To think the London NYE fireworks were an excellent FU to Farage and Tommy Ten Names?

The NYE fireworks always get me a bit emotional but this year I think it was up there with the 2020 covid ones. The message was beautiful and ran through the whole thing. The way they got the EU stars in, the dig at the mini roundabout painters and flag hangers.
I’ve lived in London my whole adult life and I felt the display reflected it perfectly.

I LOVED IT!

A magnificent FUCK YOU to the flag shaggers was a perfect start to the year for me, and I'm FAR from alone!

Why is NYE the time to send a great big FUCK YOU...?

when people are at home minding their business expecting some pretty fireworks and to feel positive about the year ahead... is that the time for Sadiq to make remind them of the misery of 2025, make a political point and sow more division....

Like i said I dont agree with any of the white van man stuff but I just wanted to watch a few fireworks and pop to bed.

They also played Land of Hope and Glory - the Reform anthem. 🤷‍♀️. But the fireworks are what they are - a pretty abd impressive display. I’ve lived in London for decades, born and bred here, and fireworks aren’t political. 🙄

So it wasn’t about all of us living in peace and harmony regardless of race or religion?

Clearly not! But they’re sooo tolerant and kind remember!

I was unhappy that it was politicised and although I voted for Sadiq Khan,I'm not happy that he played a large role in it with his speech and the starting message that the fireworks are 'Presented by the Mayor of London.' I doubt he personally pays for the fireworks!

I thought everyone who lives in London had to pay some sort of extra tax towards the NYE fireworks or something like that. But maybe it was just an urban myth.

The ticket price will no way cover the cost of the fireworks, staffing, policing, security, etc.

Well someone upthread said that the display cost 3m. I can’t be bothered to fact check that but here’s what I know.

Tickets were between £20 and £65 which puts the average at £42.50. 100k people attended. That’s there or there abouts of £4,250,000

Aplstrudl · 01/01/2026 16:25

Appalling in every way and despicable that we are practically the only city charging to see fireworks. So FU Khan.

I stand corrected it was £4 million and your prices are off because Londoners don’t pay as much for tickets. Tbh I think they should get them free considering they are already paying with their taxes.

It always makes me laugh the way people who bang on about ‘inclusivity’ and ‘tolerance’ are often the most hate-filled and intolerant people you’ll ever meet. No one voted for mass immigration or multiculturalism. They have been IMPOSED on this country, and they have completely destroyed any sense of shared culture or shared history. But somehow, for reasons I’ve never understood, that’s OK. It’s OK to destroy the identity of a Daily Mail reading Brexit voter. It doesn’t count. And then the left have the nerve to call Farage and Tommy Robinson fascists!! THEY’RE the fascists. THEY’RE the ones who’ve destroyed people’s national identity and forced them to accept a new one.

You do know which mayor introduced charging for the fireworks? Hint: it wasn't Khan.

Maybe. But the England flag was displayed like the ones painted on the mini roundabouts and the commentary over the top when it was shown was about taking back the flag (I don’t remember the details) so I’d be surprised if it was a coincidence.

What definitely wasn’t a coincidence was the overriding message of inclusiveness, togetherness and multiculturalism. Which absolutely was intentional.

Maybe you should look back at previous displays and tell me which one didn't have England and Union Jacks.

You are just noticing something you wouldn't have blinked at previously!

Which new national identity have we been forced to accept and who exactly forced this change upon us?

Utterly unreasonable. Unless you want to see Reform’s political propaganda if/when they win. Civic celebrations aren’t the place for politicised messaging from any direction.

If you think Reform are above political propaganda, I’ve a bridge to sell you.

This - it’s very egotistical to have from the mayor of London at the beginning when it was paid for by tax payers money.

You already had this . Boris acting the maggot on his stupid zip wire. If you're too thick to join the dots you get what you deserve.

The pp point is a good one as GEs will always happen, and you never know who you’ll get next.

A large proportion of London-dwellers don’t pay income tax, because they are entirely dependent upon the state. So those particular people aren’t really paying for the fireworks at all.

The cheapest Londoner ticket was £20.
I can accept that some of it may have been subsidised by some kind of events budget that comes out of taxes. But to say it was all tax funded is simply not true, it generated millions in revenue.

Do you think people living in Sydney who don't get to see the fireworks - because they are working or caring for someone or don't like fireworks - should have to pay for them?

Is it necessary to see the Fireworks? Should money be spent on fireworks rather than on social care or education?

I think ticketing it, is a fairer way to pay for it - it has costs so SOMEONE pays for it where ever they are. No firework display is free.

Ultimately you CAN watch the display on TV if you have a licence fee anyway so it's not like it's inaccessible either.

EasternStandard · 01/01/2026 16:45

corlan · 01/01/2026 15:43

I don't remember a speech from Boris Johnson being included as part of the presentation in the past.
I've just googled and most of the money for the fireworks comes from the Greater London Authority arts and culture budget - so largely funded by council tax payers in London.

I’m wondering too, I just remember the fireworks not the big thing about a mayor’s fireworks.

I did too. It was a wonderful way to start the new year. It made me feel a little less gloomy about where the country seems to be headed.
