Can I wear fur?

CosmopolitanCocktail · 31/12/2025 17:16

I have two fur coats previously owned by my great grandmother.
I have kept them in my wardrobe for the last 20 years.
One is a short mink coat so now bang on trend.
I am a total animal lover but these animals died 60 years ago and the pelts are beautiful. To just discard them seems wasteful so truly torn.
So would I AIBU to wear it?

Allegedly dying form pollution because of fake fur trade (where do you get that from out of interest?) Is not comparable to being kept in horrific conditions then being skinned alive is it?

How do you think faux fur is made? Do you think there is no pollution involved?

Real fur is worse on immediate visible animal cruelty, I give you that, but by every other metric faux is dreadful. Including long-term environmental harms of the sort that kill animals slowly and painfully.

Sharptonguedwoman · 01/01/2026 09:05

No. You can't wear a notice to say these are vintage so it's ok. The wearing of fur? Absolutely unacceptable, for me at least.

'How do you think faux fur is made? Do you think there is no pollution involved?'

Well campaign to stop fake fur production then! For some posters to argue that pollution caused by manufacturing of fake fur compares to inhumane conditions and horrific slaughter in the production of revolting real fur coats is whataboutery gone mad.

Doesn’t bring them back to life though does it?

Ah.
The response of the person who didn't want to be told that there's an alternative to binning the skins of dead animals.

You want to wear it and you want us all to tell you it's fine. Aggravating when someone suggests something else, isn't it?

Leather is not a byproduct of the meat, or dairy, industry. HTH.

PETA define it as a co-product in fact, which chimes with what you're saying (I think).

Sounds like you have decided its ok to wear them then.
I wouldn't do it but I think its down to the individual

When my Nanna died we put her fur coat in the skip. There were a few options for it but by far the easiest for us at a really difficult time was just to load it into the skip outside when we were clearing out her house. It never occurred to us once that it should be worn again.

I assume you were not born yesterday and are therefore aware of the disastrous effects of the fashion industry on the environment? There are already numerous campaigns, documentaries and studies available. Charities and people who care about the effects of fashion on the environment have to take on giants like Shein or Inditex. The scale is not comparable to the campaign against the fur industry. Fur trade was never that big and so heavily marketed.

How is it whataboutery to point out that burning a vintage fur won’t bring the animals back to life? The fur farms have been banned in most developed countries, even the largest producers like Norway closed their farms eventually, whereas overproduction of clothing remains one the biggest environmental threat nowadays.

I am not condoning the fur industry but it’s always a better choice for the animals that are still alive on this planet to reuse existing clothing rather than buy new, especially synthetic ones.

I really hope the day when people throw drinks at fake fur as eagerly as at real ones is coming because otherwise we are doomed.

Impacts of Fast Fashion on the Environment | Earth.Org

Fashion, especially fast fashion, is among the most damaging industries for the environment, responsible for 10% of carbon emissions and 20% of wastewater.

No, I wasn't born yesterday. Do try to debate without being so rude and unpleasant.

This thread is about a real fur coat and whether the op should wear it, the answer is no. Slaughtering for fur is abhorrent. Wearing it because it won't bring the poor slaughtered animal back to life is a ridiculous excuse.

You could maybe take your whataboutery and stats and start another unrelated thread about fashion and the environment?

FuckRealityBringMeABook · 03/01/2026 10:29

It is not whataboutery as my original post was in reply to a woman who binned a vintage fur and bought a faux fur one instead. Thereby adding to the total sum of dead animals in the world.

Terriblytwee · 03/01/2026 10:32

I wouldn’t. I’d be constantly thinking about the horror that the animal went through and its death. I’d also hate to be considered a woman who thinks it’s ok to wear fur and all that entails. I couldn’t legitimise that.
