Christmas gift dilemma

spaghettisocks · 25/12/2025 10:55

DH has bought me (another) Kindle for Christmas along with other nice gifts. It’s just it’s the third one he’s bought me now and there’s nothing wrong with the other two! I wouldn’t mind if it was a colour one so at least an upgrade but it’s just a slightly newer model in a different colour.
He has form for this having bought me an expensive bracelet in the summer that he had bought me a few years ago. Literally exactly the same bracelet!
Advice on what to do with the Kindle. He’s really pleased with himself thinking it’s a great present…

Take it back and buy yourself something you want with the £ it cost.

Potatoelephant · 25/12/2025 10:57

Does he realise you have two kindles already? And thinks this is a brilliant upgrade? Or has he forgotten you already have two?

WaaWaaPedal · 25/12/2025 10:58

Gift one or two of the older ones to friends/family/charity. Next time your birthday/Christmas is coming up, gently try and get into the conversation in advance that you don't need another Kindle.

I actually (not at all gently) did that this year as I thought he might be thinking about it…
It went a bit like “oh Kindle’s on offer there’s nothing different to the one I’ve got, can’t believe people pay all that money to ‘upgrade’ when there’s nothing different and the old one works fine”
Obviously too gentle still though!

Definitely knows I have 2 as I read every evening on the newest one and about 2 weeks ago DS hid one and I had to dig out the old one for an evening until found the hiding place the next day

I would love to but not sure how to without hurting his feelings

It's just so thoughtless isn't it? And a waste of money.

I've had my kindle for 15 years, still going strong, can't see any point "upgrading" it until it stops working.

InfoSecInTheCity · 25/12/2025 11:18

Return it to Amazon, get it credited to your Amazon account and use the funds to buy books for the kindles you have.

CarefullyCuratedFurniture · 25/12/2025 11:18

Well if it hurts his feelings, perhaps that will give him the impetus to do better next time.

The men I know would take that to be a hint that you wanted one. Don't ask me why.

hellowhaaat3632 · 25/12/2025 11:27

Ask for a gift receipt and get something you like

He obviously thought you wanted the upgrade 😆

If he’s anything like my DH, he’s heard “Kindle’s on offer…” and latched on to that, thinking you were hinting that you wanted one!

HelpMySocksAreTouchingMe · 25/12/2025 11:46

That’s frustrating, I think I would be honest and explain that you would rather credit it and buy books.

He's quite happily hurt your feelings with his thoughtlessness.

Hurt his bloody feelings, maybe the message will sink in!

Peridot1 · 25/12/2025 11:48

You sleep with him, married him and have children with him and can’t tell him coming up to Christmas that you don’t need another Kindle? Even though you suspected he might get one? And now are afraid to hurt his feelings?

This. Strangely, if you say something like 'I've seen a beautiful pair of earrings that I'd love you to give me for Christmas' it doesn't work.

DahlsChickenz · 25/12/2025 12:18

Just be straightforward. 'I already have two kindles which work fine. I won't use this. Do you have the receipt so I can return it and get something I will use? Next year I will give you some suggestions in November so that you can pick from a shortlist.'

If he sulks about that just stare at him in blank amazement and say 'But surely you can understand why a person wouldn't need three kindles?' and repeat until the penny drops in his very tiny brain.

ScorchingEgg · 25/12/2025 14:24

Definitely return it for credits to buy books.

This just baffles me… how can you live and be married to someone, yet you’re not able to have an open discussion with him as to why he thought you would possibly need yet another kindle?

You only need to hurt them once.

Also he may have understood your comment to mean you wanted one

CrostaDiPizza · 25/12/2025 14:38

spaghettisocks · 25/12/2025 11:12

But it's ok for him to hurt yours?

themerchentofvenus · 25/12/2025 14:41

I'd be blunt.

"I already have two kindlea that you bought be so not sure why you're buying me a third one unless it's a hint you'd like one of my other ones?"

Howardyoudo · 25/12/2025 14:41

How silly of you? Why wouldn’t you say you have 2 already??
can’t imagine how people actually manage to have a relationship if they are like op.

Rhaidimiddim · 25/12/2025 14:45

Point out to him.that you have two already. Push the problem back onto him. And ask him why does he fo this.
