Am I being fussy about new floor? Or am I right to be cross?

We've had a lot of work done on our house recently. Built an extension, moved some walls, had walls replastered, and new flooring throughout the downstairs.

I had been looking at getting LVT, but was worried about the cost. So discussed it with both the sales agent, and the man who came out to measure up and advise on details. I wanted hard flooring, warmer than tiles, that could be regularly steam cleaned (so not laminate unless they could seal it) They suggested a specific brand of vinyl sheeting that's designed to be tougher than regular vinyl. So far so good.

They have since fitted the floor, in two stages as it's the whole of the downstairs, and it needed screeding. The first team did a wonderful job, it looks lovely, any joins are practically invisible.
The issues start with the second round, and our kitchen floor. Where it joins in the doorway, there's a very obvious valley where the screed hasn't been feathered in. They have said this won't make it wear unevenly, but I'm not convinced.
It isn't all the way to the corners in multiple places. They clearly realised they'd messed it up, as in the worst spot they wedged in a random scrap of flooring so it wasn't immeadiately obvious ( I only realised after mopping the floor, and this loose bit coming up! )
They were due to come and patch it properly before Christmas, but it needed to be rescheduled (I've had to chase twice to get it rebooked)
Now the floor has been in for a bit, I've also discovered that they've cut about a metre into the vinyl, from the edge to the middle of the room. I'm guessing this was to make it easier to fit. But now I've cleaned it a few times, it's fairly obvious, and dust etc catches on it and looks shit. It's also no longer waterproof, so I can't steam clean that bit. Oh, and they've also spilt glue across one part of the floor that won't come up.

I'm not just being fussy am I? I'm so cross, I'm not sure if I'm being rational about it. Someone is coming to take a look on Thursday, and I need to get my thoughts in order, and work out what would be acceptable with regards to fixing it.

Pictures would be useful to see the affected areas you've mentioned?

MangoBiscuit · 02/01/2026 12:51

Photos, of course, sorry!
I'd just cleaned the long cut (was hoping it was a scuff, sadly not), so it looks better than it did.

It sounds terrible. I would be asking for them to take it up and re-do the work (using the first team).

Crazybigtoe · 02/01/2026 13:16

You are right to complain. I wouldn't be happy with that finish

Changingplace · 02/01/2026 13:19

That’s dreadful, I wouldn’t be happy either.

Straightjacketsandroses · 02/01/2026 13:24

You’re right to be cross. That is terrible, lazy workmanship. If they’re coming back out, I’d show them everything. It’s why I never pay trades in full until I’ve reviewed their work carefully.

SamphiretheTervosaur · 02/01/2026 13:24

You have the first fitting as irrefutable proof it should be done better

Your pictures show an unacceptable finish. Have at them, good luck!

Mrsclausemunchingonamincepie · 02/01/2026 13:31

I take your flooring and show you how the landlord's cowboy mate fitted out vinyl....
Directly over an uneven concrete floor..

Am I being fussy about new floor? Or am I right to be cross?
Pepperedpickles · 02/01/2026 13:40

Oh wow, looking at the photos it looks dreadful. I’d be asking them to redo it or refund.

MangoBiscuit · 02/01/2026 13:46

@Mrsclausemunchingonamincepie Oh no! That floor definitely wasn't level. Sorry you've been left with that.

No I’d be livid, it looks a mess - not what you want after paying I’m sure a lot of money.

wonreasleyy · 02/01/2026 14:00

That first picture, where abouts is that ?! Is that really on show ?

MangoBiscuit · 02/01/2026 14:14

The first picture is in a corner, next to the door. If the door is open it isn't as obvious, but there's still a gap right up to the tranisition strip, where it meets the carpet at the bottom of the stairs. That's where they'd wedged in an off-cut of the vinyl, so it wasn't glaringly obvious until I mopped it, and dislodged the loose piece.

That's absolutely sub-standard work that no 'professional' would want their name linked to!

I'd be emailing them with the pictures saying that it's not been laid to an acceptable standard, and that you want the whole floor re-done properly, at THEIR expense.

If they decline, I'd be putting the pictures and the name of who laid it everywhere online, Facebook etc including as a 'testimonial' on their own site if they have one.
Spread the word far and wide so that they don't do the exact same to some other poor soul.

Also, start a claim in the small claims court to recover the money so you can get the floor re-done by someone else.

Frequency · 03/01/2026 10:47

That's not been fitted correctly. They should have cut a small section of the door frame off and pushed the vinyl under, and/or used an edging strip to cover the gap, otherwise water will get under it and lift the glue.

That is bloody awful and needs pulling up and re-doing. Insist on the first team coming back.
In order to take someone to a small claims for shoddy workmanship, you must have given them the opportunity to rectify the errors listed first.
Completely unacceptable IMHO.

TheNoviceOne · 10/01/2026 12:02

That doesn't look right as the vinyl or any flooring should be to the edge I think.

MangoBiscuit · 28/01/2026 18:41

Thank you everyone who posted, you helped me quash my usual people-pleaser and get the situation sorted properly.

I called and explained again that I wasn't happy, they sent someone out to look for themselves and they agreed that it needed to be ripped up and a new piece fitted. Which they have now done, and their own cost. It's all the way to the edges, no missing corners, and no cuts in the middle. Much, much happier with it, so again, thank you all.
