One (average sized) tray of roast potatoes for eight people

Rach247 · 25/12/2025 12:05

…including four large and permanently-hungry men. Just seen it being prepared at my in-laws. No other potatoes, boiled carrots and broccoli are the only other sides.

AIBU to be disappointed (and preemptively hungry)?

Ugh. My 6yo would eat that on her own. She is mad about roast potatoes. I’ve got 2kg for four of us and doubt we will have many leftover!

2025Hackathon · 25/12/2025 12:09

Can you root around for more or say something? Are they planning to offer Yorkshire Puddings as well?

Flurt · 25/12/2025 12:11

5kg for five here - no chance of low roasties here and there should be plenty for leftovers tomorrow. We love them. Next year you look after the roasties wherever you are!

DahlsChickenz · 25/12/2025 12:14

YANBU. My in laws are like this. My MIL has the appetite of a bird and just doesn't have a good sense of how much an average adult might eat. She once served me a plate of pasta comprised of four tortellini (and not the big ones - just the normal size!). She made one of those supermarket packs for 2 feed 3 adults and a toddler.

I love her dearly so I just accept it as her foible and bring secret snacks. I've had many a Christmas dinner comprised of two small roast potatoes, a tablespoon of peas, a couple of carrot batons and a wafer thin slice of nut roast.

CalzoneOnLegs · 25/12/2025 12:17

That’s not enough at all, and besides it’s potatoes, they’re not expensive, and I’ve found they are great twice cooked the next day if you have made too many. You will have to fill up on the delicious and varied cheeseboard they have no doubt not provided

CalzoneOnLegs · 25/12/2025 12:18

@Flurt now that’s more like it 🥔🥔❤️

JudgeBread · 25/12/2025 12:19

I was wondering if my two big trays were enough for six lmao

That's a disappointing potato to person ratio

Don't act like such a glutton. That 6 pack of Dairylea triangles will be enough to last a large family until Easter!

I could eat all of those by myself OP.

A good roast potato is the food of the gods.

Are they good roasties or are they those cut-too-small and slightly underdone soft ones?

gingercat02 · 25/12/2025 12:34

One biggish potato per person here, carrots parsnips, red cabbage, cauliflower cheese, turkey , ham, bread sauce, cranberry sauce, gravy.
We are starter people, mussels and bread, and pavlova or and black forrest pudding and custard.
No one leaves hungry 😋

MeridaBrave · 25/12/2025 12:35

i’d probably say something, eg are you sure that’s enough, can I help you quickly prep some more?

Throughahedgebackwards · 25/12/2025 12:35

I was tasked with peeling the potatoes at my in-laws yesterday. Took one look at how many they had and went out and bought the same again. Still not sure there's enough.

Sounds like they are ready to cook roast potatoes so I’d guess that’s not an option. And roast spuds are the best bit of Christmas lunch (apart from pigs in blankets) 😱

summervile · 25/12/2025 12:40

Fucking he’ll. Surely 8 people = minimum of 32 roasties.

What about for dipping in gravy when you’re pissed at 11pm?

WinchSparkle80 · 25/12/2025 12:45

We have 5kg for 6 but we are definitely over catering as always 🤣🤣🤣

MySilentLions · 25/12/2025 12:47

I’ll pray for you OP!! Roasties are one of the best bits of Xmas dinner, well any dinner really.

id be checking if there was a corner shop open nearby and nipping out for 3 bagfuls of Auntie Bessie finest and getting them on!

Roasties go into a different stomach though

Haha. So if an adult gets four presumably the toddler gets half a one? 🤣

I don't get people like this. I'm a small eater but would never dream of serving stingey portions to guests. Unless they were unexpected and I had financial problems.

Zanatdy · 25/12/2025 12:52

My mum never cooks enough roast potatoes. Last year I was staying in a rental nearby and took some as I said we needed to use them up! She only has 2 max but my kids like 4/5 min, plus 3-4 yorkshires

Sadly, they look like good ones. It will make it even harder to have only one.

They are lovely and generous people, just with a huge blind spot about food portions. And my husband has inherited it.

Goldeh · 25/12/2025 12:54

Oh god, I'm catering for eight and I've only done one tray Confused

In my defence, they're homemade ones and they're big, chunky things. I've got a load of sides as well, including two trays of Yorkshire puddings (aka, all middle DC will eat from the dinner), mashed potato, buttered turnip, sprouts, parsnips, carrots, broccoli, peas, and then three desserts to choose from (or not choose from).

arethereanyleftatall · 25/12/2025 12:56

Oh that’s such a shame op. Are they the kind that say ‘it’s just a roast.’ I’ve been cooking and prepping ours for 4 days and I’m so excited. Home made everything. Spiced red cabbage, home made shortbreads, plenty of roasties, home made stuffing. It’s gonna be lush and so special cos it’s the only time of the year I have this much time.

Oh this absolutely made my day, that’s so funny, sorry, just the way you wrote it, bloody brilliant! 😂

FestiveBauble · 25/12/2025 13:15

I’m sorry, one potato per person?! I’d cry 😂

OP, you are clearly not being unreasonable. I found with some of my relatives as they got a bit older and their appetite decreased they couldn’t understand portion sizes. God bless my Grandma who used to cook similar for 12, about 2kg of potatoes and a small chicken. They thought they’d pushed the boat out 😂
