To finally let go of my Duolingo Streak?

mumofoneAloneandwell · 25/12/2025 22:05

Its 1460 days - but all i seem to do is use streak freezes or do easy lessons rather than further my actual learning

Time to let go and find something else?

Yabu - keep it, and work harder
Yanbu - let it go, youve clearly over it

Dropped a 5 year+ streak during the last year...

Final straw was the move to the new system of losing points (or whatever it was) when you made a mistake, but the biggest factor was the realisation that I wasn't really learning anything, the value of the app was just becoming less and less unless you subscribed, which I wasn't going to do. I don't miss it.

ShodAndShadySenators · 26/12/2025 09:26

But they changed the lesson style, so you have to follow their timeline rather than doing things your own way, which was, for me, the nail in the coffin

It was the same for me. Had a streak of over 1400 and they changed the learning style once again and I just couldn't hack it any more. I needed the constant revision of earlier lessons as refreshers, as I would start to forget stuff after a while when I didn't. Such a shame as I was doing reasonably well on the original version and was keen and happy to do the lessons - I even did them on holiday for an hour, that level of happy - but I don't learn easily and don't have a knack for languages.

So, nail in the coffin. And I haven't found anything to replace it, except for my online once a week class, which isn't all year round. I was only on the free Duolingo version though.

I’m glad I found this thread - I have an 832 day streak, but with switching between Italian, music and chess!

I don’t feel I’ve made much progress in Italian, but I have learnt to play chess at a very basic level (from zero knowledge at all!).

Maybe until the end of the year?!

Sunshineo · 26/12/2025 09:28

Same with anything, if you are getting nothing from it and aren’t enjoying it then why continue?

I feel like I’m learning daily and like that it’s snippets.
I did have a break (while on holiday and trying to use the language that I had been learning) so my ‘streak’ isn’t long but I don’t pay attention to the numbers, I use it to learn a language rather than to score.

Are you all subscribers or freebies ?

I pay but only because my kids and parents like it-Duolingo family is good value for six

HornyHornersPinkyWinky · 26/12/2025 09:30

I gave up on Duolingo a while ago, I now use LingoDeer which you pay for but I’ve found it much better in terms of learning grammar etc.

EmpressaurusKitty · 26/12/2025 09:35

I did Italian on Duolingo for a while along with listening to the Coffee Break podcasts but what made the biggest difference was joining a real life class. I know that’s often not an option though.

When you drop Duolingo make sure you cancel ALL notifications as well as deleting the app or it will suck you back in.

User456778976546 · 26/12/2025 12:00

Let it go. Mine was over 750, in which time I completed all the Danish lessons and still don’t really know Danish. It was okay for a while and then became really tedious. I switched off notifications and have not regretted it.

ArtTheClownIsNotAMime · 26/12/2025 12:01

It's close to worthless for learning a language so its only purpose is fun or making you feel like you've learned something. If you're not having fun and have realised you aren't learning, let it go!

themerchentofvenus · 26/12/2025 12:03

mumofoneAloneandwell · 25/12/2025 22:09

Literally on the days where ive done a lesson, its been ONE lesson. I even scroll back to level one and done the basic phrases 😅😅

Who cares?? If you don't want to learn a language then don't!

I love duolingo. I don't pay much attention to the streak or what league I'm in. I just enjoy learning languages.

StCuntyMcCunterson · 26/12/2025 12:03

Noooo never. It’s two minutes. I will never let mine die!!!! (Ask me again when I’m at 1460 days)

Contycont · 26/12/2025 12:05

I'd use Duolingo if I could turn off the stroppy, bordering emotionally abusive comments from the owl et al.

InterestedDad37 · 26/12/2025 12:10

The number has become more important than any actual learning. Just let it go.

catontheironingboard · 26/12/2025 12:11

I’m using it to revive my A-level French and it’s really working well - I’ve markedly improved my proficiency. But I find to get proper improvements you need to do at least 3/4 lessons in each go (enough to get the daily quest points), rather than just doing one to keep the streak.

It only takes me about 2 min per lesson, though, so taking around 10 mins per day to do it is not a problem for me. I enjoy the feeling of doing something just for myself each day, rather than always just doing things for other people (DD and DP!)

I’m not sure how well it would work to learn a language from scratch, rather than using it to keep up a language you already have a good backbone with. It’s not so good at teaching the systematic structures and grammar that you need to have in place to make substantial progress with a new language. But it works very well as daily practice in everyday language use.

SophieJo · 26/12/2025 12:12

I’d let it go.
I was learning German and progressing really well I thought until something changed and the lessons were never the same again so I reluctantly uninstalled the app.

ScienceDragon · 26/12/2025 12:45

I'm just over 2000 days. I feel it keeps me motivated. But I am also watching tv shows with the same language, reading bilingual books, practicing writing the characters (it is a south-east asian language) to make it all a more rounded learning experience. I am also subscribed to a number of Youtube creators, who offer lots of shorts focusing on a particular word or phrase in the language. Ideally, language learning should never be confined to one method.

RenoDakota · 26/12/2025 09:19

I still enjoy it, but 'only' have a 390 day streak. Finished German and am doing Spanish now but flip back to easier (to me) German refreshers to keep getting triple XP for the following day. Much easier to get a 'perfect' lesson in German.
But that "woohoo, you're ready for hard mode now" drives me absolutely around the bend.

There are better apps for German that are totally free. Have a look at DW Learn German (app or website) and www.vhs-lernportal.de.

KarmenPQZ · 26/12/2025 12:52

It’s got to be the most toxic app I’ve ever installed. Let it go and be free! You’ll be happier and better off for it

mumofoneAloneandwell · 29/12/2025 14:21

I tried out chess, just for the fun of it!!!

I am free!

Thanks everyone - hard agree that it has to be fun and engaging, not a chore that you do miserably!
