Do you really need to visit shops on Boxing Day?

Before you decide to go to half the stores which are open today, think - do you actually need anything? If not, stay away from them.

Those supermarkets that are open would have very few deliveries. Perhaps milk n bread as majority of these are delivered by the bakery and dairy. It depends on if they worked yesterday. As some distribution centres were closed yesterday.

I personally believe that people only shop because the shops are open. If some were open yesterday, they would have gone in.

A good number of the retail workers today are people who don’t have a car who usually bus it in. But no buses means either get someone to drive them in or get taxi/uber which are 1.5-2 times more expensive.

So if you can survive a day of visiting about half the stores which are open today, stay at home or go to others’ homes.

But if we stay away they are less likely to open next year.

Nope they will open, it would take basically nobody going for a few yeyfir them to think about not opening.

Why wouldn't they?

And it's not just about the sjo, is it, the suppliers and dated stock, employees pay etc would all be affected if they closed on boxing Day as well.

I'm sure you're wealthy but some people can't afford to miss a days pay, especially at BH rates it's a nice bonus..

My dh works in distribution for a well known supermarket. He was in work at 5am to keep the cogs turning. Surely we don't need more food. Could we not just buy enough for 2 days...

Surely he knew that when he took the job?

I left retail because I didn't want to work evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Now I get 2 weeks off at Christmas which is much better.

EvilNextDoor · 26/12/2025 09:16

Whilst I won’t personally be frequenting any shops today I have zero issues if someone wants to..

I may take the dogs for a walk around town (probably not) but i literally need nothing, however if I did need something then I would of course go and get it 🤷‍♀️

I have no desire to spend any money today and if I did I certainly wouldn’t look at my local town

I may do some online browsing…

Can people really not think of anything better to do than go shopping?

I have been away and have no fresh food in the house. What is so wrong with going shopping today?

Lovely that you are going nowhere near the shops. Plenty of people will be and it is their choice.

Exactly. Can I think of things I would rather be doing than going to the supermarket? - sure.

But I need food stuff, so I will go. Bit silly to pretend people are going food shopping purely because they think its exciting and fun lol

I sell shoes so definitely not something anyone needs on Boxing Day! Also to those saying I chose this as I chose to work retail, when I started working in this shop 25 years ago we didn't even open Sundays!

Justlostmybagel · 26/12/2025 09:18

I need a Greggs steak bake and baby wipes though...

People might need shoes. I could do with a new pair. When I chose to work retail, there was also no Sunday opening but I left because those hours did not suit me anymore. You can leave too!

So why didn’t you leave when they started opening Sundays? You had the agency to leave and decided not to. So yes you did pick that as otherwise you’d have left by now. Don’t complain now because you couldn’t be arsed to leave

But you’ve presumably had ample time to leave

My DD works at an animal boarding place and her DH works at an airport. Do people really need to go away over Christmas, can they not just stay at home?
My nephew works at a pub, do people really need to go out for Christmas dinner, can they not just eat at home? Do people really need to go to pantos on Boxing day?
Why are those working in the retail trade more worthy of being with their loved ones on over Christmas than others?

ThatCyanCat · 26/12/2025 09:22

What other things do I need to ask your sister's permission for before I do them?

🤣😂😝

I know right?

Redhairandhottubs · 26/12/2025 09:23

I don’t think shops should open Boxing Day. But if they do, why should people not visit them if they want to? I worked in retail on Boxing Day when I was a teen and it made the day drag when it was quiet, so its not necessarily better for staff if people stay away!

23doorsdown · 26/12/2025 09:24

This again.

When I was a dc we always went to the big movie that opened on Boxing Day. As I got older I loved hitting the sales on Oxford st with my friends.

I even worked Boxing Day myself sometimes, I survived!

TidyCyan · 26/12/2025 09:24

I want a few things in the Boots sale. If I don't go in an hour (when they have decided to open!) they'll be gone. If they opened at 10am on the 27th I'd go then instead.

HungreeHipp0 · 26/12/2025 09:25

I'm about to start an all day shift. Luckily the buses are running but only every 2 hours so coming in was fine but DH and DC are picking me up. Shopping centre was already looking quite busy when I came in. Hoping its steady enough to make the day go quick. Although the place is mess after being shopped xmas eve so there's plenty to do.

What i find infuriating is my employer dismisses Boxing Day as being 'dead', but instead of being closed, they just put 3 members of staff in, which in reality isn't enough for the footfall we will actually get though. Also, no extra pay.

23doorsdown · 26/12/2025 09:25

I worked in retail as a teen, we opened Sundays…

notdoingit11 · 26/12/2025 09:26

As someone who works in retail (clothes shop) I do think they should be closed today (Boxing Day). My only day off over the holidays is Xmas day, I was in Xmas eve and will be in New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day

Shodan · 26/12/2025 09:27

I wouldn't normally go but today I must, to get more cat litter.

I don't see it as a big deal tbh- I've worked in retail and catering, my DP is a police officer, one of my brothers was in the ambulance service, and in 2 years' time I may well be working Christmas/Boxing Day myself (police).

Yes, it was nice when I was young and shops were closed on Boxing Day. They were also closed on a Wednesday afternoon and Sundays. There was no online shopping either. So unless you have never shopped online or on a Sunday or a Wednesday afternoon, it's a bit hypocritical to demand that other people don't shop on a day of your choosing.

The world has moved on.

So why didn't you leave and find another job that did not involve working Sundays if you hated it so much?

Your life is your responsibility, not shoppers on the hight street.

xSideshowAuntSallyXx · 26/12/2025 09:27

If there are newspapers there will be shops open. No one says "poor printers and journalists working on Christmas Day" but everyone goes on about retail staff working Boxing Day. There will be delivery drivers working today to deliver stuff to stores ready for when people go out tomorrow. No one says poor delivery drivers working over Christmas either.

saveforthat · 26/12/2025 08:35

It's not going to happen though. Remember when shops didn't open on Sundays? Everyone managed. I quite liked Sundays when nothing was open.

It’s like that in Germany - all shops closed on Sundays. I love they have quiet time on Sundays too where you can’t mow your lawn or do noisy works at certain times.

  1. Buses ARE running depending on where you live, they are where I am
  2. Retail workers (and bus drivers) get paid more today so I know several people who WANTED to work it and actively volunteered because they could do with the extra money - don’t assume all workers are there against their will

DD is working today and is not being paid any extra for doing so.
