To think mini toiletries gift sets should be banned

After this Christmas I have three new sets to add to the several that were already languishing in my bathroom drawer. And of course each one comes with its own zip bag. None of them contain skin care products I'd actually use – I have perfume allergy for one thing, and I already have several loofahs. What do you wise MN ladies do with the things?

I quite enjoy being given toiletry sets - mini or otherwise - so I hope they aren't "banned" !

But here's the link for hygiene bank locations for you to drop off yours :-)

They are very useful if you travel frequently. Also good items to drop off to women’s aid and refuge centres.

Also useful for the gym. No need to lug full size bottles with you. We You can keep the bottles and refill them with your choice of shampoo/shower gel/whatever.

If you’ve got dc at school, you could save them to donate as raffle and tombola prizes for school fêtes.

Or the school might keep them to give through the year to children who don't have access to toiletries at home due to poverty, neglect or some other reason (such as fleeing domestic abuse, house fires, staying with relatives due to parental illness, that kind of thing). They're some of the most welcomed things.

ZenLikeAlways · 27/12/2025 12:19

I put them in my gym bag

youalright · 27/12/2025 12:22

These are perfect for travel and hospital stays

xAwaywiththefairiesx · 27/12/2025 12:26

I use them!

Slightly disappointed to have not got any this year actually 😆. I use a shower puff every day anyway as my general shower utensil of choice which I replace every so often, so it's nice to have a back up in the drawer.

The little bottles I put away ready for the next time I fly. They are the perfect travel size toiletries!

Except of course if it's soap and glory. I love soap and glory so I use them straight away if I get any.

NotSorry · 27/12/2025 12:27

Women's refuges will be delighted with toiletries

I do wonder, when reading these threads about unwanted / unsuitable gifts,

  1. How adults are getting so many gifts they get multiple of the same unwanted type.
  2. Why they are getting gifts from people who don't know them well enough to know they are allergic to/don't like the gift.

Are they corporate gifts?

They are often token gifts or obligation gifts.

Examples:

  1. I don't have a lot of money this year but I don't want to turn up at your house empty handed and seem ungrateful and rude, so I am going to spend £3.75 in Tesco on a couple of bath bombs.
  2. You are my cousin's brand new girlfriend that he is bringing to Christmas dinner at my house. Never met you but want you to feel welcome and included and not sat around awkwardly while everyone else opens gifts, so I have bought you a bath gift set from boots.

Both fair enough IMO

I hand them in when my DC's various clubs are looking for raffle prizes for the summer fete etc.

Elsvieta · 27/12/2025 12:41

Look up the Beauty Banks charity.

I had no idea there were "food banks" for this type of item. Thank you for enlightening me!

Food banks always need toiletries, sanitary items and pet food.

DoAWheelie · 27/12/2025 12:42

I give them to my mother - she goes on about 8 holidays a year and loves tiny cosmetics she can easily take on a plane.

toomanydicksonthedancefloor1 · 27/12/2025 12:43

If you genuinely wouldn't use them leave them in the packaging and re-gift. Personally I really like them so there must be other people grateful to receive them. Our primary school has a summer fayre and Christmas fayre so if I don't like them I would probably donate for raffle prizes. Body washes and shower gels and bath foam would always be used or saved for holiday toiletries if they are small. I dont routinely use body moisturiser but if it smells nice and I receive them I would use it periodically. But if you have allergies then that's different and I would have thought the people close to you who buy presents might be more thoughtful of that, or maybe they don't know?

BashfulClam · 27/12/2025 13:01

I like them. I take them on hotel trips or holiday as I don’t always like the stuff hotels give you or my husband showered and uses up all the shampoo in the small bottles…

MaleficentQueen · 27/12/2025 13:15

Oooooooh I LOVE a toiletry set. I actively encourage people to get them for me! 😂 It means that I don’t have to buy any shower gel for a couple of months!

It must be very frustrating through if you have an allergy and you have made it clear to people. It’s very ignorant for them to ignore that, so I do sympathise there.

MaleficentQueen · 27/12/2025 13:16

You could donate them to hygiene banks, they’re always after products ☺️

pouletvous · 27/12/2025 13:16

Tell the peoPle who buy these that you would prefer a full sized body wash from L’occitane or a brand you like

My MIL bought me a big gift bag full of Dove toiletries that I'm allergic to 🤷‍♀️ so no, not always corporate.

Have you actually told her?
If yes then hand them back saying clearly "I am allergic to these. I CANNOT use them. I have told you that".
Some might say that's rude but ignoring allergies is just plain selfish.

Greyrock2828 · 27/12/2025 16:08

Ha I specifically asked for them this year, I travel every week/every 2 weeks for work so it's really handy.

GU24Mum · 27/12/2025 16:20

I’m running the tombola at our village fete in the summer and I’m about to ask around for people like you to donate unwanted gift sets as they’ll bump up the number of things on the stall.

They know I have allergies but doubt they remember what to, it's not a life and death situation. My eyes sometimes swell up and it aggravates my eczema. She's not very well atm and I wouldn't want to upset her so just smiled and said thank you. I'll just give them away.
