To ask if anyone else is gearing up for post-holiday blues?

We had such a lovely Christmas and New Years with lots of family and friends, parties and activities, so feeling very lucky overall. But (young adult) kids and partners are headed back to their lives. I'm pleased all three are happy with their jobs and at uni, but it was such a joy having a full house for ten days. Now it feels empty and quiet with just DH, me and the dogs.

Anyone else feeling sad the holidays are over?

YANBU. I’ve had 2 weeks of bliss with my children and DH off school, as well as extended family and friends having time off. It has been fantastic having so many visitors ☺️

I love seeing people but i also love when they leave and I get my space back and I can relax.

TokyoSushi · 01/01/2026 22:02

Yes, but I saw somebody else on here write themselves a note that said “you always feel like this at New Year, it will pass” and that’s definitely helped!

Good idea!

No, I’m moving house in two weeks and I cannot wait. The usual empty days of January are going to be very busy and full of adventure for me this year.

Oh how exciting! I hope everything goes smoothly and you have a lovely start to the year in your new house.

Mind has kicked in this evening. Feel utterly miserable.

paddyclampster · 01/01/2026 23:38

I suffer from SAD and each day we get further into January is a step nearer to Spring! That’s what gets me through!

Funnys · 01/01/2026 23:40

not yet, happily we managed to book tomorrow off work and so the blues are delayed for a couple of days. But loving the time with DS1 who is home from uni and DS2 who is mid GSCE's.

Its like a mini respite from it all

Gabbycat245 · 01/01/2026 23:45

I'm not back until Tuesday yet I am so depressed. We're overworked and understaffed and I already have a mountain of work to return to. DD doesnt want to go back to nursery and is sad about me going back to work. I'm fucked off and need a new job.

MarchInHappiness · 01/01/2026 23:52

Yup, had DD and her partner over Christmas, then my brother and his wife over New Year, so it will be just me come to tomorrow when they leave.

I am 63 and my manager has said I could go down to a four day week in the coming months, I finally have the finances to drop my hours. Trying to stay positive - already thinking about the long weekends visiting friends and family, including my DD who lives two hours away.

Nutsabouttopic · 01/01/2026 23:55

Yes feeling quite down tonight even though DC and DM are still here and some of the partners. Have had a lovely two weeks. Plenty of laughing, chatting, all around the table, house full. Im dreading Monday because some are heading Saturday and Monday im on my own in the house from early to late. DH working away, DM gone home. I know they all have their own lives and im proud of them but I see big changes by next year. Two of my DDs are in serious relationships and are talking about marriage. I think what's happened is I realised that DM is in mid 80s and won't be here forever. Just really enjoying this time

user233675892 · 02/01/2026 00:06

Hugs to everyone in the same boat.

@Nutsabouttopic I think that's part of it here too, that you never know what will have changed by next year. I feel very lucky that so far everyone seems to want to gather here, but I'm very aware that nothing's permanent.

@Gabbycat245 Ugh. Sorry, that's miserable. Hopefully 2026 will be the year.

@Funnys Hope you enjoy the time off.

I have just put away my Christmas decorations and got out my January decorations. I find it a tricky month so have invested in a nice blanket, bedding, candles, different fairy lights to Christmas lights and I have planted up pots of spring bulbs and put them all over my house. Since doing this I enjoy January more and highly recommend :)

RampantIvy · 02/01/2026 00:13

No, not at all. DH is deeply unsociable so the Christmas period is always very low key. I find this time of year very dull and boring. It's too cold to go out and do anything interesting (DH is recovering from major surgery) and places of interest are closed.

TheScenicWay · 02/01/2026 08:30

yeah me too and I like my job mostly. It’s been a nice break. We went away, saw family, I’ve arranged to see a show with family this weekend but im
sad it’s Friday and everything is back to normal.
I’ve booked stuff to do throughout January. Got books to read. Some resolutions to start but back to everyone being busy.
We don’t get enough downtime and rest like this.

RobinTheCavewoman · 02/01/2026 08:35

I had to cancel my plans between boxing day and now because of the flu so am feeling glum about that. I'm focusing on feeling better and planning nice things for when it warms up to help get over myself it.
