Why does it never snow !

It’s forecast to be -3 here over the weekend but yet no snow to come, how can it be so cold but not snow ? I’m so sick of miserable grey cloud cover, my two youngest have never seen snow ! It seems like it never snows anymore

I'm originally from Bristol, which has a micro climate. It can be snowing in Somerset and Gloucestershire but Bristol is dry and green. 9

Don't tempt fate, it might snow to spite us! 😆😆

I hate it because I'm self employed and lose money, plus live fairly rurally and it doesn't take much to not be able to get out. Humbug.

Sidebeforeself · 31/12/2025 09:36

Snow I can handle but its ice I dread

In one way it is a small blessing and a positive thing from climate change, as even one inch of snow causes too many drivers to panic and parts of the rail network to grind almost to a halt.

Less snow disruption but more flooding instead (warmer seas and air mean storms holding more moisture) which is more localised but also a lot more destructive. In future people in many parts of the country simply won’t be able to insure their homes against flood risk.

I assume the people who want snow just don't actually have to go anywhere, don't work outside the home, don't need to manage driving, and are sufficiently able bodied not to worry about falling if it ices over.

Exactly.
Why want snow?
It's more hassle and bother.
Where I come from, my father used to call it "the white death".

Toottooot · 31/12/2025 09:45

Sna’s forecast i’morn.

WillowIvy · 31/12/2025 09:47

We get snow every year, it’s forecast for tomorrow. I hate the bloody stuff. We’re very fortunate our business is at our home so I don’t need to drive or go out in it unless to walk the dogs.

HeadyLamarr · 31/12/2025 09:47

We're culturally programmed to expect it at the wrong time of year. In the UK we're statistically more likely to have snow at Easter than at Christmas!

Yes, there are fewer snowy days due to climate change. But we also remember the snowy days from our childhood disproportionately strongly for such rare days.

January to March are the most likely snowy months, with 5 days in Jan/Feb and 4.5 in March.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 31/12/2025 09:53

We did have a bit back in November - outer SW London. It didn’t settle, though.

I know what you mean. Maybe book a winter trip up to Scotland or somewhere next year so your kids can experience it.

I wouldn’t book Scotland ! It’s a bit of an assumption that we get endless snow all winter. I live in central Scotland and last year we got precisely one day of snow, most disappointing! Further north, Aberdeen for example get more but it’s by no means a given .

wonreasleyy · 31/12/2025 10:21

I understand snow can be a pain for some, but the child in me absolutely loves to see it ! When it’s all silent as the snow falls is just lovely ! I think being in the middle of the country doesn’t help either..
I have just checked the forecast again and we now have a yellow warning for snow and ice on Friday, BUT I’m sure it’ll be a dusting and then some rain to wash it away

I'm heading towards 60 and my DCs, now early 20s, have experienced far more snow than I did throughout my childhood, all located in south London.
There were several periods of very heavy snow between mid 00's-mid-10s that I particularly remember with the school run etc. But we do have light flurries most years, although probably not really settled snow.

I live in a village in North Somerset. I remember years ago having to ring work to tell them I would be late as it had snowed quite heavily. They refused to believe me as there was only a light dusting there. I sent them a photo of conditions outside my house to prove it. Work was 4 miles away from where I live. The Mendips have a climate all of their own.

There was more than enough snow in 1963 to last me a lifetime. It started snowing on Boxing Day 1962 and didn't finally clear until the middle of March.

Interestingly, I was 4 that winter and can't remember it specifically.

PhantomOfAllKnowledge · 31/12/2025 10:29

It snowed last year about this time round my way and then it froze so it stayed on the ground for about three weeks getting icier and icier. No thanks.

Justbecauseyoucandoesntmeanyoushould · 31/12/2025 10:29

It snows. N Yorks had quite a lot of snow last winter. More than one lot and the January snowfall lay for a couple of weeks.
