HELP ... I need sheets that don't bloody shrink !!!

Does anyone know where I can get fitted sheets that stay the same size as they are supposed to?

I am so fed up with having to do battle everytime I want to change my sheets because they've shrunk slightly and I'm having to lift up the mattress to get the bloody corner on and then lean back on my whole weight to stretch them down to the bottom. I have a profiling bed, so you would think that bending the mattress in half would make it easier !! Nope, because as soon as you put the bed back into flat mode the mattress remains bowed shaped because of the, now too small, sheets that cost a fortune.

Every sheet change is a major battle, and TBH a bloody good workout, but afterwards I need a nap, a hot drink and a bit of chocolate, to recover from it.

If anyone can point me in the direction of soft, comfy sheets that stay that way after washing, you will earn my undying gratitude for all eternity (for what it's worth)

The bed is up against the wall, in a corner, so the farside and the head are almost impossible to get at, which means that my 60 year old, unfit, falling apart, body has to perform gymnastics that would put the Olympic team to shame, just to re-make the damn thing.

All I want in my twilight years is a nice comfy, easy to make, bed (small violin playing in the background) Or Henry Cavill to come round every week to make it for me (which would seem to be as realistic as getting unshrinking sheets)

Are you washing them hotter than it instructs ?

KurtCobainLover · 30/12/2025 10:08

Tesco easy care sheets don’t shrink. I wash mine at 60 and tumble dry. So far I haven’t had a problem.

Chemenger · 30/12/2025 10:09

I find that fitted sheets are a false convenience. They are hard to fold up and seldom seem to fit a bed properly. I much prefer flat sheets, it takes seconds to tuck them in, they look neat. However, I can see that if the bed is against a wall flat sheets might be harder to do, unless you can pull the bed out. We have ikea pure cotton sheets and they haven’t shrunk (I lost the argument with DH so they are fitted, against my better judgement).

JLbaby · 30/12/2025 10:10

I get mine from Dusk (they always have a sale on!), I always buy the deep fitted sheets, they don’t shrink and wash really well.

SaltyDragon · 30/12/2025 10:13

OMG I am gobsmacked by the speed of responses. I am genuinely grateful to you all for your recommendations. I may have to restrain myself from going overboard because I love the feeling of soft sheets.

Thanks everyone :)

Where are you buying your sheets from? I'm older than you and have never encountered this problem. I have 100% cotton bedding. It tightens up nicely in the wash, in a way that polycotton mix doesn't, so you get a nice wrinkle-free bottom sheet, at least when you first put it on. They don't, however, actually shrink. Lifting your mattress etc is surely something you just have to do to get the corners in. Can't you move your bed to give you better access? I know it's not always possible.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 30/12/2025 10:26

Used to have a lot of trouble with fitted sheets for certain beds that had quilted mattress covers on. Had to get dh to bust a gut trying to get corners fitted on.

Eventually solved it by buying extra deep fitted sheets from John Lewis! Why I didn’t think of that before I have no idea.

Wonderknicks · 30/12/2025 10:27

I got so fed up of sheets shrinking (Dunelm, looking at you) that I now use flat sheets. The best fitted ones I ever had were from Costco but they don't do the same ones any more. I still have one going strong on the spare room bed
The alternative is to size up - a king size sheet on a double bed etc. One of my kids had a 4 foot bed & the sheets became impossible so I now use a double when the bed is needed.

Coconutter24 · 30/12/2025 10:30

Are you buying the correct depth sheet for your mattress?

I prefer flat sheets, too. They stay smooth much better than fitted sheets do imo.

Mine are Dunelm's pure cotton ones, which come in a huge range of colours. They wash really well, keep their softness and I've seen no evidence of shrinkage. I have pillow cases from the same range, and I think I'd've noticed if they'd shrunk.

I actually think they're better than the John Lewis equivalent.

MujeresLibres · 30/12/2025 10:33

I've found IKEA fitted sheets to be good. I sometimes wash at 90 degrees, but they keep their shape.

Somethingneedstochange78 · 30/12/2025 11:08

The one I have on my bed now is from Debenhams. I've had it years and it's not shrunk. Still lovely and soft. I always make sure I buy 100% cotton. I usually buy from Dunelm now as we have one local. Apart from DD she has a queen size bed and which are difficult to get so I get her's from next.

hushabybaby · 30/12/2025 11:10

White company sheets don't shrink, and I buy the extra deep ones so they fit with a topper. I wash them at 60°. M&S extra deep sheets are also very good quality and also don’t shrink and have more elastic around the corners so easier to put on.

muddyford · 30/12/2025 11:11

M&S cotton sheets don’t shrink.

awrbc81 · 30/12/2025 11:14

Strange, I’ve never shrunk sheets. Are they 100% cotton? That shouldn’t shrink even on a 90 wash (I wash mine at 60 usually), they’re not fancy ones just nice 100% cotton from Dunelm/Next/Argos

It's not just you, OP. My 100% cotton fitted sheets have shrunk to the point that I nearly break my fingers getting them on. I washed them at 60 or more and assumed this had shrunk them.

I just bought new deep-fitted ones from White Company and they go on like a dream.

hushabybaby · 30/12/2025 12:22

@MeridianBi have got some white co bedding that has lasted 10+ years! I buy in the sale usually. Definitely worth the money

Youreallywantedtotalktomedidntyou · 30/12/2025 12:47

We have White and Green bedding which is lovely, but apparently still quite a tight squeeze on our mattress plus down topper combo. Quite tempted to swap to flat sheets as suggested by several previous posters, but would need buy in from the designated sheet changer.

dailyconniptions · 30/12/2025 13:23

Get the 'deep' fitted sheets. Plenty of room for the mattress.

DappledThings · 30/12/2025 13:25

Never had sheets shrink. Have bought them from Dunelm, Argos, Sainsbury's, M&S and others I can't remember.

PrincessOfPreschool · 30/12/2025 13:27

My sheets have all shrunk. I have habitat ones and Soak & Sleep. Both shrunk at 60. I never wash sheets at 90 but I often wash sheets and towels together hence 60 to get towels really clean.

caringcarer · 30/12/2025 13:28

My DS has the 100 percent Egyptian cotton 400 thread count from Argos. They are on offer ATM with 1/3 off price. I have the deeper corner ones but sadly they are not on offer. They are however lovely and thick. They sell 800 thread count too if you want higher quality. Avoid ones not 100 percent cotton as they can shrink. I wash mi e at 60 degrees and they have never shrunk.

ApisMellifera · 30/12/2025 13:32

I used to have this problem but now I buy the extra deep fitted sheets. They go on really well even after 60 Deg washing. The extra fabric in the corner is the key to getting them on easily. I have a range of different brands, all 100% cotton
