What beloved TV show could do with a reboot? Would it work in today's age?

Mine is The Bill

Its started from 1984(!) on U&Drama so i'm starting it on the app

I think we could do with a new long running series, and The Bill could be it! There's obviously crime series like Line of Duty etc, but this, imo, would be long running like Casualty

Dunno how it would work though without being accused of being 'woke'

Columbo! The original often had big names as guest stars (Johnny Cash, William Shatner) playing the murderer and great writers and directors. A pre-Jaws Steven Spielberg directed one of the first episodes. There is so much that could be done with it if it were to be revived. I remember reading a Guardian article several years ago speculating about a possible reboot with Mark Ruffalo playing Columbo but nothing ever came of it.

Bucky O’Hare - saving the planet hasn’t gone away!

Tenko. I loved watching it!

I loved this and got the box set a few years ago. The thing is, when you watch a show from back then you realise how slow paced it was. I think you are about 3 episodes in before anything serious happens plotwise. They spend all this time introducing the characters.

In a modern remake I bet you would be straight in to the action and find out all the backgrounds in flashback

Tales of the Unexpected. Some great stories, but it's difficult to watch that sort of 'TV play' format these days, it's so old-fashioned.

ColinOfficeTrolley · 29/12/2025 17:11

I think Peter Falk was far too beloved as Columbo to do a reboot.

Or maybe that's just a personal opinion as I loved and still do watch Columbo.

Tartansocksandcrocs · 29/12/2025 17:15

Moonlighting, I used to watch it every week on my little black and white portable TV when I was about 14.

I'd like to see a remake of this and in colour!

Blakes Seven
The Littlest Hobo
Citizen Smith
Hill St Blues

I was going to say Blake's 7, many many discussions on YouTube as to how this could be carried on.

As an aside, I got the first series on Blu-ray for Christmas. Off to join the crew of the Liberator once they've all gone back to work

RobertaFirmino · 29/12/2025 17:16

I've always thought Ryan Thomas (ex Corrie) could make a convincing Columbo as long as he could get the voice right.

I'd suggest The Life and Loves Of A She-Devil but unsure if Julie T. Wallace could be bettered.

I would like a modern remake of The Good Life. The original was fantastic but there's probably an equally good modern take to be had

Ive said that for a while. Now Tom and Barbara would probably have their own lifestyle programme and have written lots of Green life books. Had own channel in lockdown. Barbara will be in next year's Strictly and Tom's in the Traitors. Margot is green (get it) with envy.

There was a comedy series about the TAVR back in the 90's.
All Quiet On The Preston Front.
Not long running (don't know if they made a second series even) but I liked it at the time.

Loved The Bill back in the day but it veered into soap opera territory with more & more unlikely storylines & characters, gave up on it in during the last few years.
I think that is the problem, program makers want to keep "developing" characters so in the end they take precedence over the storylines.

I loved (All Quiet on the) Preston Front!

There were 3 series https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_Quiet_on_the_Preston_Front

The bloke who played Lloydy ("makes me laugh!") turned up on Pointless as a contestant a while back

Kick-start!

I loved this about age 8-10 so around 1984-6. My Ds would love it now. I wonder if the old episodes are available to watch.

I adored Love Boat too and things like Duty Free and Are You Being Served? HiDeHi but set at a Center Parcs kind of place might work.

I remember 80s TV so fondly.

They need to do more Jonathan Creek. That was 90s I think.

So many iconic tv shows from my youth and nothing more modern compares at all. Some great modern stuff but nothing comparable.

The original is on STV at the moment.

I’d love blind date back

bridgetreilly · 29/12/2025 17:48

The Adventure Game! It could be so cool done with modern tech.

I love The Good Life and have often thought about this, but sadly I don't think a reboot would work in the present time. People are so polarised and so trenchant in their beliefs that the idea of a liberal leftie couple such as Barbara and Tom being friends with arch Tories such as Margot and Jerry would likely meet with hostility.

PancakePatty · 29/12/2025 17:57

Soldier soldier would be fab as a remake.

My guilty pleasure is watching re-runs of the Catherine Cookson novels that were made in to tv series in the 90’s.
I love a period drama so would like to see Catherine’s stories brought to life again. I love the old houses and scenes of the north east.

The A team but dogs.
Colonel John Hannibal Smith (George Peppard) played by a Golden Retriever.

Captain Howling mad Murdoch (Dwight Schultz) played by a Boston Terrier.

Mr T (B A Barracus) played by an XL Bully.

Lieutenant Templeton 'Faceman' Peck (Dirk Benedict) played by a Weimaraner.

Openmouthinsertfood · 29/12/2025 18:12

Can I have another one? How could I have forgotten dear old POB. I was watching the day he knocked teddies head off and told himm to, "Iss off Teddy!" And was immediately cancelled never to be seen again. 😓(I remember rushing to tell my mum that POB swore but she didn't believe me. 😂)
