I’ve just changed colour scheme but I’m not sure if I regret it. The grey was before and brown is now (yes I have posted before with photos of the carpet when it was laid and now NC!)

Why are the stairs in the living room? Have you knocked out a wall or two? Doesn’t it make it colder being open to the staircase like that?

Many houses are built like that? Surprised its news to you.

PuddleglumPevensie · 29/12/2025 21:00

I would’ve stayed with the lighter carpet colour; it opened up your space and made it seem bigger. I’d also have painted the woodwork white, and brought the clock down lower.

Upsetbetty · 29/12/2025 21:19

Honestly…I don’t really see any difference at all. Both versions are very “meh”. Theres no life or actual colour in the room, no personality at all.

Yes, me too. The fashion for this comes and goes and a lot of people like the natural wood look. Two decades ago people were stripping back painted woodwork to recover the wood. Unless you want to paint it, it's fine.

I like the brown better. It makes the place feel much warmer.

It does. And its so much easier to keep. I hate white woodwork. Just because of the work it takes to keep it looking fresh. I'd never paint mine again.

Anothercoffeex · 29/12/2025 21:45

I like funky bold colors, with a twist.
I like different, walking in to someones home and think yeah they have stamped this place.
When i go in homes and its whites, gays, beige its bland to me no life init.
Or homes where everything is matching carpet walls cusions etc all matching.

I also hate homes with huge sofas, carpet, stuff/ clutter everywhere and walls and side tables covered in pitchers and photos but thats a me thing.

namechangetheworld · 29/12/2025 21:48

The second photo is better, much more cosy, and the brown tones in the carpet and the new paint suit the woodwork.

OceanSafari · 29/12/2025 22:09

I definitely prefer the brown, it looks much warmer

MooMooAchoo · 30/12/2025 12:33

I think I’ve ordered the wrong sofa colour 😔 I ordered dark brown before we had carpet fitted - now after getting chat GPT to show me I wish I had gone lighter

The lighter one is hideous. Sorry. The brown one looks too big also…out of curiosity why did you choose browns?

IllAdvised · 30/12/2025 12:36

So, hsve you ordered the sofa in the left hand photo, OP?

Hufflebuffs · 30/12/2025 12:39

The brown sofa and carpet would be better if the woodwork was all white like the doors. Do the stairs too. Add some colour and plants etc to soften it up.

MooMooAchoo · 30/12/2025 12:39

@IllAdvised yes it comes next week x

Hufflebuffs · 30/12/2025 12:40

The cream sofa is very dated. The brown is better.

MooMooAchoo · 30/12/2025 12:40

@Upsetbetty do you think so? It isn’t to scale it’s just what AI has done to help me picture it. I like brown/mocha/beige colours

It's hard to say, OP, because it isn't finished. So currently it looks as if there's nobody living there.
You need books, photos and pictures to give it some personality, so that it's a reflection of you, and not just some random person.
(But I agree that brown us warmer than grey, so you've made a good start).

TheGrimSmile · 30/12/2025 12:47

I prefer the new colour. It's warmer.

OriginalUsername2 · 30/12/2025 12:48

I like the brown sofa, it’s warm and cosy looking. I think working with what you’ve got you need to stain the wood darker to match the sofa.

It might be better on the other side of the room though, it looks like it shouldn’t go there.

Get some storage boxes or an ottoman the same colour as the sofa and hide all the crap away (no offence!). Move the clock down.

If I’m really picky, doors should be the same colour as doorframes.

wordywitch · 30/12/2025 12:49

None of it is to my taste as there is zero colour or personality. To liven it up I’d paint the woodwork white, put some art on the walls, an area rug on that large empty floor space, and colourful throw cushions on the sofa at the very least.

BrownTroutBluesAgain · 30/12/2025 12:52

As others have said that stained woodwork isn’t great.
Its dating the space so I’d paint it, not bright white though.

Notellinganyone · 30/12/2025 12:53

I agree with the poster who says it’s very 1970s. That dark brown carpet is a heavy colour and the woodwork is very shiny and orangey. That said I’d always go for floorboards, white woodwork and a grey green F & B colour so we have very different tastes.

santasbaubles · 30/12/2025 12:55

You need a big rug on that carpet to break it up a bit.

MyNeedyLilacBird · 30/12/2025 12:57

It all just looks very dated and uninspiring with no personality.

Nothing goes but the woodwork on the doors and stairs is especially bad. I'm not a lover of brown (or grey) colours tbh but that my personal choice.

Instagram/Pinterest is a good start for inspiration

staringatthesun · 30/12/2025 12:58

The browns and creams are nicer, and much warmer than the grey. As other posters have said, I'd paint the woodwork. It also needs some personality stamped on it. Look for art you like, even framed posters/prints or postcards can make a difference. Get some nice cushions in a contrasting colour and a rug to pull it all together.

NoSoupForU · 30/12/2025 12:59

I don't like either. I'm not a fan of these bland trends of no colour. Also don't care for tinted woodwork.

Merryoldgoat · 30/12/2025 13:03

Your pics give no idea of what style you are going for.

I don’t like browns but have seen rooms where it looks lovely.

You need to pick a style, colour palette, inspiration pic and go from there if you want a room that looks intentional.
