Sprouts

AIBU to think if sprouts are so great, why does every recipe aimed at converting sprout-doubters involves a ton of bacon and/or covering them in cheese? Most things are nice covered in bacon and cheese.

Couldn't agree more. Even bacon and cheese can't improve sprouts to an edible level. And they make nearly everything great.

randomchap · 29/12/2025 22:33

They are great just steamed

murasaki · 29/12/2025 22:36

They are best left in the shop.

Splendidlydidy · 29/12/2025 22:38

I love them boiled with a roast and gravy. If you don’t like them, don’t eat them.

Hoardasurass · 29/12/2025 22:38

Lightly boiled and slathered in butter 😃

BartholemewTheCat · 29/12/2025 22:39

Steamed and covered in gravy, though I am also partial to some bacon and marmite action.

FollowSpot · 29/12/2025 22:44

I like sprouts as they are!

Many popular veg also get covered in other stuff. Garlic, honey and mustard, cheese sauce, mint etc.

RobertaFirmino · 29/12/2025 23:11

I really have tried to like sprouts, they are full of goodness but however I cook them, they still taste vile. I was given some from a neighbour's allotment last year. He's very organic and lentil-weavy so I was convinced his sprouts would change my mind but sadly not. I

I've never seen the point of coating vegetables with unhealthy foodstuffs. It feels like it cancels out the healthiness of the veg.

I agree!

mondaytosunday · 29/12/2025 23:19

Well we love them just as they are. This year we roasted them. If you don’t like them don’t have them!

ShetlandishMum · 29/12/2025 23:20

We often eat them just steamed. They are great.

PickAChew · 29/12/2025 23:21

I had some with dal, earlier 😋

DappledThings · 29/12/2025 23:22

As a side dish I like them just steamed. Delicious. Have no desire to convert anyone, happy for you to continue missing out!

As main dish I like them roasted with brocoli, halloumi and harissa.

Izzywizzy85 · 29/12/2025 23:26

I love sprouts. Truly I do. I’m a fan of most bitter tasting veg. I don’t really give a shit if other people don’t. Can’t imaging caring what vegetables other people eat or don’t eat.

HaloDolly · 29/12/2025 23:35

After years of hating sprouts I grew to love them. As long as they are not overdone.

Your looking at wrong receipes. I don't eat bacon however I slice them finely and have them raw on a salad or chop them up snd put them in a stir fry. Or I make Sprouts Bhel Puri, Sprouts Masala with papad or steamed sprout Tadka.

Im dont bother to try to convert people, its not worth the conversation!

MeinKraft · 29/12/2025 23:46

That’s like saying if roast beef is so nice why cover it in gravy 🤔

Addybee · 29/12/2025 23:48

It really doesn’t need all that extra stuff- roasted/pan fried is my fave way to have it. I have it so much during the week

WilfredsPies · 29/12/2025 23:51

Bacon and cheese ruin them. I like them boiled to within an inch of their life and plain. If I do get the urge to start mixing them with stuff, then bubble and squeak (just sprouts and mash, fried) is really the only way to go.

I love them roasted (in olive oil). Ends trimmed then cut in half from stem to top in then roasted until the outsides are crispy!

but I'll have them chopped finely in salad. My least favourite is boiled for far too long.

i LOVE cheese, but not with Sprouts, im veggie so never had them with bacon.

worstnotholiday · 29/12/2025 23:56

But the same argument could be said of anything- the most glaringly the obvious at this time of year is Turkey- which takes brining/ sausage stuffing/ butter basting/ bacon wrapping etc but also

roast potatoes- better cooked in goose or duck fat

parsnips- introduced to honey or maple are better

carrots- butter and caraway

green beans- lemon and garlic

squash- sage and butter

lettuce- anchovy and Parmesan (Caesar)

steak- add mushrooms and peppercorns

and on and on and on

Dont eat sprouts if you don’t like them. BUT they are made bette for chestnuts and bacon- that doesn’t mean I don’t like sprouts. It’s the basic premise of good cookery. Some pairings just work and compliment one another (and the almost always involve a good fat)

Funnywonder · 29/12/2025 23:57

I love them plain. I hate when people put bacon and crap in my sprouts. Anyway, why torture yourself by trying to find ways to eat them? Other vegetables are available. I hate spinach. I don’t eat spinach. Easy peasy.

Erin1975 · 30/12/2025 00:00

I love sprouts. Other people dislike them. That's fine. They do seem to be a bit of a marmite vegetable though, people either live or hate them.

They definitely go well with bacon, not sure about cheese.

Fifthtimelucky · 30/12/2025 00:07

I love them just boiled or steamed, especially when eaten as part of a Christmas dinner when everything else is so rich.

Screamingabdabz · 30/12/2025 00:09

I bloody love ‘em just nicely boiled (not mushy). I would happily just have a plate of them as Christmas dinner. It makes my heart sink when people shred them and put bacon and other crap on them.
