Have you ever read an AIBU thread and realised it’s about you?

I often read these threads and sometimes think ‘ooo that sounds familiar’ but then as the post goes on none of the other details add up so it can’t be about me/ someone I know etc.
But anyone read any posts and known it’s been written about you, and if so, did you comment?

YABU because when I saw this title I was hoping you were Jezebel from the moonlit concert thread and now I'm disappointed 😂

But if you started this thread to coax her out YANBU

What is this about? I’m interested

Only when I got involved in a massive MN spat 😂 It was blindingly obvious the argument was about me. I've never had so many DMs in here and on FB! I ditched my account and started again, just to save anyone searching.

More recently - I don't think anything was about me personally, but some of the posts moaning about siblings not doing their share of elderly care prompted me to step up a bit more.

Advent0range · 02/01/2026 19:42

No but somehow I'm always worried!

Oh, god, me too! It must be pretty normal (except for those who think they're perfect).

Oh I need to look that one up! Sounds juicy!

Same, and I don’t know why as I lead a very boring drama free life !

I’ve never inspired a whole thread, but I did once see a post which must have been about me (very, very specific situation involving one of my DDs which someone had referenced). An advanced search of that poster and it quickly became obvious which friend it was! Luckily it wasn’t at all unkind or unpleasant or anything like that (along the lines of someone asking for advice and my friend had posted “this worked really well for my friend’s DD”). But it was a slightly odd experience nonetheless!

Oh no it's been deleted now as it had impacted real-life 🫣 so I won't post details here

RNApolymerase · 02/01/2026 19:58

You're so vain, you probably think this thread is about you....
Not me, but I did once recognise the situation in a "shall I pull out of a house purchase" thread because they gave a lot of information, I knew the seller of the house and let them know.

Egglio · 02/01/2026 20:01

Yes! But about 15 years ago and a different username.

With maturity and hindsight, they weren't BU, but it wasn't them, it was their arsehole of a DH we didn't want to include. I did feel bad about it. I did try to resolve it.

Bedismyhappyplace · 02/01/2026 20:10

Not going into specifics and wasn’t about me but a few years ago I recognised a family member’s very specific situation, someone posted a thread in AIBU and was told broadly that they were BU in regard to my relative (not a MIL situation). I joined in once other people had told OP that they were being unreasonable, I didn’t know the poster personally. I told my family member and showed them the post, they are not on MN, they then indirectly dealt with it. The OP actually came back to the thread and posted that the person obviously had seen the thread. It freaked me out a bit as I thought MN was big enough to be anonymous, and such a coincidence that I had seen the thread.

PInkyStarfish · 02/01/2026 20:14

I was mentioned (under a different name) on Mumsnet Reddit trolls ages ago! Apparently they all hate me! 😂 That can only be a good thing.

PInkyStarfish · 02/01/2026 20:18

Oh and going the other way, I recognised a Greyhound rescue charity who a poster was telling lies about and being quite malicious about them, so I told the owner of the charity and he joined up and put paid to her lies! She asked for the thread to be taken down and if I recall correctly she asked Mumsnet to delete every post she had ever made! Ghastly woman.

ByPoisedRaven · 02/01/2026 20:18

No, but I wouldn't mind. It would be a good insight into what the other person thinks and their perspective. Might be helpful, or might just be them posting a skewed or partial perspective.

I was way too invested in Jezebel.

harriethoyle · 02/01/2026 20:31

Same @NotARealWookiie but I felt a bit suspicious about how quickly it was moving tbh…

grrrlatrix · 02/01/2026 20:32

Not me, but remember over summer when the woman had gone on holiday with an annoying sister and the sister turned up in the thread to give her side of the story…?! 🫣

GRCP · 02/01/2026 20:33

No - my life is very drama free!

GelatinousDynamo · 02/01/2026 20:41

I remember once seeing a post about a MIL complaining that she wasn't getting any unsupervised one on one time with her son's "newest baby", which turned out to be a puppy... I could have sworn that this was written by my own MIL, only she doesn't really speak any English... I'm still weirded out by this entire situation (my MIL and the fact that she's either not the only one crazy enough to regard a puppy as a baby she needs access to, OR that she's apparently a native English speaker and has skillfully hidden it from everyone).

laxydash · 02/01/2026 20:45

I'm pretty sure that one about only eating half a carton of fresh soup is directed at me!
