AIBU to think that after 40 minutes’ rest the Turkey will be cold?

Not really AIBU, but a plea for advice. Even covered loosely in foil, won’t it get cold? Any advice? I don’t want it to keep cooking in a warming oven, but I’ve no idea how to navigate this.

My turkey is in now because I dont have the oven space! Figured gravey will save us all

GoodVibesHere · 25/12/2025 08:39

I think it'll be fine? We leave ours to rest for that amount of time. If the gravy is hot it'll be great.

YaWeeFurryBastard · 25/12/2025 08:40

No it won’t unless it’s really small. Put tea towels over the foil to help retain the heat. We often leave ours resting for 2h+ and it’s still warm although we do have a big one.

Satisfiedkitty · 25/12/2025 08:40

It's fine - cover in double tin foil, and then a tea towel. It actually needs to rest and the gravy will heat it up anyway.

blankcanvas3 · 25/12/2025 08:40

Cover tightly in foil and the gravy will warm it back up anyway. My turkey rests for a couple of hours and is always still warm and you can’t tell anyway when the gravy is on it x

IndieRocknRoll · 25/12/2025 08:40

They stay warm for ages under foil. It will be fine once you’ve put gravy on it.

Nosejobnelly · 25/12/2025 08:41

Put clean tea towels or a regular towel over the foil to keep the heat in.

Baker111 · 25/12/2025 08:41

It will be fine. Cover in foil and then an old towel. It retains the heat for a surprisingly long time.

limetrees32 · 25/12/2025 08:41

I think it will still be hot. But it confuses me because I am think it will carry on cooking.

ruthieness · 25/12/2025 08:41

Obviously depends on your turkey size but ours stays hot in a warm kitchen for hours! You can pop a clean towel over it to insulate it if you are worried!

Enko · 25/12/2025 08:43

Pop foil and. A couple of towels over it and it will be a good temperature to eat.

TheDandyLion · 25/12/2025 08:43

Cover with tin foil and then a couple of tea towels. It won't stop cooking for another 20-30 minutes, then it'll start to cool down. A sizable turkey would stay hot for about 2-3 hours. If you start carving it'll cool down much quicker so leave it in one piece.

KnickerlessFlannel · 25/12/2025 08:43

For next year, keep an amazon (other boxes are available) box, and stuff with towels. We have the turkey box on top of the freezer all year!

It’s not very big as only really DH and I for Turkey this year. The kids will have their obligatory sliver and whinge about it! Other guests are veggie.

I promise it will keep the heat and be all the better for ‘resting’. Tin foil and towels/tea towels as everyone says is the way to go. Have a lovely day ☺️

Lindy2 · 25/12/2025 08:54

My turkey is in the oven now. When it's cooked I take it out cover in foil and 2 tea towels whilst everything else goes in the oven to cook.

An hour later my turkey has always been very hot and ready to serve up.

I do this every year.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 25/12/2025 08:56

As others have said, cover in foil and then a thick towel. It will be great.

Macaroni46 · 25/12/2025 09:00

wrap it tightly in foil, twice. Then cover with tea towels and towels. I do this and it stays hot for over an hour.
Spoon gravy over it before you cover it to keep it moist.

Why when Op has had some perfectly helpful answers?

Keepoffmyartichokes · 25/12/2025 09:01

We always cook it early then a double layer of foil and 2 tea towels and it stays warm and can rest for a couple of hours if needed. It shouldn't be carved quickly, resting it keeps the juices in and it stays moist. FIL is a retired chef and it was his advice to do that, it works well

suburburban · 25/12/2025 09:02

I was told y a reliable source the best way is to leave it for an hour so I’m going to try this today

Pipersouth · 25/12/2025 09:03

Mary Berry (says in the Radio Times) takes hers to her daughters house wrapped in foil/tea towels and in a sleeping bad zipped up apparently is fine 3-4 hrs!!

Coffeeishot · 25/12/2025 09:03

Dh is that you i swear we have just had this conversation and I said it will be fiiiine 😀 honestly op it will be fine and even if it does cool a bit gravy will heat it up.
