To ask people with experience if this is eczema?

DD has had slightly dry skin on her inner thighs, but she came to me this evening saying her skin was really sore. It looked really sore and the only thing I have that isn’t fragranced is sudocrem, which I’ve applied.

Is this eczema? It looked more red before I applied the cream, but this shows the rough texture and bumpiness. There’s no pharmacy near us that’s open, so I’d be really grateful for advice.

It looks like dry skin rather than eczema. Is she otherwise well?

SparklingCrow · 25/12/2025 19:04

It’s so hard to tell from that photo, OP, tbh.

It looks like hives to me

Yes, she is well. No other symptoms.

I will try and take another photo now that the cream has absorbed.

My daughter was an eczema suffer as a child and it often started like this. I’d hesitate to make an actual diagnosis but if it’s itchy then it could be. Eczema often came up in this area for her if she got too warm and clammy (too many layers, sitting next to a radiator etc). Whatever it is, the sudocrem will help sooth the area until you get it checked. Has she been exposed to anything that could trigger an allergy? (Wool, new bubble bath etc). Keeping the area cool will also help it settle down. I hope it gets better really soon 🤞

It's probably contact dermatitis. Could be something like new clothes.

SonOfJames · 25/12/2025 19:09

Hopefully this shows it more clearly now that the cream has absorbed.

Still has a slight layer of sudocrem, so was redder and angrier to begin with.

Better lighting…

How long has she had it?

SonOfJames · 25/12/2025 19:19

Well, she said it was sore about a week ago. It just looked a bit dry so I moisturised it, and she never mentioned it again, so I assumed all was fine. Then she came to me today in pain. So a week or so…

Looks like an irritation rather than eczema from that photo. Eczema is usually more “blotchy” and “scaley” looking. Sudocrem is probably the best to use on it however.

Lennonjingles · 25/12/2025 19:23

My DS has has eczema since 1 year old, his flare ups are more spotty red raw like spots, do you have any piriton in case it’s allergies.

Ihatelittlefriendsusan · 25/12/2025 19:28

Eczema can present in some very different ways.

Unfortunately the pictures aren't clear enough but it could be. It could also be heat rash. I would give her an antihistamine, keep the area cool and see how it goes.

My dd is under a specialist pediatric unit for extreme eczema and is on therapeutic chemo which should give you an idea of how bad hers is. I am pretty well versed in it so if you wanna chat I can try and help.

JaniceBattersby · 25/12/2025 19:39

It possibly looks like something’s irritated her legs (maybe damp trousers or some new washing powder or something) and it’s got slightly infected. I’d give her piriton. It greatly helps my eczema. Sudocrem makes mine much worse.

SonOfJames · 25/12/2025 19:39

I’ve just given her some antihistamine. Hopefully helps! 🙏🏼

I’d try vasoline over sudocrem as an emergency solution, for my eczema it helps to get my barrier back intact if I don’t have hydrocortisone to hand.

SonOfJames · 25/12/2025 20:16

Oh, I have vasoline… I’ll a try that!

It’s hard to tell from the pictures what’s caused it.
If you’ve got oats in the house wrap some in a tea towel, muslin or odd sock and soak in her bath to soothe the itch. You can add a little coconut oil to the bath too if you have it.

SonOfJames · 25/12/2025 20:20

She’s actually saying that it’s not itchy. She says it nips though.

OP posts:
SonOfJames · 25/12/2025 20:21

Not sure if that helps narrow down the cause??
