Need advice about painful constipation after weaning

Hi all,

My 5 and a half month baby started weaning the last 1 week. We gave her mostly baby rice, almost once daily (missed a couple of days) for a week, mixed with milk and once also mixed it with pureed brocoli.

Baby usually poos 1-2 times a day. She hasn't pood for 24 hours now and spent the past 6 hours in a lot of tummy pain, though the pain got better temporarily when she finally did some farts (we used tummy massage and bicycle legs). Finally she's been asleep for a couple of hours.

Just looking for some advice about if this pain is normal or, if she continues to be in pain when she wakes up, we'd need to seek an urgent medical review? (Worried about how we'd get one this time of year)

She doesn't have any of the other "red flag" symptoms (no vomiting, no blood, tummy is soft to touch, etc)

Thanks for your advice!

I don't mean "normal", but I mean did any of your babies also have a lot of tummy pain and crying with their constipation when they first started weaning, even pain when they weren't doing a poo, like I described above?

Have a look at the weaning advice from the NHS, and call also your health visitor if you aren't sure.

There is no need for things like baby rice anyway, but also vegetables should be their primary source of food when they start weaning. Not starch (you can mix a bit of rice with the veg for instance).
You don't say, but quantities should be very small, and your baby is still a bit younger than the NHS recommendation so might not be ready just yet for solid food.

Tummy massages will help, but at that age I would see a GP if it's never happened before. They can prescribe lactose before 1 if need be.
