedly trying Hershey's when I went to the US. It was vile. I was so disappointed.

Most chocolate these days tastes of sadness. I like the aldi moser roth bars to make hot chocolate with. Diary milk used to be lovely 20 odd years ago and is grim now. I can't do Tony's, as the segments are all uneven shapes and something luxurious shouldn't be called lonely. I also hated their stunt a few years ago where the advent calendar had a missing day to highlight global inequality. Not like a.xhild has any influence on hlobal politics, but would be highly disappointed! Even hotel chocolat seems to be less good these days, although I religiously buy a Wingston the bat at Halloween.

Dontpokethebearnow · 02/01/2026 20:48

I had this horror happen to me this Christmas too! Stopped eating Cadburys, Nestle and almost any other chocolate except Tony's (which whilst not top quality at least it actually melts when you eat it instead of going lumpy in your mouth)
We were given some QS and I love the triangles - I almost spat it out and the rest have been rejected.

Aldi do a lovely chocolate that doesn't taste or feel waxy/oily called Moser Roth and definitely worth trying!

I actually love Maltesers but even that chocolate has gone to pot now!

I totally agree, it tastes like sadness and wasted calories.

I wonder if we could get the original Cadbury’s recipe and replicate it. I’d be up for trying.

Do you think the chocolate companies are seeing a downturn in profits from all their rubbish recipe changes? I don’t know anyone personally this year who bought chocolate tubs at Xmas. We even gave some chocolate away as it was greasy tasting.

I found the Aldi Choceur is actually very nice, especially fruit and nut and they’re palm oil free. Their fake penguin bars are also still chocolate unlike penguins which are now ‘chocolate flavoured’.

I don't rate Tony’s at all. Must be a preference but tastes like really cheap 90s newsagent chocolate to me with a steep price tag.

Bones101 · 03/01/2026 01:45

Got a Cadburys golden crisps, mint crisp and the fruit and nut and nearly got sick it was vile. Least it's helping me with my chocolate addiction I guess lol

Ireolu · 03/01/2026 02:53

We now save our pennies for laderarch. YANBU

RyanFudgingMurphy · 03/01/2026 02:58

Most chocolate is waxy and lacks flavour now. If I’m feeling rich I do love Hotel Chocolat and Waitrose chocolate. Sainsbury’s own posh chocolate is nice too, though I think there is some palm oil. Generally though, if I’m on The Continent, I will go into a supermarket and buy up loads of chocolate to take home (I smuggle, not proud).

RedRiverShore6 · 03/01/2026 06:12

I don't like Tony's much, probably mainly because it is difficult and messy to eat with the thick silly shaped bar.

I bought quite a bit of the more expensive chocolates in the sale to see me through for a bit.

Are you pregnant

I see where you're coming from, cos everything tasted vile when I was pregnant. But the chocolate thing is everywhere, everyone is noticing the changes.

I'm not

I'm not

Lucky! The chocolate companies are changing things to "chocolate flavour" because of the reduced cocoa in their new recipes, so there's 100% changes. I wish I wasn't noticing the change in flavour, although I'm definitely eating less so maybe it's a good thing.

I remember hearing that in the US, Hershey’s has a vomitty taste, which begs the question, how are they still in business and who is eating it?

I got a bar of Hersheys from a sweet shop in Manchester. It was like eating baby vomit. Serious vomit/sour taste to it.

Ritter Sport have changed as well. More waxy.

Butyric acid is used by Hershey’s in their chocolate. That is why it tastes like vomit. American chocolate is horrible.

Owly11 · 03/01/2026 07:53

It is really hard to find a lemonade without artificial sweeteners now too. I don't really drink lemonade but at xmas it is nice to have some as a mixer but even mixed with alcohol you can taste the sweetener straight away and it is disgusting.

I ate a hersheys bar in America and can confirm it tasted like vomit
