To ask if anyone here can give a rough valuation on some books?

I have just found 3 first edition Harry Potter books in my storage. 2 of them contain some rare errors - spelling mistakes, extra pages and ghost pages.

Does anyone on here have any knowledge on how much they would roughly be worth please?

The order of the phoenix
The half blood prince
deathly hallows

You'd be best going to a proper collector and asking them.

None at all but I hope you’ve found a little gold mine

I'll give you £10 each for them! :)

Do an ebay search for sold prices, for similar faults and editions as yours. Or get a rare book auction house to give you an estimate.

Unlikely to be very much at all - the series was hugely popular by the time the 5th, 6th and 7th books came out and so the first printing was gigantic (in the multi-millions). There are tonnes of these books out there; they’re definitely not rare collectors’ items. If it was the Philosopher’s Stone, it would be a different story - the first printing of that book only had about 500 copies.

This. Practically everyone who was reading the series bought the later books as soon as they came out. There are thousands in circulation

They'll be with about a quarter of what they are listed at on abebooks

randomchap · 01/01/2026 17:10

And condition is everything

Yeah, do a search in eBay for, eg
deathly hallows first edition errors

Then filter on Sold items.

I wouldn't start handing in your notice at work just yet as when I had a look, the vast majority go for a few pounds but obviously some errors are rarer than others and they can occasionally go for £100 or £150

rachelvbwho · 01/01/2026 17:12

I think it's only the first three, maybe four, that have the valuable first editions. After that they were being printed by the millions sold out of crates at Asda for the midnight launches etc.

I think I also have three first editions, the same three as you, and pretty sure when I looked a few years ago (my daughter insisted) they weren't worth anything special.

parietal · 01/01/2026 17:14

look on abe books

Can you explain? Tbh I sent them the details of one valuable book and they said no thanks, so I’ve still not sold it…

I’d say go to a professional- all we can do is speculate and you might get lucky
