Teachers with crap grammar

One of my neighbours is a primary school teacher. She has lots of draws in her house instead of drawers, she doesn't know when to use your and your and she's always saying what she would of done. Just how can teachers be so crap at English?

Sadly the entrance requirements have lowered because nobody wants to do the job. Good quality graduates go elsewhere.

I was a primary teacher for many years and I agree with the first comment. Experienced, good calibre teachers have retired or left the profession and it's very hard to attract and retain good quality replacements because frankly, it's a shit job.

Pretty awful. I thought all trainee teachers had to pass an English test regardless of previous qualifications. I would be very annoyed if she taught my child English.

I work in the NHS and the nurses coming through are of much poorer quality than those we recruited 20 years ago. Beggars can’t be choosers and we are attracting some people to public services who are not of a decent calibre and who are not up to the job.

Horrorscope · 27/12/2025 18:56

Yeah, it’s a thing now and it’s been going on for quite a while because I remember the poor English on my children’s school letters (and they’re now in their twenties).

When I did a HND and degree, you HAD to be able to write well. Now, apparently, it doesn’t matter if you can’t read or write when you’re doing a degree.

When I was teaching I was often left horrified at report time when we were given a set of reports to proofread. Many were littered with mistakes.

Grammar. The difference between knowing your crap and knowing you're crap 😊

KateMiddletonsExtensions · 27/12/2025 19:26

I just spotted the mistake in my OP! I meant your and you're, obviously 🙈

While most of us do use correct grammar, both in the classroom and in our personal lives, some colleagues find grammar and spelling challenging.

Spelling is one thing -if you know you have a weakness, you can pre-learn tricky words or model 'live' checking your spelling in a word bank or dictionary. After all, this is what we expect children to do when they are unsure.

Grammar is different. Correct grammar needs to be consistently modelled in speech as well as in writing.

That wasn't aimed at you Kate, just spoken in jest. 😊
